  • LOTS of great swimming, Folks - fantastic!!!! I've missed reading these posts the past few days, it's good to be back here. I've been getting some swimming in & a LOT of walking. The good news - since the lifeguard who does swim lessons can't do them in the scheduled time slot, the Board of the community approved giving…
  • Like Gutzy, I think it's got to be hydrodynamics due to body shape. Although I've lost a good amount of weight, I'm still a big guy - especially through the upper body (shoulders, chest). I'm not a sprinter & never have been, even when I competed through high school - I did much better in the longer events (200 & 500 free)…
  • If you search "Impossible Weight Loss", of course you're gonna find articles that support that view. How about searching "Successful Weight Loss" & reading those articles? Unless you're looking for reasons to not undertake the journey there's no reason to buy into that. If you really DO believe that it's impossible, how…
  • Don't use the paddles until you get clearance from the doctor - they will put a lot more torque on the shoulders. When you get checked they very well may give you some exercises to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder, which will help stabilize the joints & cut down on the pain - but get checked before trying…

  • That has to be a great ab workout.....
  • earlnabby, check the position of the switch on it - in the middle is playing straight through, to 1 side is off & to the other is shuffle
  • Great job, congratulations!!!!! As for what to do - let your body be your guide, it'll let you know when you've done too much & you've been at it long enough now to know when you're getting good work in....

  • Small bowl of Cheerios before I go, whole wheat toast with peanut butter when I get back....
  • WOW - great distance, Gutzy!!!! 1st day in the shorter pool (19 yards, so my distances are screwy), due to them getting set up late because the weather was off only got 30 minutes of actual swim time (about 40 minutes in the water): 190 free, 380 free, 6 x 152 I.M., 380 free.... Unfortunately I'm going to lose Thursday &…
  • Good news Rob, & great job keeping the long term view in mind. It's very tough to resist the temptation when you're feeling good....

  • Welcome to the group, Laura - you're definitely in the right place!!! Plenty of helpful folk here with vast & varied experiences, so somebody should be able to answer any questions you might have. You are definitely moving in the right direction, getting in the water consistently is the first step. As you delve more into…
  • Welcome home, Gutzy - hopefully no more swimless trips.... Nice work, Folks - lots of great stuff posted!!!! Back in today after no swimming last week, all freestyle workout: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards. Took a little time to shake the rust off, but not as much as I expected. In summer mode now, so…
  • Good news, Bruce - welcome back!!!!
  • Great job, everybody & congrats Kida!!!! No swims this week, IV treatment week but I should get some walking in now that I'm in Pennsylvania for the summer.....
  • Good news, Rob, & I'm glad you're getting back to it reasonably so that you don't make the elbow any worse....
  • Good luck, Kida - I know you're gonna do great!!!!!
  • All freestyle today: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards in 114 minutes.... Last day at my regular pool until after Labor Day, the plan right now is to do 2 days at our community pool (19 yards, so you'll see some very odd distances logged on those days) & 2 days at a different branch of my gym. Not exactly…
  • Welcome to the group, soldiergrl - this is a great group, lots of fantastic people with tons of good information. Glad to have you here, hope you enjoy it as much as we do..... I also swim with music, I'm usually in the water between 2 1/4 & 2 1/2 hours so the music definitely helps....

  • Didn't swim today, had a long & busy day yesterday - didn't get to bed until 1am or so & wasn't getting up at 4:15 to swim, so I guess it's an easy day today.....
  • Today's workout: 250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 8 x 200 I.M., 500 free, 2 x 200 I.M., 1000 free, 250 free in 98 minutes. Slowly getting that 500 free in the middle of the I.M.'s pushed back with the ultimate goal of being able to do 10 200 I.M.'s in a row. Don't know if it'll happen by the end of the summer, next week I'll…
  • Welcome to the group, Planet!!!!!
  • That's good news, Rob!!!! Swimmers tend to have shoulder issues because the shoulders are the most unstable large joints in the body & we put a lot of torque on them. I would bet the exercises you get for the shoulder will be designed to strengthen the muscles in & around the joint to help stabilize it.... Nice work,…
  • I got a decent pull buoy off of eBay for a good price a few years ago, try there also..... Taking the extra couple of days off was exactly what the doctor ordered, usually when I do that I can feel the layoff but I was nice & strong today. All freestyle: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards in 114 minutes......
  • Swimming with a closed fist is going to be slower because you're not getting that extra pull from the upped hand. It's designed to help you learn to get resistance along the length of the arm, which will help create a more powerful pull in conjunction with the cupped hand. Don't compare your speed doing it with your…
  • Fantastic, Noel - I'm so glad you enjoyed it
  • You're gonna do a great job, Noel - luck will have nothing to do with it. I would not be shocked to seeyo comeon here & be surprised at how well you did....
  • Thanks, guys - I took it easy after I got home & spent the afternoon taking care of the lawn. I'll head into bed at a decent hour & sleep a little later. I was up in the air about whether I was gonna swim tomorrow, then fate intervened & made my decision for me. Pennsylvania passed recent legislation requiring any adults…
  • Welcome aboard, Teressa, & welcome back to the pool!!!!
