  • I bought a book titled "The Complete Idiots Guide To Pressure Cooking" for my Kindle and have put it to great use. I didn't realise it, but you can make everything from soup to cheesecake in a pressure cooker. It's a real time saver too - soups that would take hours ordinarily take 10-12 minutes. But give the book a read -…
  • I'm confused? Are you eating the phones? A sedentary lifestyle leads to weight gain. Make a plan to exercise before or after work, control your calorie intake and you'll be fine. Many of us on this forum have dayjobs that require little energy expenditure. The trick is to adjust your lifestyle to include exercise. This is…
  • I have no facts to back this up but I am certain the world would be a more relaxed place if more people had the occasional beer.
  • It's not so much the calorie content of alcohol, but how it affects your bodies ability to process lipids. You could easily counter the calories by cutting out a snack or food items such as bread, but there is not a great deal you can do to counter how it effects your metabolism. My advice? Drink what you enjoy. If you're…
  • Oddly, since joining MFP and keeping a diary I realise that I am skewed more towards a diet rich in proteins. But I cannot stand the use of the term "paleo diet". It is intellectually weak. I think people miss that like our ape relatives, humans are omnivorous. If other eating plans prior to paleo were so bad, surely we…
  • Looking at the number of people who can't be bothered to read the article, I just know that Bill Hicks is spinning in his grave. Good luck working at the Waffle Hut.
  • I do pyramid sets: 1x100 1x200 1x300 1x400 1x300 1x200 1x100 You can change intensity by decreasing or increasing recovery between sets or add variety by changing strokes or using kickboards, paddles etc.
  • Think it's par for the course for non-elite athletes to pack on a few pounds after a big endurance event. Most of us take time off from training and don't really taper our appetites. Enjoy your time off, don't stress too much about weight gain. Once you are back into training the weight gain won't last long.
  • Two athletes died during the Ironman 70.3 challenge in SA, so for a full IM you can't skimp on training. The course is flat and fast though an ocean breeze can make it a bit windy. But weather aside, the course here is quick and the atmosphere is fantastic.
  • I have switched from Polar to Garmin in the last month and am very happy with the decision. The 910xt is rechargable and doesn't need speed sensors and footpods (though you can make use of these if you want). For me, both brands are a good bet. I went for the Garmin in the end because it can be used for open water and…
  • I get exponentially slower with distance and I of of others who do too, so I wouldn't base my marathon time on my time over short distances. As others have already said, build up to doing the distance first and for your first attempt just get out there and have fun.
  • Not entirely sure of the answer but there are a growing number of endurance athletes who fuel using protein. You may have to gradually change your carb-protein ratio as you run though. I wouldn't advise making the switch over-night. I don't particularly follow a specific high-protein or traditional diet (with a ratio of…
  • You'll have to wait for 2014, but a trip to South Africa for the Comrades Marathon is worth the experience.
