  • About 4 years ago my wife asked me if I wanted a waterproofed iPod & I told her no, figuring it would be too distracting - I had enough trouble keeping track of my yardage & didn't want to make it more difficult. She got me 1 for Christmas anyway, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Lo & behold, I found my mind actually…
  • Kinda sorta swam today. Got up this morning feeling tired but went to the gym anyway. Started out OK, but as I swam I just felt more & more wiped out. You know when you're so physically tired that it almost feels like your body is humming or vibrating? That's the point it got to, so I decided it was smarter to knock off. I…
  • Great swimming (as always), Folks!!!! All freestyle today & felt pretty strong for the 2nd day in a row: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards....
  • I would be guided by what the doctor says, he's the medical expert. He's going to re-evaluate you in 6 weeks, if surgery becomes an option then I don't see it interfering with your long range plans & which season is more important. See if you can do any research on how long it might hold up before you need the surgery, if…
  • I find my mind wanders less with my music on because it's staying somewhat focused on what I'm listening to. That makes it easier for me to count. I also personally find it easier to count by yardage instead of # of lengths.... I.M.'s actually felt pretty strong today: 250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 7 x 200 I.M., 500 free,…
  • You'll be back soon, Gutzy, & you won't have to worry about blisters from swimming....
  • Fantastic, Noel & mpeters!!!!! All free today: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards in 114 minutes.....
  • Find out the recovery time, it might be worth it in the long run if it gives you the relief you need to take a break now. I had both my hips done at age 36, it was the best thing I ever did & I'm so glad I didn't wait longer.....
  • If it ends up not being chlorine, see if you can find out what other chemicals they're using & what guidelines they use for balancing the water (pH, etc.). Hope it's just an oddball occurrence & clears up quickly with no long term issues.....
  • Stephen - GREAT job, congrats on the PB & the sprinting. As you feel stronger sprinting you can add more from the back end so that you don't burn yourself out. Do the last length & a half of each set, then the last 2 lengths, etc. Juliet - golfing is actually a really good burn, especially walking. I use a pull cart when I…
  • I.M. workout today, little bit of a tough go through the fly on the last few I.M.'s: 250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 7 x 200 I.M., 500 free, 3 x 200 I.M., 1000 free, 250 free in 98 minutes.....
  • Bruce, I'm sorry to hear that diagnosis - I know how much swimming means to you. I'm sure you will find your way to another passion, & you'll be hitting that as hard as you did the swimming.....
  • Sorry I missed this thread - Juliet's exercise is probably the best way to do breast pull sets. The whole body is so involved in the stroke during breast, so it's really difficult to try to isolate just the kick. Juliet's exercise allows you to use the body to extend, yet only kick for propulsion. Trying to do the kick…
  • Stephen - if you're feeling the need for a rest day, then listen to your body & take 1. One day will not derail anything you've done, or will it set you back - but it COULD help your body recover & repair muscle properly. As a trainer at my gym once told me about rest days our bodies will tell us when we need 1 & if we…
  • Great work getting the swim in despite the obstacles, Juliet.... All freestyle today (in yards): 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 in 114 minutes....
  • Welcome to the group, Lindsey - you're in the right group. There's plenty of good info to be found here from a lot of good people.......
  • 250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 7 x 200 I.M., 500 free, 3 x 200 I.M., 1000 free, 250 free in 98 minutes
  • If you break your workout up into some sets instead of swimming straight through you can push yourself a bit harder, including sprinting the last length of each set, because you can get a little rest before starting the next set. As you get stronger, you can make the sprint the last length & a half, hen the last 2, etc.…
  • Back in after a week & a half, felt rusty but not as rusty as I expected. My reach was a little short, but I started to feel it getting better by the end of the workout so hopefully it'll be there tomorrow. All freestyle today: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards in 114 minutes.......
  • Great job folks, I'm gone for only a few days & there were 38 new posts!!!! I'm back to it tomorrow - weather permitting. We have thunderstorms going on now & they're supposed to continue through the morning - they won't let us swim even though it's indoors. I can't blame them, safety has to come first, but I don't have to…
  • Sorry for the delayed response, just got back from a long weekend away. Here you go: This is the written workout: http://www.usaswimming.org/ViewMiscArticle.aspx?Tabid=1645&mid=702&ItemId=700 These are videos of the workouts in the printed form:…
  • Ms_J1 is exactly right, particularly on the "Slightly" part. You want to find that point where the rotation helps your length without throwing your energy out to the sides. Your thought should always be driving forward, that will help get the right amount of rotation....
  • Have a safe trip. You know when you get back that it won't take long to shake the rust off & pick up where you're leaving off....
  • A friend of mine who is really into golf talks about Tiger Woods saying there's a big difference between "Feel" & "Real" - that it's usually surprising to see how different what you're really doing is from what you think you're doing & that video is the best tool to show that difference. Toward the end of last summer we…
  • LOL - in between reaching too far & not reaching far enough.....
  • I'm wondering if maybe you were reaching so far out that you were hyperextending the elbow - maybe it's a matter of finding that sweet spot in between......
  • Ms. J - from where I sit I think you're doing great, but to be honest I'd be deferring to you were I looking to do more than coach a summer rec team for kids. You have obviously really taken a lot from the training you took to coach, & that coupled with your experience as a swimmer is a great combination which makes you a…
  • Juliet - great work, way to push yourself!!! Rob - hope the stretching helps.... All freestyle workout today - 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards in 114 minutes. I'll be out all next week, treatments Monday through Thursday & then I'm leaving Thursday afternoon for the Mountain Jam Music Festival, I'll be…
  • I agree with Juliet, your form is good. Any adjustments would be in the form of minor tweaks. Juliet is right about you arms being bent when they enter the water, it's similar to what both of my kids do - the hand/arm is coming down into the water (in both of my kids its more pronounced - they tend to "slap" the water)…
  • Rob, I saw this on your feed & responded there. You'll figure ways to adapt your stroke & you'll stay well aware of any sign of it acting up. Not only are you doing the right thing by yourself, you're setting a good example to other people here about how to get on top of these things - thanks for that......
