I also vote for the long, flowy dresses. They used to be favorite in the summer ... until I got a bunch of ugly permanent bruises after a missed step and tumble down some stairs. UGH. I don't get hot flashes when it's cool. But during the summer they come on with a vengeance. It is not unusual for me to wake in the morning…

Two weeks ago, mine hit 193 (116% of my "max" heart rate according to my Polar FT4). Sadly, I was only sort of jogging. It was my first attempt at C25, which was walking for 90 seconds followed by jogging for 60 seconds. Had I been really running ... like for my life ... I'd probably have dropped dead of a heart attack. As…

I'm trying, but I just can't seem to do it. I can barely catch up to the bandwagon and every time I try to jump on board, it moves and I slip and fall on my face. OK ... it's not quite that bad. But it's not easy. There are days when it's all I can do to get in my 7,000 Fitbit steps. And this week I fell short almost every…

The sad truth is that those of us with a lot of weight to lose can live on fewer calories. We have plenty of fat stores for our body to draw energy from. Personally, I don't see a problem with those of us with LOTS of weight to lose (not 15-20 pounds) eating below our BMR for a few weeks at a time. However, my fear is that…

Mine shows that I burn 6 calories for every 5 minutes of sleep or inactivity. At 6 calories per minute, my BMR would be 1,728. At 5 calories per minute, my BMR would be 1,440. My Roadmap spreadsheet gives me a BMR of 1,497, which is approx. 5.2 calories per 5 minutes. To add even more info ... and maybe a bit more…

I gave the exercises a try with good and bad results. So embarrassed. I failed miserably at the squats and lunges. Not sure if it's because my leg muscles are too weak, if it's because my body is too heavy, or if it's because I have poor balance. I'm thinking it's all three. With both exercises (even without the bands),…

I see that you are young. I wonder if you would enjoy Zumba? I know that some communities have Zumba classes. There are some (high cost) Zumba DVDs that people seem to like. Even some Zumba video games. I've seen them on YouTube ... they look like kind of fun, unless you're like me and have two left feet. :-)

Congrats! I did the same thing a couple weeks back. It was a nice milestone. :-) I started out with a BMI of 43 (middle of morbidly obese scale) and am now at 38.1 (severely obese) ... with a long way yet to go. I have a tentative goal weight in mind that will put me at 24.9 (highest end of "normal") but I'm not even sure…

I got my Polar FT4 on sale at Sears.com for $45.99. Shortly after, they ran out of stock and then the price jumped back to $89.99. I I did notice that Amazon has it on sale for $59.99. It's the ugly bronze one (like mine), but for the price I did not complain.…

Thanks! I'll take a look at the videos later tonight (or tomorrow) and will give it a go. I'll let you know how I do. :-)

Baby Steps: slow and steady will get me to the finish line. Yo-yo diets ... been there, done that, too many times to count. This time, I'm taking a new approach. I am not depriving myself. I am not starving myself. I am not killing myself with exercise. Everything in moderation, including tacos, ice-cream and chocolate.…

I tried it on the treadmill and failed miserably. I could not get into a "jog" motion until I had the treadmill going so fast that I could not breathe (about 4.0 mph). I'm very out of shape and have poor cardio endurance, so that didn't help. Like others, I had concerns about my balance. There was just something about…

Oddly enough, when I was young and thin, male strangers were nicer and female strangers were not. Now that I'm old and fat, male strangers tend to ignore me and female strangers appear to find me approachable. I think it's the gray hair. I have a matronly, grandmotherly look. LOL

Yes, I *think* it is supposed to be released the middle of May. Might be hard to find one in the first couple of weeks because a lot of people have already pre-ordered. I noticed that Fitbit and Amazon pre-orders, both show as "sold out". Do note that it does not count flights of stairs ... which I don't find to be a big…

I downloaded "C25k Free" on my android phone. It's a complete C25k program and it's FREE!

I just posted this in another thread, so I'll copy and paste it here: I have a Fitbit One and a heart rate monitor. They do very different things. The HRM monitors your heart rate during exercise and calculates the calories you burned during your workout -- only during your workout. (Note that it is not considered to be…

I'm screwed. I had better prepare myself for a face of a Shar Pei and the ankles of an elephant. I've already got the bat wings.

This looks yummy! I am going to give this a try -- and toss it a bit of chicken. Mmmmm

Thanks to all you for the replies and encouragement. When I first started reading in this group, I thought everyone here was born and raised in a gym. OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I half expected people not to take me seriously since I can't jog 5 miles, bench press 200 pounds or deadlift twice my body…

Congrats on the new wife and the decision to become healthier. I have no idea why being active seems to come so naturally to some but not to the rest of us. At least we aren't waiting until we are too old make changes.

I do have a C25k app. It's called "C25k Free". I did Week 1, Day 1 and 2 last Monday and Tuesday. Repeated Week 1, Day 1 today. It might be a couple weeks before I can move up to Week 2, but I'm in no hurry. I don't want to push myself to injury or burnout, but I do want to Eat, Train and PROGRESS. My theme for 2013 is:…

Wonderful news! It just shows that there is a light even in our darkest times. And you two are shining bright. What a wonderful new start!

My new protein go-to is cottage cheese. But I'm picky. I only like the Simply Kraft 2% cottage cheese. (180 calories and 22 grams of protein in each 244g (1 cup) portion) I usually eat it with a snack pack portion of Dole mandarin oranges in juice (80 cals) or Del Monte in artificially sweetened water (45 cals). I like to…

Yes, I do. It's an android.

Ain't that the truth! My younger sister had a heart attack in her early 40s. While in the hospital, she learned that she also had diabetes. She's is overweight but nothing like me. She is strong and active, the last person I ever thought would have a heart attack. I'll have to take a look at the Skimble site. It sounds…

I have two digital scales, one for the bathroom and a couple months ago I got one for the kitchen. I use it for nearly everything ... including my 34g of salad dressing. Much more accurate than using measuring spoons or measuring cups.

I like veggies. I love raw spinach. But I'm not so sure how I feel about drinking it. I took a look at the site. I might give the "Beginner's Luck" smoothie a try. I certainly could use the energy. Not sure if the problem is my diet, though. I'm coming out of a little run in with depression. It had a really nasty hold on…

If you stay above your BMR, you will give your body the calories it needs to keep working for the long haul. If you stay below your TDEE, you won't gain additional weight. Ideally, you'd take your TDEE and subtract your "cut" (10%, 15%, 20% depending on how much weight you have to lose). Lets say you chose 15%: Your TDEE…

No money for a gym membership. My equipment is very limited: light, medium & heavy resistance bands with a door attachment treadmill 1 - 10-lb dumbell 2 - 3-lb dumbells Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds DVD Floor mat (I don't have carpet in my house) Fitbit I would be willing to spend up to $100 on additional equipment,…
