  • I average 10k to 12k steps a day. I love waking! I can't do intense cardio for medical reasons (I pass out. It's cool, but scary).
  • Hi. I just replied to your reddit post I think. Howdy.
  • Just ordered my Charge HR. I've had a Polar F15 in the past (with the chest strap in the pre-smart phone connectivity era). I track steps on my phone pedometer now but this will be much better. Yay!
  • Is there an active new mom group? My son is 12 weeks and I'm trying to lose the weight with post-C section friendly exercise.
  • I work at least full time (my husband calls me a work-a-holic...) and have a 12 week old son. That equates to very little sleep, big mood swings, making lots of mistakes at work, and generally being a bit of a zombie. But a zombie who eats healthy food and counts her steps! I will take any other new mom friends. This is…
  • If 'new mom' extends to age 3 I'm screwed. My son is 12 weeks. This is NEW! and HARD! But eating healthy and exercising is important. Losing the baby weight will come with that. I let my weight go in high school and college and realized around senior year I was clinically obese. And freaked out, joined weight watchers,…
  • I get bored when all I'm doing is sitting on my butt surfing the web or watching TV. I'm more inclined to eat out of boredom then. If the goal is to not get bored and eat, don't do things that are boring! Find a hobby! Get out of your house. Do something. Volunteer. Experience the world.
  • Some medications do have side effects that make it hard to lose weight, but your first goal should be STABILITY! Meds will probably help you have a more positive outlook, do more active things that make you feel happier, and take away some of the negative brain messages that depression throws in the way. Good luck. IMO…
  • I've found that setting goals (rules) like that set me up for failure. I'm in this for life. Not necessarily tracking forever, but healthy living forever. If you take that view it may change everything. Your choices stop being focused on short term, but it requires eating and exercising that are sustainable. I believe…
  • I buy beans from local coffee shops that are roasted locally...then again, I live in Seattle.
  • The point of exercise is not to justify eating tons of food or unhealthy foods. That's ridiculous! The point of exercise is to use your body. To get stronger. To be healthier. To help keep things in good working order LONG TERM. If you're only exercising to get more food you're thinking about this all wrong.
  • If they have wifi at the house you don't need a cell connection. but more importantly, you have learned a lot of skills about healthy eating. Portion control. LOTS of vegetables. Avoiding processed foods/added sugars/etc. If you follow those guidelines you'll be fine. In some ways this could be a great chance to prove to…
  • I think you start with taking care of yourself. That's medical treatment for the PF and buying/cooking healthy foods for you to eat. If your husband & older kids insist on sweets in the house you can't STOP them, but you can set boundaries like no snack foods in the TV room, or the computer room, or whatever. You can make…
  • As a size 8-10, sitting at a table with people who never knew me as a size 16. One girl was describing another girl to me and said "she was tiny, like your size". ??? TINY and ME had never been in the same sentence before. I was ELATED.
  • I'd guess you're in your early 20s. That's not a bad thing, but it does color your current world view. How you feel about yourself (in general in your own head), and the way you receive attention from both men and women is likely to morph as you age and mature. Getting healthier will certainly get you more sexual…
  • I had a polar F15 for years and loved it and used it. I just ordered a Basis B1. This thing not only calculates calories burned, but also tracks my steps, my time standing vs. sitting, the quality of my sleep, etc. It's spendy ($200) but I'm excited about the additional features for overall health improvement.…
  • First: correlation doesn't equal causation. Period. But for my snarky response, are the church goers storing up their treasures in heaven while the rest of us live for the present? That is a huge psychological shift I've seen among the devoutly religious vs. devoutly atheistic.
  • My docs thought I had that for years but now they're just confused. When I exercise hard my blood pressure doesn't go up properly so I'm light headed, I have chest pain, I breath far too rapidly, and then if I don't slow down I black out and pass out completely. Kinda scary. After years of medical tests they gave up so I…
  • I've had lots of motivators over the years, but the most recent is that I'm going to start trying to get pregnant in a few months. I want to be the healthiest me I can be when I get pregnant, am pregnant, and am a mom! My whole family deserves that.
  • Ahh. I was writing while others replied. Thanks!
  • OK, now I'm really confused. I'm getting "yes" and "no" answers. I am also using a machine that adds resistance to my motions (the reformer) so I think that's comparable to adding weight. Some motions (like squats and lunges) are at most my body weight. Others utilize the resistance of the machine. I think I'm getting…
  • so is it contributing to building muscle?
  • I just got back from a 3 week honeymoon and I lost ~ 4 lb! I also expected to be really struggling with pilates when I got back, but I wasn't! YAY for active vacations.
  • Making changes that weren't sustainable. Diets start and end. Healthy eating/behavior is FOR LIFE. I started my weight loss journey in high school. I'm in my 30s now and only in the last few years have I truly understood that to change my body I have to PERMANENTLY change my lifestyle. Now I: Cut calories to a place I can…
  • y'all are more dedicated than me! I know the calories on packages are off, my estimates of sizes are off, calories burned during exercise is an estimate, etc. As a result, I aim to track the big stuff, and do 'well enough' (I'm losing slowly and happily). I forget condiments, I estimate recipes, I'm pretty lazy I guess.
  • I can relate to your fear. My mother also died of cancer when she was 50. I'm only 32 but part of me is already bracing for it to 'get me'. We are just starting to try to get pregnant so don't even get me started on the fear of dying with youngish kids. My solution when this fear hits is to focus on medical advances. I…
  • Exercise can be any movement. Do you like dancing? Window shopping? Gardening? Swimming? Anything that gets you off the couch and moving around is a great start.
  • I'm 5'5" and the top of the BMI range says I should aim for 150. The last time I was in that range I was 23 years old and a curvy size 8. I'd be THRILLED to get back to a size 8. I'm a very curvy size 12 right now (~170 lb). However, I can already hike for days and rock out at pilates class so building strength is more…
  • It is my responsibility to remain youthful in spirit, vibrant, and healthy for myself and my partner. We both value those things and we both expect them of each other. If he stopped being that guy he wouldn't be the person I fell in love with, or someone I could easily respect. Taking care of ourselves and our bodies is…
  • For me the key is to get rid of the perfection. I can focus all my energy on picking the perfect food, tracking every ounce, taking a ton of time to play, to put the specific detailed log entry, etc. I lost weight this way, but I can't do it forever. I'm TERRIBLE at tracking 'good enough' and making healthy choices long…
