Generally speaking, to burn calories you need to do exercise that gets your heart rate up to 60%-85% of maximum. The higher your heart rate and the longer the duration of the exercise, the more calories you burn.

I think I work hard, I work out at about 80-90 percent one rep max but I rest one minute between sets. It seems so different for calorie burn from cardiovascular work.
