  • When purchasing ready-to-eat foods, look for the word UNSATURATED. That means this fat is a liquid at room temperature (think olive oil, peanut oil, nuts, avocados, etc). It is naturally occurring. If you cook foods for yourself from scratch it is extremely likely you will be using this type of fat. It is easily digested…

  • Oh yummm. With a teeny sprinkle of salt between bites.
  • If you have yellow teeth, buy some of those whitening strips that you have to wear for half an hour. Put 'em in after dinner when you're feeling the munchies creep up, and by the time they're ready to come out, the feeling may have passed. Or, brush your teeth if you KNOW you're not actually hungry. Then eating immediately…
  • Sautee them for a short time in a very hot pan (2-3 minutes max). Squeeze a quarter of a lemon over them, salt and pepper. Wait until the skin just starts to blister on the stems, then they're done! No oil or sauce required!!!
  • johncinarch is right, just cook quinoa the same as you would cook rice. It takes less time, but the ratio of grain:water is the same. Remember to rinse the quinoa once or twice before cooking though, as it has the tendency to come with some grit. The coating on the seed will make the water you rinse it with turn a bit…

  • 1 cup of kale sauteed with some garlic, a handful of brussels sprouts, 1/2 cup sauerkraut, drizzled with soy sauce and a teeny bit of olive oil. Comes out to almost 100 calories exactly for a nice big plate of food. Yummmmm.
  • potatoes: any kind. Chips, fries, hashbrowns. beer, too.
  • :flowerforyou: Hi! I'm a vegan. Used to work at a raw food/vegan restaurant, as well. My favourite dish was a raw sushi we made (pecan pate, crunchy dehydrated carrots and sweet potatoes, cilantro, and raw nori... yum).
  • :drinker: Here here! There are tons of vegetarian sources of protein besides eggs!! My lunch scored a 21 on MFP (what unit of measurement, I don't know) with tofu, rice, tamari and broccoli all scoring high. Yummm.
  • I have a weird bacon substitute (since I'm a vegan): thinly sliced, crispy eggplant. It can be crumbled up on a caesar salad, put on a BLT, or enjoyed as a side. Four 1-ounce slices of fried, seasoned eggplant "bacon" is about 87 calories, 0 mg cholesterol, with 20 mg potassium! Just my 2cents :glasses:
  • It seems like the trainer is underestimating you? From what I gather on the forums here, it's in line to expect to lose about a pound a week, with hard work and proper nutrition. That gives you 12 pounds in 3 months, or nearly 5.5 kilos, on your own. By that logic, you could shed 52 pounds in 12 months (52 weeks), ie 23.5…
  • Another awesome substitute is 2 tbsp ground flax seed and 6 tbsp water mixed together: that replaces 1 egg in baked recipes. Works wonders, I promise! (and with all the health benefits of flax to boot!)
  • Gotta have olives and hot peppers on the pizza...... droool
  • I have a great recipe for a vegan quiche. Tastes amazing- very savoury. The version listed here serves 8, with 188 calories per serving (16 carbs, 10 fat, 8 protein). Ingredients: 1 tenderflake deep dish pie shell 1 block firm tofu (drain well), crumbled 1 tsp olive oil 1/2 tbsp tahini (sesami paste) 1/2 leek (white…
  • And to respond specifically to your questions: If you're having trouble with the transition, just get excited about foods that aren't animal based. The sheer variety of plant-based foods in this world is amazing. Read some good vegetarian/vegan food blogs for ideas. Some of my favourites include:…
  • Vegan! Four years and counting. My partner is a vegetarian (we live together). I love how delicious and healthy well-prepared vegan food is. My favourite food is chopped avocado on whole grain flax bread with olive oil and balsamic drizzled on top. Add some shredded fresh basil on top... MMMMM
  • Bleh. The only frozen "meals" I sometimes eat are waffles.
  • Oh my god, what didn't I eat?!!!! We had about 15 people over, so there was lots to go around. My plate had: roasted sweet potato and carrots with maple syrup and ginger, vegan quiche, mashed potatoes, corn, green olives with pimentos, broccoli salad with raisins and almonds, potato chips, peanuts, and about 6 glasses of…
  • I'd serve some variation of a tomato salad (with parsley and basil, cucumbers, lemon juice, olive oil, maybe a bit of cheese if that's your style). Something with a little acid in it to cut through the heaviness of the goulash. I know it's not in season, but stone fruit for dessert: peaches, plums.
  • You look excellent. What resolve!! Congratulations, and keep it up!
  • I guess I should have specified also that I live in Toronto, Canada. All of the products I've listed above are available to me at my local health food store and a couple of good brands are at the chain grocery store, too. I'm not sure about availability where you live, but I'm sure with a bit of trial and error you could…
  • Hi Smedlund! If you're looking for a dairy-free cheese, I would highly suggest reading all the ingredients carefully before purchasing any substitute products. Many "vegetarian" rice or soy cheeses include casein (a milk protein), lactose, or whey. Don't ask me why! As a vegan of four years and counting, I have always…

  • Hummus is delicious, very healthy, and quite cheap (even cheaper if you have a food processor and feel like making it yourself). It's super high in protein. Spread it on wraps and roll with veggies like spinach, peppers, grated carrots, basil, kale, cabbage, tomato slices, mushrooms,... anything! Hummus can also be used as…
  • I'm with the general consensus here: 13 pounds in less than a month is a tremendous achievement. DO NOT STOP! Continue making healthy eating choices and remember the positive feeling that exercise gives you. You can do it!
  • You look brilliant! Way to go.
  • ow ow! Sexy mama! Congratulations on all of your hard work. It shows :)
  • I completely agree. Soda is awful for you! Don't drink it any more. Don't buy it. Have a conversation with your husband. If he buys it when he's out by himself, that's his issue. But if he brings some home, you should throw it in the garbage before it even makes it to the fridge. DON'T even tempt yourself!!! (And this way…
  • Hi! Congrats on the switch- it's easier than you would think. I've been a vegan for 4 years now and I often visit the following blogs for inspiration when I feel like my cooking has hit a roadblock: http://vegandad.blogspot.com/ http://taleoftwovegans.wordpress.com/ http://www.tastespotting.com/search/vegan/1 Mind you, not…
