I've been using Tailwind for a while now; order directly from them if you can. They usually personalize my bag and throw in some freebies too :-). My favorite flavor is the berry, followed by mandarin. I generally need a LOT of salt when I run, so I do supplement tailwind with salt caps on really long runs (15+ miles).

Well, FWIW, a whole slew of runners do Boston to Big Sur which are two marathons less than a week apart. In fact, the overall winner of April's BSIM was a B2B participant - he ran Boston, flew out to CA and WON Big Sur and set a combined time record while he was at it. He's obviously an elite runner - but having done Big…

I enjoy the downhill part, so if it were up to me, I'd do the marathon. You're going to have to get down anyway, right?!

Wow! Love to see all of you training for your first marathon! This time last year, I was in the same boat - and during that first marathon, I told myself NEVER EVER AGAIN!!! But then, within the week after I finished that marathon, I had already signed up for a fall marathon. Then I did another three weeks after that.…

Love this thread! I started running about 2 years ago - currently training for marathon #4 & maybe a trail 50k in the nearish future too. Turning 40 this summer :-).

Interesting thread! Cadence is never something I paid much attention to... I have paid attention to my form; I do make an effort to always land mid-foot, etc. I just logged into Garmin Connect and apparently on my last run (11 miles) my average cadence was 179. I don't run particularly fast but I am rather short (I'm about…

You sound just like I did when I posted on here wondering if I should run a marathon. I ended up doing three marathons in 2013 and I'm already registered for two in 2014. Hoping to do my first ultra this year too - but just a 50k, not a 50m. So, yes, you should register for the 50m and start training for it. I think you…

Late to this post but not to the cause... I logged 11 megsmiles on Saturday. Drunk driving destroys lives - that so easily could have been me. For the vast majority of my runs, at least 3 miles of every run are on city streets.

Just over 4 hours is an awesome time for your first marathon (and much faster than in any of my three attempts). Great job! How's the recovery going?

My biggest issue is always about fuel... during training I was just fine with the 20 miler, but when it came to race day, the fueling that worked for the 20 miler didn't work for me for the full. I should have consumed more and I should have consumed sooner than I did. There is no shame in walking if you need it. Walking…

Alright - I come to you from the future. I'm married, I have a demanding job, I have two small kids, I have a parent that isn't self-sufficient and is dependent on me for A LOT - oh, how I look back to those college days! Yes, your life is just as crazy-busy in its own way, but generally you have a lot more flexibility…

From my personal experience - when I first started running, I went straight for the half marathon distance and I was very much a weekend warrior. I completed three half marathons training that way. It wasn't until I started training for a full marathon that I added in a lot of mid-week running. So, from my perspective,…

Do see someone so you don't inadvertently do more damage. My husband injured his Achilles and it manifested as calf pain (he injured the part of the tendon that attaches to the calf). Whatever it is, hope it goes away soon! I injured my IT band (during childbirth of all things!) and I was skeptical about physical therapy…

Depends... I live in Northern CA, so my opinion of "bad weather" is relative. It never gets *that* bad here. Most of the races I register for are local-ish, so the way I see it, when I encounter bad weather, I look at it as an excellent training opportunity. My main goal during races is to not be miserable, so if the…

I generally do out and backs. When I know I have a long run coming up over the weekend, I do have plenty of mind-games going on during the week in anticipation, but the more often I accomplish those long runs, the fewer mind games I experience... here is what works for me: (1) I do out and backs - for some reason, the test…

Yay!! You'll be just fine. Can't wait to hear about them.

I considered doing Tinkerbell with some friends, but honestly I'm kind of glad the timing didn't work out because YES, it was pricey!! I live in CA so I do lots of California races. I just posted on your wall about the SF Half Marathon. I also really enjoyed the Santa Cruz half marathon last year and I've signed up for…

When I injured my IT band (injured during childbirth, believe it or not!), I went to a physical therapist and the massaging he did on my IT band is what I'm convinced cured it. Yes, I did the little exercises he prescribed, but honestly I think it was the targeted massage that helped most. The massaging did hurt, but it…

I do not rotate my shoes, but I know I should. Kind of like how I don't floss every single day either...

Yeah, I always have to add additional information for that race - while I do have my sights set on longer distances, a 408k race is most definitely not in the cards!
-
I'm feeling really disorganized after reading some of your plans!! Coming up I've got... Woodside 35k (this is a trail run, it's actually at the very end of December) The San Jose 408k - March (this is an 8k race, SJ's main area code is 408) Santa Cruz Half Marathon - April Big Sur Marathon - April SF Marathon (this is a…

In September I did the Half Moon Bay Marathon and even though the course was USTFA certified, they actually had a major distance problem! Due to numerous complaints from runners, the organizers made the USTFA come back and remeasure the course and low and behold, the half marathon course was indeed too long. My Garmin…

I usually run on an empty stomach if going 8 miles or fewer. For runs of 8+ miles, I'll have something like steel cut oatmeal or a whole wheat pita w/hummus for breakfast. For a half marathon distance, I find that I do fine without eating anything during the race; for marathons, I force myself to start eating some sport…

Fantastic! Congratulations on getting in.

too late, kavery knows all about trail ultras!

1. Not normal. All the marathons I've registered for have had course maps and elevations up basically as soon as registration for the race opened. I would also find it odd that this information is missing. But, since this run is happening in Florida, elevation won't really be a concern (as states go, it's pretty flat) and…

Huh. I could see, say committing to running at least one mile every day for one year - but I don't think I'd bother going beyond that... for me, it'd just be too much laundry! As it is, when my training plans call for 2 mile runs (usually during taper, before a much longer race), I feel like it's a waste of laundry.

Running in the rain is just fine with me - just be aware of potential hazzards. For example, the recreational trail that I run on is also along one of the area waterways and there's a whole street/water/drainage system going on adjacent to the trail. Well, one dark, rainy morning, I almost ran into a giant wall of water…

I don't seem to be all that pace driven. My goals usually center around distances and my main goal right now is to complete an ultra - most likely it'll be a trail 50k and it'll be next fall (I already have the race picked out, just waiting for the organization to officially schedule it for 2014). Depending on how that…

I started running in the spring of 2012 and completed my first race (half marathon) that summer. I did 2 more half marathons that fall and then signed up for my first marathon (May, 2013). So far in 2013, I've completed 3 marathons, three "official" half marathons (one of which was on a trail) and have a 35k trail run…
