If you are taking asthma medication such as albuterol, it can raise your heart rate. I so understand the problems with exercising with an elevated heart rate. It is one of the things that kept me from exercising for years (I mean decades!). Unfortunately, not exercising led me to further poor cardio health, weight gain and…

Yes, you could just have a high resting heart rate. Also, it could be because you were walking and had only "rested" for five minutes. Try measuring your heart rate after lying down for 30 minutes or so and see if that makes a difference. Here is what the Mayo Clinic website has to say about "normal" resting heart rates:…

Welcome! Be sure to read through the threads and decide for yourself if you want to up your calories slowly or quickly. And do be aware that you are likely to gain a bit during the first few weeks, especially if you've been on a low-calorie diet for some time. Do not let the scale changes deter you from continuing with the…

Wait. Those numbers don't compute. If your TDEE is 2864 and your daily deficit is 513, that would be a TDEG (Total Daily Eating Goal) of 2,351 calories (no eating back exercise calories because those are figured into your TDEE).
-
You have a nice high TDEE. If I were you, I'd eat at TDEE - 20% ... or 2291. According to Dan (of the Roadmap group), IF you have a BMI over 40, you can get away with TDEE - 30% ... or 2005 calories. Did the spreadsheet tell you to eat at BMR? If so, I'd ask Heybales or Dan (both on the Roadmap group) about that, because…

The 1530 *might* be just a tad bit low, depending on your exercise and amount of lean body mass. I am also 5' 4", but I am 53 years old with a high body fat percentage. I am currently 229 pounds (down from 249) and I have my calorie target set to 1570. Actually, I consider myself "on target if I hit anywhere between 1560…

I have been concentrating on keeping my back straight, but have not thought much about keeping my shoulders down. And I think it's quite possible that I am lifting too high, because I'm lifting higher than parallel. Last week I attempted to move up from the light band to the medium band for these exercises, but I was not…

^^^This! For me, it means counting calories, eating foods that are high in protein and filling (chicken), and eating foods that I enjoy (chocolate, tacos, enchiladas) in moderation. Oh, and I'm doing something I haven't done in 30 years. I'm exercising, not a lot, but as much as I can comfortably do.

At what age do we old people become "gross"?
-
Different people have different ideas about cheat meals. Personally, I don't do "cheat" meals. This is because I don't think anything I put in my mouth is "cheating". I'm usually pretty good about eating within my allotted calories. Therefore, anything I eat is (mostly) without guilt. As long as I get close to (or over) my…

I probably don't belong here because I don't like Pop Tarts. My kids used to eat them. I'd take a bite and think, blah, bland, not enough sweet. I think I'll stick to my daily cookies and chocolate ... yes, I'm serious. My diary is open. I can't bring a half gallon of ice-cream into my home. It is my one weakness. But I do…

This is the scale I purchased -- and I am so glad I did! Read the reviews. The company has an excellent reputation for backing its product. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles (ie: body fat estimate, bone density, BMI or any of those other things) But it is accurate and it weighs in 0.2 (2/10th) of a pound…

I felt like a stuffed pig when I was eating at TDEE for my reset. Part of my problem was trying to do it by eating only healthy low-calorie foods. Once I added in some Kashi cookies, avocados and nuts it got easier. Edited to add ... My favorite TDEE / BMR "calculator" is a spreadsheet put together by heybales:…

YES!!! I can do about 10 (kitchen counter) push-ups. And I'm scared to death that I'm going to slip and knock my teeth out!

I picked up a Polar FT4. I manually plug my training data into an Excel spreadsheet. The Polar FT7 looks pretty good, too. It can transmit your workout numbers to your computer automatically (with a $50 add-on component). Read about both here: http://www.polar.com/en The BodyBugg, Bodymedia Link and Bodymedia Core are not…

Don't buy a whole new HRM -- unless you are getting a super killer deal. You can get a replacement band from Amazon for less than $20. http://www.amazon.com/Polar-WearLink-Replacement-Strap-Medium-XX-Large/dp/B000F7F64I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1363055733&sr=8-3&keywords=Polar+wearlink

It sounds like you know exactly what you want and how to do it. As you know, a 15% cut is about 300 calories, so it will take time for the pounds to come off. But better for the loss to be slow and steady while you are eating and retaining muscle than have it be fast--which usually results in temporary weight loss.

Exactly! I have no problem with artificial sweeteners, nuts or dairy. But ... I get nasty-scary heart palpitations from protein powder. (still hoping to isolate the problem ingredient and find a tasty powder that I can use -- if not for shakes, then at least in homemade protein bars and other recipes).

You look AWESOMELY HOT my friend! Your hard work has certainly paid off!!

Ooooh....then I might need to take the Costco leap before the sale is over. :-)

You don't need a Kindle or anything fancy. Just your computer. I downloaded something on the Amazon site called Kindle Cloud (free) that lets me read e-books on my laptop.

Cute! Is the big dog the daddy?

Mine is part German Shepherd and part Chinese Sharpei. He doesn't like strangers but he loves his mommy. :-)

BIG HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to those of you who have quit smoking. The first month is the hardest. After that, it gets less hard and then, one day, you become one of those people who hate the smell of cigarette smoke outside restaurants and on people sitting nearby. ;-) I have been smoke free (the legal and the not-so-legal)…

Some ice creams: Starbucks Java Chip, cookie dough, vanilla between chocolate chip cookies, mint n chip, Moose Tracks. Ice creams that I love are the ONLY foods I do not bring into the house as I do not trust myself to limit my indulgence to a single serving. (Oddly enough, I'd have no problem if there was rocky road,…

I don't own one of these, but the best deal I've seen is at Costco. The price is currently $119 and it comes with a 1-year subscription (as opposed to a 3-month subscription). Not only that, but Costco has a great return policy. Edited to add a link:…

Go to the My Home tab. Then click on "Weigh in" on the left OR "check in" in the tabs above. You will see a place where you can update your weight and add in your measurements.

It is so refreshing to read a post from someone who is not afraid of artificial sweeteners! Granted, some people have allergies, illnesses or an intolerance to some of these sweeteners, but then I know people who can't ingest cantaloupe, nuts, watermelon, strawberries, shellfish, tofu or milk. Maltitol is one of the…

Interesting article. Thanks for the link! I do want to increase my cardio performance (currently very poor) and lose fat, but don't want to chance losing what little bit of lean body mass I have. I am very out of shape and unable to sustain a workout at an elevated heart rate. So, I guess for me, it's opposite of the…

I LOVE heybales' spreadsheet! It is fun to use, educational to see what makes the numbers change, and provides an easily accessible place to BMR & TDEE changes over time. But .... It does not use batteries and it does not cost $100 and I can't carry it everywhere I go and it does not tell me if I'm asleep or awake. (Still…
