WOW I feel shamed by the amount of races some of you have scheduled! :) April 26 Color me Rad 5K (3rd year tradition to take my son :) May 4th Lincoln Half June 8th Warrior Dash June 22 Duluth Half That's all I have lined up :( I will probably do another half in the fall just have to decide on which one or two. I did one…

I wish I could give you advice..but have only ran a full once..so you got me beat! Good luck though!!!

I have a about an 8-9 year old terrier mix, around 40 lbs and all legs. I have taken him running on several long runs with me, but 11 miles seems to be his limit, well he starts to slow down. But I don't run fast (around 10 min miles) so his long legs he is pretty much just trotting next to me. He can just pick up and run…

I believe some people just have a higher heart rate threshold. I have ran 5 half marathons and 1 marathon. I have been running pretty consistently for just over 2 years. When I run my heart rate is between 150-175. My resting heart rate is between 48-55. So I believe my cardio is just fine, but yet I have a higher heart…

You can't change someone. But you can motivate them. We are planning a vacation this summer that will involve some beach time. So I got off my butt (been on an exercise hiatus since I ran a marathon in October) grabbed the scale, stuck it on kitchen floor and looked at my husband and said we are doing this together. He…

I run differently on a treadmill than I do outside. I tend to be more of heel striker on the treadmill but tend to land more midfoot when I run outside. So it could be your stride that is causing you pain on threadmill vs. outside.

I am in the same boat, I can eat great all day, get my exercise in, then blow it all at night! Two things I do that works..no junk food in the house! It helps that I made my husband step on a scale last week ;) so he is on board with no junk in the house! I have fruit to snack on if I really "need" a snack. But I find the…

The only goal I have right now is a sub 2 half. Got so close on 3 of my halves this year (2:02 in May 2:00:36 in June and 2:00:32 in September) just can't seem to break the 2 hour mark. But gunning for it this spring! I ran my first full in October, so I'm going to sit on that for awhile. No more of those for awhile ;)

I might suggest, not doing the loop twice. Running is hard, and for some people it is just hard. I have ran 5 half marthons and just finished my first full, and running is still hard! There are lots of times I go out and just don't feel like running. But as some of the other posters said, the first 1-2 miles are the…

I have tried running with a pace group twice. One was my 3rd half this last spring..My sister and I started with the 2:05 group, there were two pacers, the chick took off to the bathroom twice before the first water stop and the guy stopped early at the first water stop and we lost them so we went ahead without them and…

The night before I usually eat some spaghetti but it I have read that it is really 36 hours before race that you would want to "carb load" So two nights before my races (or really long runs) I will eat some pasta. I did that and take Gu (well cliff shots actually) during the race, and I just ran my first marathon and…

that sounds like a great idea about holding off the music until the end. I never thought of that. I typically don't like the headphones (I have tired several pairs) as one of the reasons I choose to not listen to music. Plus I have been a afraid it would be like a crutch for me...but using it at the end..sounds genius :)…

I am truely thankful for my support system, but then again if it wasn't for my "coach" I probably wouldn't have signed up for the full anyways, so he owed it to me to help me finish :grumble: Seriously though, it did make a huge difference. I'm sure I would have come in closer to 5:20 if it wasn't for them helping me and…

You are so right! running is just like a bad marriage :) and my legs prove the whole getting hurt thing...and I am already planning my weekend run :)
-
Thanks, I am proud I finished, and that I can call myself a marathoner :) Advice...honestly I wish I knew how to prepare better mentally. Maybe music would have helped, if you listen to music. Anything to take you "out of the moment" . I have been told deep breathing, concentrate on your breathing.. I honestly thought I…

I feel ya..my first marthon is 4 weeks away. I have gotten my long runs in.I have run two 20 milers and this weekend I'm set for a 22 miler. But my legs are so tired....running has become a chore! But I believe that is what we are suppose to feel like..well at least the tired part :) I have felt very defeated on a lot of…

I have wondered the same thing. If I fail at a race (not hit a PR or goal) it is always my mind..I give up! My first full is 4 weeks away, and I'm more afraid of giving up than my legs failing. I have run two 20 milers but both have been with my sister who is also training for the same full. But I have my last long run…

I am currenlty training for my first full. My long run goes to 22, and I have two 20 milers. As for the weekly runs, my schedule is a lot like yours. Most of my weekly runs are in the 4-6 range . Every other week I have an additional 3 miler day. But my scedule calls for Monday runs raning from 6-10 miles. I run at lunch…

my A goal is sub 4, but I'll be eccastic with 4:30 or better. My last two PR'd halves, the first in May (2:03) I had a cough for 2 weeks leading up to race, actually had a coughing attack in the line up, luckily a lady near me had a mint to help. The next one was 6 weeks later when I got the 2:00 and it was extremly humid…

Well my half was 2 months ago, so I will have 4 months more of training for my full. I am also running two halves this month. One of those halves will be following a 20 mile Saturday run and Sunday 10K race. So I figure I can pull of a PR of 1:55 or better at that half with no taper, then I have a better shot. I understand…
-
Please do! I'll be courious to know how you do. Good luck! I still have 10 weeks to go, but I hit my first 20 miler this weekend!

I started out running alone and still run most of my runs alone. But I did run with some co-workers last year, we were all training for different spring events but we kept eachother motivated running through the winter. It was great. We all did part our ways as we all ran different paces. But it was great and it was the…

Got a small town half on September 1st (hoping to place-when I mean small, I mean small 40 people ran the half last year  ) a Cororate cup 10K September 15th Omaha Half September 22nd Des Moines Full October 20th (my first full)

Ok..My next question..how much base work are you all talking about? I have been running for two year, almost always on a training schedule for a half. I have ran 4 halves in the last two years (3 of which were this year) . I understand that you need a solid base to pull of a decent time for a full marathon and the proper…

I don't like the consistancy of the gu's and started using the chews. I started with the Clif Shot Blocks as they were a little more natural then some of the other chews, and easier on my stomach. But I have recently found the honey sticker chews, which I love! They are easier to chew and don't bother my stomach. I…

That is a lot! I am a heavy salty sweater and I run a lot (training for full marathon) So I watch my sodium intake. I like it to be a little on the higher side. But I can tell one thing I found surprisingly high in sodium...shrimp...I made some bacon wrapped shrimp, and when I looked at the sodium content it was huge! for…

I have the Nike sports watch. It works pretty well, the distance can be off during the spring/summer with all the trees. But normally not more than a few tenths of a mile. I like the Nike because you can also use the Nike App on your smartphone and they all synce up together. If you have an arm band it can gauge your…

If getting massages or foam rolling is part of you normal routine than I'm sure it wouldn't cause any problems. But if you don't typically get massages, I wouldn't recommend doing so right before a race. http://www.outsideonline.com/fitness/fitness-coach/Before-My-Race-When-Should-I-Get-a-Massage.html…
-
The massage may not have helped..did you get a deep tissue massage? I don't think you are suppose to get a masage within a couple weeks of a race because it releases all the toxins in your muscles and you need to drink a lot of water to flush you system, it is a possible you didn't drink enough water...I wouldnt' get a…

as for signing up for the second race, I think you can probably do that. I ran two races 6 weeks apart with no problem and actually PR'd at both of them. I have two half marathons scheduled for September and my first full in October. I know your feeling. When I finished my first half I was 10-20 minutes slower than I had…
