  • I've just returned from a week's swordfighting in a Welsh castle.
  • When you can ride, the place that gets sorest is your abs - it's a great core-building exericse! Before the Olympics, they showed a documentary about dressage riding in which they attached electrodes to the abs of one member of team GB to measure how much they were used. It turns out that at her level, every step of…
  • So, to all those people saying that you can't count strolling to the refrigerator - how many times would you have to do that to reach 10 miles? I'm sure most of it would have to be in a good, solid, heart-rate-raising chunk.
  • I easily covered similar distances on patrol in my last job as a ranger. Believe me, for some people, work is cardio. Just because you sit in an office... And I did wear a pedometer, both to track my exercise and simply out of curiosity.
  • Because the tour guiding company I freelance for has specifically requested me for their Game of Thrones tour tomorrow. They don't know whether I watch GOT (I don't), they just said they thought I must be the type!
  • I just converted the rest of my gaming group to the greatness that is Space Patrol Orion.
  • Yesterday, I went for a run in the park. Wearing running tights. In public. And when I ran past a couple of giggling teenagers, I didn't automatically assume they were laughing at me!
  • Chivalry definitely isn't dead. I'm training my horse up for jousting. ;) As for politness, excellent - but I prefer it if people are polite to everyone, not just women. I have no problem holding doors for anyone. I do detest being called "ma'am", though, makes me feel old and frumpy.
  • Instead of frozen food, I eat a lot of stir fries, because they're pretty much instant. Especially when you buy the pre-chopped bags - making them yourself makes no sense for one person, I find. Add some noodles or rice and whatever protein you like - eggs, tofu, cashew nuts, etc - and you have a quick, filling, and…
  • I really don't care whether the seat is up or down. It's people of either sex who don't close the lid before they flush that really annoy me.
  • Having more time for the number one guy in my life, my horse... I can spend four hours a day at the barn and nobody complains! Also, the freedom to look for jobs Europe-wide without taking someone else into account.
  • Today I'm a mega-nerd by proxy. Our DM just announced that he's leaving to start a job at the Large Hadron Collider!
  • I grew up on a farm, so it was eggs with everything as a cheap meal. Especially pancakes, because they could be made on the wood stove when the power was out. (Happened quite a lot because we were so remote.) I still have eggs with everything because I get them free at work. Really tasty free-range eggs. The day I moved…
  • Thanks, Ely - that's right, over here we think the rest of you are spelling it wrong! (Also, segastler, if you're going to criticise my spelling, at least use the right "you're" yourself ;-) ) And I wasn't trying to go off target. But seriously, beer - especially 6 pints in a sitting - is a lot of empty calories, and…
  • If you can't socialise without alcohol, it's not the socialising that's the problem. Just saying...
  • On the day I went to try out for the university equestrian team, I'd forgotten my riding trousers and was wearing a skirt, so I changed into the old leather trousers I had in the back of the car (useful for walking, as windproof). I figured they'd be extra grippy. Unfortunately, they were just slightly too tight to let me…
  • Fingers crossed for you! I don't compete, makes life much easier ;)
  • Today I'm a nerd because I promised to help a friend move in return for XP...
  • I'm not sure the bodymedia would be accurate - doesn't it rely on an accelerometer? I doubt it realises you're not reaching that speed under your own steam. 350 for an hour's schooling would be more like it. I use MapMyRun when I hack to track cals that way. I also use it for hiking, biking, and running, and riding is the…
  • Busy putting together a costume for ComiCon - Helen Narbon. Should be easy, I already have the foofy fair hair and glasses, just need a lab coat and her t-shirt.
  • I really didn't like 11, I'm afraid, and I liked Clara even less. 9 and 10 were better. It may be clichéd, but 4 all the way.

  • I'm confused. Teeny, tiny shield, or codpiece?
  • ...I just sewed a medieval dress and matching cap/veil in an evening, interrupted only by fencing practice!
  • Thanks, luv2all - it was the classic story, girl meets horse, girl loses horse, girl gets horse back forever.
  • Find a bicycle - you can get a cheap second-hand one - and use that for your transport. Saves money *and* gets you exercise. Worked for me as a student.
  • Because I'm making progress with my jousting skills! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb9wtkD3UYI&feature=youtu.be
  • No joy, I take it? I wonder whether we can get the moderators to give one of us group permissions.
  • Aww, only just saw your reply there! It's not over yet - though we seem to be doing quite well at "happily ever after". :D
  • I work in an open-air museum, so I had soda bread baked over an open turf fire and eggs laid by chickens that I know personally!
  • ...because I'm packing my bags for an SCA event. Archery all weekend, yay!
