  • I'm 62, have lost more than 50 pounds in the past three years, and have a bit more to lose, and I have bad knees and asthma, too. I hate the treadmill and standing elliptical -- they hurt my knees too much. Fortunately there are so many other things we can do! I love swimming but sometimes it seems just too much to get…
  • 1. While driving to the gym today saw shadow on my forearm. Is that a big lump? Or rather muscle definition showing itself? 2. No room in refrigerator: Vegetables and four kinds of lettuce etc. take up lots and lots of room. 3. Ecologically irresponsible: run dishwasher more often as all meals cooked from scratch, all food…
  • Rowing! It's not weight bearing and works most of the main muscle groups. Swimming is also great but this super cold winter I just couldn't make myself get in the pool. Rowing is also pretty concentrated and gives pretty fast results.
  • For knees, non-weight-bearing cardio has helped me enormously. For a long while I swam...freestyle is great, but avoid the breaststroke. Recently I discovered rowing on the concept 2 in the gym. Fabulous. I am convinced it has already, after two months of rowing 2-3 times per week, helped my knees and it is no longer…
  • Oh my! SO glad you said that, thought I was the only one. I cannot and will not gain weight, so quick if there is a higher number I redouble efforts. (I'm consistent, and keep throwing out any and all clothes that are too large, because I am not going back...)
  • 1. If you mess up and overeat, do not beat yourself up. DO get right back on track the next meal/ next day. 2. Throw away your fat clothes. If you have them you have a back up plan that you do not want. 3. Get your exercise even, especially, when you don't feel like it. You will never regret having exercised, but you will…
  • Well Ecogran that is quite a story. Your point about higher quality with lesser quantity is one I am trying to follow myself. I recently retired and although I live alone am trying to cook even when I do not have someone over...and am discovering all sorts of little salads and other things that are interesting. (Grilled…
  • Just turned 60 and have lost 53 pounds total. Doing it slowly -- a bit less than one pound per week. I am finding that if I don't exercise it is almost impossible to lose... Good luck on your journey!
  • 1. Going to restaurants is not as interesting since I cannot manage to eat an appetizer, main course, dessert, bread and wine. I get full somewhere after the appetizer. Need to make hard choices. 2. My elderly dog who follows me around the house is irritated because I carry the laundry from the basement to first floor to…
  • "You can't lose too much more weight, you will weigh less than me!" At least it is honest! This is when my BMI is 36.5
  • Spanx have their uses and are nowhere near as uncomfortable as an old-time girdle. There are a few other brands (Carol Weir for example) that do not squish your bust anywhere near as much, and I wear those too. The key is to get a size that holds you in properly but is comfortable.

  • Thanks for sharing your story today...it is inspiring for all those days and weeks when the weight does not come off and for all the times I am too tired/busy/uninspired to go for a workout. And also for the next time the muscly guys seem to own the space...
  • Fabulous! If you post more on this it would be great. I tried to do a similar thing but obviously am not as good at Excel so it doesn't come out as well. Thanks so much.
  • Sleeping on my back and on my right side -- I wake up this way sometimes. Before I could not sleep on my back at all -- it seemed I'd wake up out of breath (sleep apnea, probably?) I needed to sleep either on the left, or on my stomach. But not now -- all sorts of configurations seem possible. This is after a cumulative…
  • Hey Lumpy, congratulations to you and your Mom. Even if you don't realize how important it was, you probably encouraged your Mom to take many of those walks -- sometimes she probably needed your motivation and your company to get out there. I help my Mom to get out often including for walks at night. At first she says she…
  • One thing I noticed is that you are eating one large meal, and using up a good half of your calories there. My own experience -- and I have a long way to go but have lost 10kg/ 22 pounds so far in 3 months at age 60 -- is to space out the calories much more evenly. Also, it has really helped me not to eat after 7 or 7:30…
