I think it is also awkward for some people because they want to compliment you on your weight loss, but are unsure of how to say it without sounding like they're insulting how you looked before. Usually, I just accept that they've noticed and take it as a compliment, try not to over think it.

Size 14 skinny jeans! HOLLLAAA. Okay only some brands, but still! Actually, being able to a ZIP size 12! Didn't eat ANY of the pizza that my sister brought home that sat there on the counter during the night, then leftovers this morning. DIDN'T eat any. And I used to work there, and love it. So that's huge! :)

I think it was more so to save him from infection/loss of blood that would kill him, which in turn would turn him. It's easier to heal an amputated leg than a leg that has a huge chunk of muscle, tendons and skin bitten out of it. If he dies still, he would turn regardless.
