  • Update - how did you go?
  • Focusing on eating slowly is good too. It is difficult to retrain yourself if you're a "bolter", but I have found that if I stop and think, I'm not even tasting food if I'm wolfing it down, which means that although I think I'm eating for pleasure, I actually miss out on the chance to really savour it.
  • I think cold turkey on sugar for a time is good - don't have to do it forever, but the more sweets you eat, the more you crave. Having a break from it can change your taste perception and defeat the cravings. I have done this and actually found I had withdrawl (jittery and headaches). After a month (the time limit I set),…
  • Small portion of it to be polite and fill up on veges Offer to cook!!! I was cooking dinner reguarly by the age of 14 - you will need to be doing it eventually, so start early.
  • Try to drink plenty of water. It helps.
  • I find that calorie counting helps me. Having to account for everything I put in my mouth.
  • Look for BioOil - fantastic for reducing the appearance of stretch marks
  • Maybe not metabolism. Thyroid, Glycemic imbalance, hormones, gluten intolerance...there are a whole bunch of medical reasons for weight to be difficult to lose and some are genetic - maybe give yourself another month and then start getting tested for alternatives. Also, consider seeing a nutritionist - it is possible that…
  • I had a similar problem. I think when you have under 10kg to lose it is harder to get it to move. After 5 weeks of graft, the scales have finally started to budge (I did lose some cm - important to measure so you have more than one way to celebrate progress). What changed? The week the weight moved was the 7 days off the…
  • ...but your food diary has no veges and a lot of fried/junk food. Calorie count is not the only thing that matters - you need some nutritional content also.
  • I have homemade muesli or porrige for breakfast almost every day. Lunches I take to work are often pasta with frozen peas, a little salmon and a spoonful of pesto stirred through. I cook most nights and use a lot of veges from our garden - often grating carrot and adding red lentils into a mince and tomato mix to use for…
  • Carbohydrates (potatoes, bread, rice). Be careful with the calorie counting though, it's easy to miss things - e.g. I only worked out this morning that I needed to record the milk I put on my cereal as well as my cereal. If you cooked something in oil and added a sauce, you need to record the oil and the sauce. Also, it is…
  • I think protein is supposed to keep you fuller for longer - sort of like the low GI idea. Keeps you on a more even keel. Well done for staying under your calorie goal. Once you've got that sussed, you may notice that you are less hungrier on higher protein days: if so, then you've got another tool to use.

  • Yeah, I struggle with this at work too - it doesn't help that everyone is always generously bringing in cookies and chocolate (etc) to share. I have found that REALLY fresh carrots make a nice sweet craving snack. Can you manage a short walk at work (to the photocopier and back) - sometimes a little "distraction" helps.…
  • It sounds like emotional eating to me. Ask yourself "am I actually hungry?" If you are, then you do probably need to eat something healthy before coming home. If not - I sympathise, it is a very hard thing to fight.
  • Did he hassle you when you were bigger? I've heard that it is quite common for girls who were "fat" together to pick on one of their group who loses the weight, so if it's only started since you have slimmed down it is most likely jealousy. Still, perhaps if he isn't showing proper appreciation for your "womanly curves",…
  • Hey, my husband is coeliac and everything I cook is gluten-free - we'll have to recipe swap sometime. I often make pancakes (crepes) to use instead of wraps. They work brilliantly if you just add one extra egg to a regular crepe recipe...and they don't snap or crumble like shop-bought gluten-free wraps. Then you can just…
  • Other posters have put it well - the amount of calories you need depend on your size and activity level and gender. A small woman may need that many calories to maintain a healthy weight. However, if your recommended calories is a lot higher, a "starvation diet" will not help. If you eat WAY too little, your metabolism…
  • Wii Fit isn't very high intensity anyway. EA Sports is probably the equivalent of doing exercises with a trainer and my favourite is "get fit with Mel B". Despite sounding daggy, it meets my girlie desire for aerobics classes (I can't afford the gym). If you're hitting the gym, you are doing great and definitely deserve…
  • If you are having feet trouble, use some swimming to get off your feet for a while without doing no exercise. Good for if you have joint (ankle, knee, hip) problems.
  • Can be the shoes you use: running and walking shoes should support the feet differently and it may be that if you want to get serious about running that you get some fitted (walk on one of those machines that lazer image the feet to tell you what kind of shoe you need). I often get instep pain if I'm wearing poorly-fitted…
  • It's funny - some people are told to let go of the scales, it's only a number. However, I need that number as a measure of whether I'm a healthy weight, as what I see in the mirror changes from day to day. The disease really screws up your body image perception. The main thing is not to reach a goal weight and be tempted…
  • Maybe you're bulking up? Muscle is heavier (higher density) than fat. Taking measurements can sometimes give a better indication of progress than the scales.
  • Have you tried any of the exercise games? Wii or Kinect? No, it won't be the same, but it might be something you could use as a reward i.e. 20 minutes of an exercise game and then you're allowed some proper gaming time
  • Hi, I am new to the site and also have this problem. I eat too fast, comfort-eat and crave sugar and salt when I'm stressed. I don't know if your food relationship issues are similar to mine, but if they are, dealing with the emotional side of eating may mean that dieting becomes less of an issue. I'm not there yet - I…
