The night before I usually have pasta or some stir fry with rice. I normally eat brown rice, but if it's the night before a race, I go with white rice. If I were jonesing for a piece of pie, I'd probably treat myself to the pie after the race.

I got bad chafing from mine until I found the perfect sports bra that works well with it. I went out and got two more of them and no longer have problems on my long runs like I used to. I mainly like to use mine so I can (1) get the calorie count and (2) see if my perceived effort matches my HR and how quickly I recover.…

It's funny that you mention that music may have helped. For training, music is vital for me - I don't think I'd make it through training runs without it! But, during races (especially marathons), I still use music, yet I almost tune it out. I'd probably do better if I could tune out all the thoughts running through my head…

Look at you! So versatile! I wouldn't normally expect the same athlete to excel at 50k and 5k - I'm so impressed! As for me, I don't care how much training I do, I don't think I'm ever going to win any races - but I'm fine with that. Getting a PR here and there is nice, but even that is never really a goal of mine. Mostly,…

Ahhhh... the marathon. It was your first and you finished and that's what matters! You should be super proud of yourself. It's interesting - for me I feel like a 10k, effort wise, is about 65% as hard as a half marathon, even though a half marathon is more than twice as far distance-wise. Now a marathon? For me a marathon…

Personally I feel a little lost if I don't have any upcoming events scheduled. I'm a bit too Type A for my own good and I do better when I have concrete goals, training plans to follow, etc.

I just did a two marathons three weeks apart. My time on the second marathon was actually slightly better (only by about a minute), but it sure didn't feel better while I was doing it; I wanted to stop starting at around mile 11. I'm finding recovery to be a lot harder too. Given the cutoff time of 5 hours and your…

I think the half marathon is a great distance. It's long enough to be a challenge (I'm more intrigued by distance rather than speed), but not so long that it takes over your life like a marathon can.

That's terrible! What if you hadn't had your phone?! I hope you've said something to the race organizers.

If you don't have it already, your first book purchase should be "Relentless Forward Progress: A Guide to Running Ultramarathons" by Bryon Powell. He's got training plans in there and advice for pretty much every aspect of ultra distance running. I'm currently 3/4 of the way through Scott Jurek's book "Eat and Run: My…

Wow! Go you!! I must say I'm not surprised and could've predicted this was the route you were going to go :-). I'm thinking of registering for a 50k trail run in June, so I'm all ears for tips too. I've got Big Sur in April so I'll be upping the hill running before that anyway. I've got some trail shoes on my holiday…

Anyone else feel like they're going to be a lot more self conscious when crossing finish lines after looking through these? Very cool photo project idea.

I agree with Waffle too. What really helped my half time was starting my training for a marathon. My weekly mileage increased quite a bit and I had accomplished some longer runs. When my training plan called for a 13-mile run during a "step back" week, I ran a half marathon in Santa Cruz and surprised myself with a PR much…

Agreed! I couldn't keep up with them for ten yards... to think of that pace for 26.2 MILES is crazy.
-
Sounds fun :-). I'd probably pace myself horribly in a mile race and slow to a crawl 1/4 into it!

This is a good article that came out about this: http://www.runnersworld.com/general-interest/why-a-sub-200-marathon-wont-happen-soon

If Bikram is what you enjoy, then stick with it and drink lots of water. Your body is already used to it so you should be fine. I personally really like a good vinyasa flow class. I also try to keep a lookout for special workshops that my studio offers (like hip opening workshops, things like that). If you experiment with…

Just joined - neat website - http://athlinks.com/racer/159796900 Still trying to find my way around though!

I regularly do form checks on my long runs - I go through a mental checklist every mile or so. I do notice that when I get tired, my form suffers. Poor form means I'm running less efficiently. Less efficient running will just make me MORE tired - vicious cycle! So, I do what I can to keep my form in check.

This weekend, all I've got is an 8 mile taper training run. On 10/20, I've got the Humboldt Redwoods Marathon. It runs along the "Avenue of the Giants" - I'm so excited to run under a canopy of gigantic redwoods - http://www.redwoodsmarathon.org/course/. I probably won't know my bib# until the morning of. If I can finish…

I'm part way through; its the book I'm currently reading. It's fitting for me because I'm toying with the idea of trying something longer than a marathon and I'm also vegan, so it's interesting to read about that aspect as well.
-
Exactly what I was thinking. I'm 5'2" (if I round up) and I lost 30 lbs and hardly anyone noticed. Don't get discouraged if they don't notice; you're not doing this for other people, you're doing this for yourself!

My favorite has already been mentioned - "You have great stamina. Call me." This was held by a young, attractive blond woman - and being in Santa Cruz, CA, that sign could have been directed at men, women, or both! This last weekend I also saw a new one - "Press here for more horsepower" and he'd drawn a button on his sign…

So funny and very true!

I would be irritated if that was what I was used to - but I'm with most everyone else. Most road races have plenty of aid stations; I typically do not carry any water for a road race. I like to carry as little as possible.
-
That's a great time for your first half!! I also think the half marathon is a great distance - long enough to be a significant challenge, but not so long that training takes over your life!

I do most of my running starting around 4:30 in the morning. I think I only have one neighbor that knows I'm a runner and that's because we've talked about it. There's another guy that is always out running when I'm walking my dog; I always feel like telling him "I'm a runner, too!" but I'm sure he just sees me as the lady…

Feel free to add me if you'd like. I'm vegan... but my diary isn't open. I am always happy to share recipes and tips, though.

I just went on my first post-marathon run this morning and that heavy, fatigued leg feeling that lingered for about three weeks after my first marathon wasn't there this time around. I'd like to think that some of it is better conditioning and an improved mental attitude on my part (26.2 just doesn't seem as far/daunting…

Congrats for signing up - that's always one of the hardest parts! I'm considering an ultra too - but I'll probably start with a 50k. I just wish all the courses near me weren't so dang hilly!
