If you eat too little calories a day, your body will go into starvation mode and store fat. If you work out for an hour each day, you need to be eating more calories than that.

I'm 23 and an avid runner as well. I also have outer knee pain on my right knee. I went to the ortho and he confirmed it was in ITB injury. He recommended I get new shoes. I rested it for a week and bought a new pair of shoes. 2 months later and I am not experiencing the pain. It's all in the shoes.

I use a heart rate monitor and log it manually. If you don't own one I would highly recommend it, as you will get an accurate amount of calories burned. If you can't afford one, I would definitely log it as aerobic.
