  • It should be a bit easier for me as I work from home so most FDs there are no temptations if I pre-log and it's just a case of preparing and eating what I set out to. Had a bit of a strange day today, a feast day after a fast day and my macros have gone out the window but I managed to stay within the calories I wanted to.…
  • I asked about this and as it shows the message if you eat what MFP considers too low, you can just ignore it and log what you want, the only thing is it won't allow you to submit the entry and post it to your wall. It keeps the info though and you will still see it in your reports.
  • Kellysdavies this is from the Independent, though it was in the Mail and several other papers and news sources worldwide recently: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/too-much-jogging-may-be-as-bad-for-you-as-not-running-at-all-study-suggests-10020478.html Re. 1200 calories, I agree that…
  • I read that too, saw it in an English news source, might have been BBC, can't remember. Look it up I'm sure you'll find it. Conclusion was you shouldn't run for more than 2.5 hours a week.
  • Yes and I'm 5'4", 40 years old and a very small build and trying to lose 25lbs of unhealthily high body fat. I weigh 140lbs and maintain on 1500. In order to lose weight (slowly, not fast) the only way I can is to eat very low calories around 1000 per day or do a load of exercise. At the moment I'm in the position of being…
  • Thanks Kaytee, I had a faulty Polar HRM so I've sent it off to Polar to be fixed and then I'll hopefully have a more accurate idea of calorie burns during workouts. I am basing my current burn figures on old HRM statistics from 2 years ago (though workouts were the same anyway) but I don't know if anything has changed…
  • JeriAnne I know what you mean about doing another 90 days! I am not just over halfway through the first round and by the time I finish it will be the end of March and then 90 days after will be the end of June. It starts getting really hot here from mid-May so I'm thinking about doing a 60 day program instead, or using the…
  • Less than Kris are you talking about kilos or lbs for the weights? My boyfriend has a weights system where you just take the pins in and out and the weights are on a block but and I think they go from 10lb right up to 50lbs in increments of 0.5. I can use those but I'd have to go to the gym to use them and it's not always…
  • Mkakids, my TDEE is also 1500, but that's my TDEE without exercise added on top as I'm very sedentary. If you go to the 5:2 group, there's a post asking what someone's TDEE is and one of the other members has added a really useful calculator to work out what you should eat on non-fast days depending on your weight loss…
  • April I am a little bit worried about that happening, especially as some days I go out for unplanned lunches but I am going to try and get my fast days out the way by Wednesday or Thursday so I don't have to worry about them after that. I would prefer to do Monday and Wednesday ideally but Monday nights I now have a…
  • Hi Katherine, sorry to hear that. I think it probably depends how you go about it and also what you eat and when you eat on fast days. I've done juice or liquid fasts before and I've tried to 'detox' by cutting out caffeine too. I found that I had terrible migraines for days while doing that, but with 5:2 I don't get those…
  • By the way where are you all from? I noticed Jo that you're probably somewhere in the UK from the entries in your diary today! I'm from London but now live in Spain. I think most people doing 5:2 are UK based as not sure it's really caught on much elsewhere yet.
  • James have you seen the Michael Moseley BBC Horizon programme? It should help answer some questions. There is also a book available, I got mine in digital form for my Kindle App and don't think it was very expensive. There's also a 5:2 fast group on MFP so that might be worth joining if you have any questions about it too.…
  • I usually wear a watch so I didn't want anything else anyway. I have a G shock for every day wear and 'going out' watch for evenings! I also didn't want to have to always have my Fitbit visible as there are some people I don't talk to about diet or fitness related things and if it's hidden it eliminates the need for a…
  • SingRunTing I agree to a certain extent. No activity monitor can be 100% accurate but it would frustrate me if my fitbit picked up on arm movement rather than actual steps. I deliberately bought a Fitbit One rather than one of the wrist based monitors for that reason as I'd read a couple of articles saying exactly what the…
  • I completely agree with what others have said. When I started on 5th January on MFP I was fed up with hating the way I looked and though some days I was motivated to exercise and think about what I was eating it just wasn't consistent enough. That in addition to not really having any idea how much I was eating meant that…
  • Thanks all for the advice about when to weigh. I think I might do as flumi suggested and pick Saturday, or even Sunday as that will give me 1-2 normal days after my 2 fast days each week. I know that by Monday my weight will be at my highest and that might just depress me! I've made it past lunchtime on my 2nd fast day…
  • Just to add, I've only just started 5:2 and up until now I've lost 7lbs since January 5th by calorie counting and exercising daily (Jillian Michaels Body Revolution plus some walking and gym based cardio). It's been really hard to lose that weight, but I've averaged around 1450 calories per day in total. I'm pretty similar…
  • I was thinking about when would be the best time to weigh. I generally weigh myself daily and have been recording the results in an App (Happy scale) which maps the trends so maybe I should keep doing that, I don't know. My boyfriend said he prefers to weigh on a Monday morning so it's the start of a new week but I really…
  • Hi Wendi I'll definitely add you, and Jools too if you don't mind. I haven't found any other friends so far doing 5:2 so it will be good to compare diaries as you said. My mum did it for around a year a year or so ago but when she stopped she also gained back the weight. I am definitely going to try and stick with it until…
  • Hi Jools, thanks for your reply. I think we're twins! I've seen both docs, the one about exercise was really interesting too. I do HIIT but via Jillian Michaels DVD Body Revolution. The workouts are around 30-40 minutes maximum including warm up and cooldown so not too long. I also walk and do a little extra cardio in the…
  • The only way you can do that would be to set your goals manually to 450 and then work on doing a ton of exercise to be able to eat a reasonable amount of food (ie. burn off 800-1000 calories in exercise in order to eat 1250-1450 worth of calories). This isn't realistic and you would end up severely lacking in energy. I,…
  • Don't worry, it's a standard answer you'll get from some people on MFP. Everyone is different and has different calorie needs. I found the same thing was happening to me a while ago when I was exercising for longer, I actually stopped losing weight. Now I try to keep my workouts to around an hour or sometimes 40-45 mins…
  • willlift4tats I know all about how 5:2 works. I've got the books and watched the doc several times over. How do you know I'm not eating at maintenance? My sedentary TDEE is 1500 so I'm basically eating at that level without eating exercise calories back on my non fast days. Plus what tends to happen is you don't feel as…
  • Well I am going to be fasting for 2 days every week from now on, and doing cardio on those days too. This is normal for people following the 5:2 diet. Doctors and scientists have studied this and shown that it is healthy and effective and a great way to lose weight, body fat and improve many other aspects of your health.
  • I set MFP for the amount I can eat to still be able to lose 1lb per week without any exercise. For me that's my sedentary TDEE of 1500-500 = 1000 calories. That way if there are calories added on to that amount based on my exercise I know I can eat this extra amount and still lose, but generally, whatever the total says…
  • Sorry francl27 but the idea of net calories doesn't exist outside of MFP. 1370 isn't that low, if the OP is burning a lot through exercise maybe she could eat a little more but it's not unhealthy and I've never heard a doctor tell someone eating over 1200 calories and exercising that it's dangerous to their health. So…
  • My body seems to be like that too. I basically lose a pound and then the scales will go up again a couple of days or so later and stay there for another 7-10 days and then I'll lose another pound or more below the last loss so the trend is generally going down, but unless you weigh daily and log the trend it feels like…
  • I suppose there are two reasons I want to do 5:2 and the health benefits is definitely one of them. I suppose I'm approaching it a bit different to others though ie. wanting to lose a significant amount of weight too, by increasing my calorie deficit from what it was already ie. enough to lose 1lb per week to enough to…
