I usually don't bother with a food scale for meat that I cook. I just take the weight on the package and then divide by the number of portions I cut it into. Sure I may not cut it perfectly even but how accurate is a home food scale anyway?

This. A lot of cereals are so light and airy that you'll probably be hungry again 10 minutes after eating a bowl. The processing they go through strips most of the macro and micro nutrients out of the grain and so the manufacturers cleverly add back the ones that make the side panel look impressive - along with a lot of…

I don't know why this motivates me but it does.

Very fond of Balega socks for running. I'm not in Australia but I would imagine they'd prevent blisters down under as well as anywhere else :) Seriosuly though, I'd stay away from anything cotton. You want synthetic.

Get fit at the gym. Lose weight in the kitchen.

True, but it makes your weight go all wacky with water retention, making it hard to track your progress.

Yup. All that's needed to burn fat is a calorie deficit. The entire reason your body stores fat in the first place is to provide you energy to sustain your life in times of lower caloric intake. The advantage of a keto diet is that for many people, it acts as a hunger suppressant. That's good, however for myself I didn't…

Methinks the jury is still out. There are just as many studies today still saying to avoid saturated fat but the media tends to latch on to the ones that say they're OK because, frankly, there's no story in saying otherwise. And waddayaknow, Nina Teicholz, the author of the above article, just happens to have recently…

Agree with this 100%. Exercise is like brushing your teeth, mowing the lawn, taking out the trash and folding the laundry. It needs to get done. Period. If you can crank some tunes, watch TV or listen to a podcast or find some other way to make it less monotonous, go right ahead, but make no mistake, you still should do it…

Just because you have changed your lifestyle does not give you the right to demand that the people in your household do the same. The best way to get your spouse on board with your new way of living is to demonstrate its positive aspects, not lecture and nag about how unhealthy they are currently being. Trust me. They…

At the very least, you should have to enter your weight into the machine for it to have any hope of being accurate. A 300 lb person is going to burn a lot more calories doing the same workout on a machine as a 150 lb person. If you're logging and tracking, MFP already knows your weight. Conventional wisdom around here says…

So you only want to hear opinions if they match yours? Try talking into a tape recorder and playing it back.

To add fuel to the fire, the study everyone loves to quote that says saturated fat is A-OK has itself been called out for being faulty and incomplete. Several new studies released just this year suggest that the link between saturated fat and heart disease still exists. After reviewing all the data currently available, the…

What happens on day 22?

This confirms it: I'm never going to try to eat paleo.

Cooking sprays are not really zero calories. They are taking advantage of a loophole in how calories for a serving size are calculated. First off, they are pretty much 100% oil, i.e. fat, and an entire can is somewhere between 350 and 500 calories, depending on the size of the can. They get away with the zero calories…

So I also have to bookmark threads I post in, or else have no way of easily finding the discussions I've taken part in earlier in the day? Yeah, not so good of a change.

Just another note: Cardio really IS strength training afterall. The heart is a muscle and you strengthen it via cardio exercises. Unlike other muscles, however, you can train this one every day.
-
You really want to do both, however cardio is not just for weight loss. The main reason to do cardio is for cardio vascular health. Heart disease is still the #1 killer in America, more than all types of cancer combined, so a regular cardio routine should be part of everyone's exercise regimen. The American Heart…

40 mg per 12 oz can is hardly "a lot of sodium".
-
A 12 oz can of Diet Coke has all of 40 mg of sodium. Diet Pepsi and Diet 7-Up are about the same. If you drank ten cans a day, you'd get about as much sodium as eating one bagel.
-
No, we say because it's truism about weight loss. If you eat a bad diet, you can't out train it. Don't read more into it than that. By definition, you don't need to out train a good diet. That really only works if you eat the same things every day. The problem with monotonous diets is that people don't tend to stick them.…

Yup. Did Atkins for a year. Lost quite a bit of weight and yes, it really does curb your appetite. But it really is a very restrictive diet. Say goodbye to 80% of everything at the grocery store and 95% of everything on a restaurant menu. Eating out or at a friend's house was always awkward. Frankly, I just love all kinds…

I've lost weight with both, but I gained it all back and then some after a year of low carb. Been maintaining for 2 years now by watching calories instead of carbs. My personal experience is that low carb dieting is great for weight loss but does not prepare you to handle maintenance. The constant allure of forbidden fruit…

I try not to think about whether exercise is fun or not. It's like brushing your teeth, washing the dishes, doing yard work or house cleaning. It's something you should just do and make a habit out of. Sure, find something you can do and listen to music or whatever but don't fall into the trap of it having to be fun so…

True, but when I take an honest look at what made me overweight, it had more to do with bad eating habits than sugary foods: second helpings at dinner, fast food too often when out and about, too many take out meals (mostly Chinese and pizza), and in general finding any excuse to go to a restaurant. Bottom line: too many…

We all have times where we feel bloated and chubby. A lot of it is mental. What works for me when I'm felling that way is exercise. It's pretty much impossible to feel fat after you've just run 4 miles. What else can you do to boost your mood so completely - and in such a short time too?
-
The American Heart Association and Center for Disease Control recommends 150 minutes of moderate cardio exercise per week to maintain good heart health. It doesn't matter if you do it in several small 10 minute chunks or a few longer workouts. Heart disease kills more people in the US than all forms of cancer combined.…
