I have been flirting with a 60 minute mile for a while now (I swim breast stroke only because of shoulder issues). I have been averaging 64 minute miles and have gotten down to 62 minutes several times. Monday I finally did it! I even had a new best time on Wed. when I got a 58 minute mile! What do I do? I have now added another quarter mile to my swim. Yesterday I did the one and a quarter in 77 minutes.

    Have you ever tried the kick fins that are specifically designed for breast stroke? That can increase the effort at your legs and round out the workout more.
    Re: shoulder issues, it is something that can be helped with stretching? I have degenerative osteoarthritis in my left shoulder. Used to have more limit range of motion and pain. But worked with an ortho and got some great stretches that have increased ROM and no more pain. And no more cortisone shots either.
    I can't do the back stroke due to ROM. But I can free style for hours (and I do).

    muy excellente! ...breast stroke is in my rotation with others, but i'm gonna do my first timed/counted continuous swim using just that stroke next week.

    I've never heard of these breast stroke fins, Gutzy. I'll have to look them up. My breast stroke is hideous.

    Great job, congratulations!!!!! As for what to do - let your body be your guide, it'll let you know when you've done too much & you've been at it long enough now to know when you're getting good work in....

    Thanks everyone. Yesterday I was able to drop two more minutes from my time so I did the mile and a quarter in 75 minutes. Time and schedule wise, I think 75 minutes is it for me so I will now be working to get faster so I can get more laps in instead of getting a shorter time.

    I go straight from the laps into a water aerobics class. Often I had as much as 25 minutes between so I jogged in place in the warm pool to keep my muscles warm before class. I like the extra 15 minutes of swimming much better. I still have a few minutes to stretch my back and neck between workouts.

    I haven't tried them. I have been considering trying the hand paddles to give my arms a bit more of a workout.

    As far as the shoulder/arm thing. Stretches don't help (at least not the ones I know to do). This has been going on for about a year and I am thinking I may ask my doctor for a referral to a PT. There is a dull ache in the shoulder and a pain that ranges from nothing to a sharp achiness in the bicep. I have lost some range of motion, hence the difficulty with both the forward and backward crawl, and the bicep hurts when I try the elementary backstroke.

    LOL, my water aerobics instructor also teaches swimming lessons to kids in the warm pool. I listen in and it is so cute. She teaches the elementary backstroke by "little bird" (bring your hands up your side, keeping elbows bent), "big bird" (straighten them out to the side). "fly away" (bring them back to your side still straight, propelling you forward). It is just too cute and is now an earworm anytime I try the stoke.

    Don't use the paddles until you get clearance from the doctor - they will put a lot more torque on the shoulders. When you get checked they very well may give you some exercises to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder, which will help stabilize the joints & cut down on the pain - but get checked before trying anything like that so you don't create a bigger injury......

    When I was experiencing a lot of shoulder pain from swimming, the thing that worked wonders for me was finding my "shoulder bear"--a teddy bear the perfect size for propping up my shoulder while sleeping. It helped tremendously in the pool!
