  • I have the same problem as JSMOMMY. I swing my arms a lot and my calorie trackers always give me huge burns. I've had days where just walking I burn 4000 calories.
  • In my first marathon, someone commented how great I was doing and how I was one of the first females they saw that day and I was so inspiring. I sobbed for the next mile and a half.
  • I find that on long easy runs, I tend to get bored and that makes me want to go faster. I don't mind looking like an insane person, so if I get worried about my pace I just try to softly sing the song playing on my iPod. If I feel or sound like I am even slightly out of breath, I slow down. It makes me sing better, so I am…
  • I have two pieces of advice: 1- Unless you are trying to qualify for a world record, and are going over 13 minute miles, don't worry about the time that you finish in. I know for me that if I can focus on how I feel instead of what the clock on your wrist says. If you have a mile that takes 9 minutes, and the next mile…
  • I am CowboyJeddie I've been on the site for years, but am just now getting into the swing of logging my training on the site (was at Training Peaks for far too long). I am going to be very active, very soon.
  • TabbiKat- for what it's worth, I have run and walked a lot of 5K's. There will be A LOT of people walking the whole thing . It's a fun experience and if you can get a group together, it makes it a lot better. It's runs like these that started me on a long and (mostly) wonderful journey of running. Don't worry about not…
  • For what it's worth, they cause migraines for me, but if they are not the cause of the migraine, they probably won't aggravate it. To the OP, for what it's worth, the research is still out on whether or not artificial sweeteners are bad for you. Some studies showed a correlation between cancer and lab rodents, but the…
  • I run with Powerbar Vanilla and green apple gels mostly. On longer runs, my body requires salt tablets along with powerbar gels. (Powerbar has the most sodium per gel of all the major brands). I go through salt at a faster rate than most people, but after talking with my doctor and nutritionist, that's what works for me.…
  • That one is "Trash" and it's awesome.
  • War Stories, because for whatever reason, seeing River kill those men with her eyes closed is a scene that still gets to me this day.
  • Don't get a new bra for the marathon. I really don't think it's a wise idea. I'm a 32E and I know it takes forever for me to get a new bra to a comfortable place. You may not like it, but a sports tape/ seal skin is probably the best idea. After that, give it a few days to rest and heal and after that, see if you can try…
  • I run with a fuel belt as well. I don't like having things in my hands when I'm running (I punched myself pretty hard in the face when I was trying to wipe sweat off my brow once). I like the fuel belt that holds the 4 little water bottles. I am a camel though, but for marathon training in the summer, I wouldn't trade it…
  • It happens to me as well. My nutritionist let me know that (for me at least), it's the blood vessels near my skin opening up in an attempt to regulate my body temperature and is very very normal. Moving your hands should help (squeezing them together every now and then), keeping yourself cool, and staying hydrated should…
  • If you had never done a tri before, I would advise against it, but since this is your 3rd, you almost definitely have the base you need. I say do it and have fun with it! For what it's worth, when I was in your boat, I had almost the exact same training plan. One thing I might add is a day where you do both a bike and a…
  • You and I are the same height and weight, so I'd be happy to look at your diary for what it's worth (it's closed to me as well :) ). In the meantime, for what it's worth, I hit a plateau with weight loss running too. Once I got into tris, and I started exercising different muscle groups, I found the weight started to come…
  • Another Marine Corps trainee here. This will be my 4th time running Marine Corps (this year, since I moved, I will literally run by my house, which makes choosing it very easy). Doing Austin in February as well. Can't decide half or full on that one.
  • Thanks for the advice folks! I'll stop logging them!
  • Arlingtonian who spends my 9-5 out near Tyson's Corner where I can only walk around my office building. I am not native to the area, though I've been here 11 years, so I know enough not to be looking forward to this summer heat that's coming. I am a little bit of a dabbler (I've tried everything I can think of- rock…
  • When I was trying to figure out what I wanted, this review was very helpful: http://www.getgrok.com/2013/01/a-comparative-review-28-days-with-the-fitbit-one-jawbone-up-nike-fuelband-and-bodymedia-link/ For what it's worth, I have the Jawbone Up. Since I can't take bluetooth into my work space, the Jawbone Up was my only…
  • I know exactly how you feel. I am training for a triathlon right now, and whenever possible, I do open water swims since I can wear a wet suit. When I do go to the pool, it's never enjoyable since I am so anxious. I still do it, but man, I never look forward to those days.
  • I'm with Carson on this one. Getting used to running on tired legs is a good idea.
  • I love burritos and I make my own so I can freeze them. Cous Cous, baked chicken, peppers and salsa, spinach tortilla, whatever else- you wrap them in cling wrap and then aluminum foil and then re-heat them like you would any burrito (usually 1.5-2 minutes). Complete time saver for me. I also often have soups.
  • Because I can't take the Fitbit into my workplace (since you can't turn off the bluetooth), I have the Jawbone Up (it was my only option). I find it...okay. Most of my friends that have the Fitbit love it. They seem to enjoy the customer service. They find it accurate and speak highly of it. For the Jawbone- I have had…
  • I am impressed either of you try to show logic with the "weight lifters are the only way crowd." I was darn near run out of this site when I mentioned that I did both weight training and running and both were crucial to my weight loss. For anyone else that stumbles on this thread, here is the link to the (very good)…
  • Awesome that you signed up for your first race! That's a really fun one! For the pain- as the poster above me said, it would probably help to get professionally fitted shoes. I had a very similar pain by my knee and after I got new shoes the pain went away. My patellar tendon (the tendon that runs along the knee cap) was…
  • Feel free to add me as well. The people I have met on here have been wonderful motivators for me!
  • Nice job guys! So excited to see so many long distance runners on here. Your enthusiasm often keeps me going. I am doing my third full in October, so I am trying to find a fun half that won't cost me an arm and a leg.
  • I struggled with something similar for a long time. I was having all sorts of health issues (your problem being one of a litany of many of mine), and the thing that finally worked was seeing an allergist. Turns out, I am allergic to fleece. Every time I would go to sleep, I would make myself just a little bit sicker.…
  • Arlington/Clarendon area and I'd be happy to have more running buddies!
  • Feel free to add me as well. I just started making MFP friends, and I have found it to be incredibly motivating so far. From the DC area, but happy to have friends from wherever!
