Welcome, mdressage, you'll be back in the swing of it in no time!!!!

Great work, Noel & Bama!!!! Felt really good in the water today, but I stuck to the plan & did all freestyle again - I will work on the I.M.'s again in a few weeks when I'm back for good. It was, however, VERY tempting to try them today... - Today was yet again 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 in 114 minutes....

The pacing is directly related to how fast you want to go. That said, it will be affected by the length of your pull. I'm always a firm believer in using the longest pull possible. If you're competing, the breast stroke pull can't go past the hip line but there's no reason it can't go that far. I watch so many people…

Noel - you hit it exactly, any work is better than none & there are benefits derived from every workout, both good & bad. At the very least, you're getting some work for the muscles & getting the heart rate up. Sometimes a "bad" workout can be good, it creates something for you to compare a good workout to & it teaches you…

The cadence for breast stroke is "Kick, Glide, Pull". Use the kick to propel you forward as your arms are recovering up along your body & shooting out in front of you for the next stroke. As the arms shoot out is where the glide comes in, then the pull. That cadence works no matter what pace you set for yourself, quicken…

Juliet - you just got the biggest point with the flip turn, dropping the chin straight down to the chest without turning the head. One thing that will help is to keep the thought that you don't want to take a breath within at least the last 2 strokes into the turn so that you're not turning in that span. The other big key…

LOL, just goes to show even the "experts" don't necessarily agree thus proving to me yet again that there is no single method - each swimmer needs to find the best way for them....
-
AQ, it's probably about time your body had a little rest anyway. Feel better & get all rested up..... Bruce, you keep blowing those personal records away!!!!! Welcome back to the water, Ronnie!!!!

gently - great work, although you missed the variety you did a nice job getting the distance in. You can always occupy your mind with working on a particular aspect, or get a waterproof iPod & listen to the music. Sibling rivalry is always a good motivation, lol... Juliet - the pool at my gym doesn't designate, so there…

Wow, Folks, some great swimming going on here - great job!!!!!

Relate it to walking - when you're picking up the pace you aren't rotating at the waist. Your upper body rotates some as you pump your arms (similar to the forward & back, elliptical shape of the freestyle stroke - although not overhead like the stroke) but by the time the rotation gets to your waist it has pretty much…

Differing school here - I'm from the school where the roll shouldn't translate all the way down through the hips & legs. Too much rotation throws your energy out to then sides instead of it focusing on forward progress. It also leads to an imbalance in the stroke, you can usually see it by watching someone who is rotating…

Phase 1 of the big job that's kept me out of the pool is wrapping up a week early, so I can get back in & shake some rust off next week. Unfortunately, I'll probably miss the 2 weeks after that, but then I should hopefully be back in pretty much every day. I can't wait, I've missed it & I'm feeling the effects from not…

I'm betting that your kicking fast & furious without much distance gained to show for it - think more about generating power from the hips, making the kick strong instead of concentrating on how fast you can get your legs moving. A fast kick is effective for sprints, once you learn to generate that power but that's a…

newoutlook, at 51 years old & as a lifelong swimmer I can tell you that the people at the pool are concentrating on their own workout. Some are concentrating on their technique, some on their speed & the vast majority n just getting through their workout. Jump in, do whatever kind of workout suits you & (most importantly)…

Great job, everybody!!!!

Welcome to the group, Amby, you'll find a lot of really nice people here who love swimming.....
-
Curly - sticking with it on those days is a BIG victory. As you've seen, the more you relax the better you will swim. Although you want to pay attention to technique, particularly when you're working on something in particular, don't let it weigh on you so heavily that you're stressed about it or making yourself tense.…

Noel, I'm sure they see your excitement too - it's obvious that they support you :-) All freestyle today: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 Happy New Year to all my swimming MFPals, may 2015 bring you all the happiness, success & health you seek....

Great swim, Juliet!!!! No swim today, bad stomach last night & I didn't want to risk any issues in the water. Disappointing, because this week is my last week in the water until after the 1st or 2nd week in February. The good news is that I found out I can swim Friday morning because we are starting work later than…

All freestyle: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards....
-
Curly - you are doing so great!!!! The legs were sore because you gave the right muscles a good workout for the first time, you'll break through that pretty quick & you'll feel the strength in your legs pretty quickly (including when you're walking uphill, up or down stairs, using your legs to help lift something, etc.).…

Glad to hear you're back in, Clive, that's great news. I just found out that, not only did those work days that got pushed off get scheduled in January, but we picked up a new client so January is out for me & probably the 1st week or so in February too.....
-
Merry Christmas to all of my swimming friends here, thank you all for the support & motivation.... Curly - that's great news, a BIG breakthrough. You are becoming more aware of the proper feel, & now you're discovering that you are able to find it more & more. Pretty soon it will be completely natural, & you won't have to…
-
Gently - I've definitely not been sleeping as well while away from the pool, & it'll probably be at some point in February before I'm back in every day......
-
Great work, everybody!!!!! Juliet - to me, warm water DEFINITELY makes me slower. It lulls me & makes me logey in the water. Cooler water keeps me more alert & seems to make my body push harder to generate more heat.... Noel - I've never really tried to concentrate on modifying my kick, per se, but in my longer swims I…

Oh, no, Bama, you're not alone - you're describing my mornings to a "T"......
-
I think it's VERY relative to swimming, the form of movement is different but we also have relays & it's so cool watching somebody make up all that ground (or water).....
-
Since I do all flip turns when I'm swimming freestyle, it's very rare I see anybody waiting while I'm in the middle of a set - hence my asking the lifeguards to just let them know to put their feet in the water, once I see them I move to the side & then they can start swimming. While I don't want to see anybody waiting…

I don't know that it's 1 culture vs. another - I think it's just a case of 1 or 2 people with the wrong attitude showing up.....
