That'll pass, & as you do more it will happen less & less. If need be, back it down a little bit the next time & build it back up, you don't want to be so sore that you can't swim consistently. It's a marathon, not a sprint.........

For us old-time swimmers laps & lengths are the same thing. When all the track people got too old & too many injuries in their legs to keep running, they migrated to the pool where they decided that a lap meant getting back to the same place you started, as opposed to traversing the course 1 time (for those running in…

It may not seem like much to you, but I think it is - you're in the water swimming!!!! Stick with it & keep trying to push yourself as much as possible :-)

250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 5 x 200 IM, 400 free, 1 x 200 IM, 4 x 100 IM, 1000 free, 500 free, 250 free..... I've decided to see if I can start pushing myself a little more with the other strokes. As I feel stronger, I'm going to start dropping 100 yards off the freestyle set in between the 2 sections of IM's & each…

Fantastic, Bruce!!!

No swim today, my wife asked me to stay home to get the kids launched to school. I did get out & walk, & I'll be back at the pool tomorrow.......

I don't know if it was a misunderstanding on my part, but that's not the way this thread read to me - it looked like you ordered the ribs AFTER your food got fed to the dog. If you originally placed the order for ribs before and unrelated to your food getting fed to the dog, then 1 thing has nothing to do with the other.…

^This. I would even say that you don't necessarily have to go get your own place, but you most certainly can take responsibility for your own eating & go get yourself something healthy when something like this happens. Whether it was intentional on your sister's part or a legitimate accident, you caved & ordered ribs AND…

More than likely, CW, that'll improve as you get the feel for how far you can push yourself.....

The distance sets are nice for getting stretched out. I love doing them, but then again, I've always been a distance guy - I've never been a good sprinter. Back in the Stone Age, when I swam in school I did the 500 free & the 200 free, sometimes the 100 fly instead of the 200 - but I'd take any of them over a 50 free race…

Just remember that you want the rotation in the shoulders as you shoot your hands out. Your upper body will naturally turn some too, you just don't want that rotation to translate down through the hips & into the legs, it should pretty much stop at the waist. If the rotation goes down though the legs you'll be expending…

Probably because you're blasting a lot of the same muscles. Would distance sets help more, where you can pace yourself a little slower & concentrate more on long, stretching strokes?
-
Fantastic, gently, keep pushing forward!!!!!!
-
CW, you'll adapt quickly, especially once you realize that you can swim that length with no troubles......
-
200 IM is 2 lengths each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke & freestyle, 100 IM is 1 length of each stroke. CW is right. it stands for "Individual Medley" - a race swum by a single swimmer doing all the strokes, as opposed to the medley relay in a meet where 4 swimmers each do one of the strokes......

Big drop in the time, Bruce, nicely done.... yirara - a workout in an 18m pool is better than no workout at all, if you can build time into the schedule you'd be better served by doing as much as you can.... Swam my "other" workout today - 250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 5 x 200 IM, 500 free, 5 x 100 IM, 1000 free, 500…

That is a great article, with a lot of good tips. They're all pretty much what I preach to the kids at practice. The only one of the drills I'm a little leery of is the corkscrew - I understand the theory behind it & it seems to be a sound principle, but my concern is it could lead to over-rotation when breathing if the…

A music player is definitely the way to go, AQ - I LOVE my iPod in the water. When my wife first asked me if I wanted one I kept telling her no because I figured I was having enough trouble keeping track of my yardage due t my mind wandering, I figured the iPod would make it that much more difficult. She got one for me a…

Great work yet again, AQ, Panda & Bruce!!!!!!!!! Back in the pool today for the first time in a week & a half, didn't feel nearly as rusty as I thought I was going to. 6500 yards freestyle in 114 minutes. Tomorrow will be the bigger test when I work on the other strokes.....
-
Great job again, folks!!!! I'm looking forward to getting back in the pool tomorrow morning, my bag is already packed & sitting on the couch.......
-
Great job, everybody!!!!

Awesome, CW - can't wait for next week when I can get back in.........
-
Great job, CW & thanks for allowing me to live vicariously through your swim.......

1. My apologies, I didn't realize that only people officially on a "diet" could respond. I also wasn't "arguing" anything, I was bringing another viewpoint to the conversation. For some people a straight up diet works, for others it doesn't, some people watch/change what they're eating for reasons other than weight loss.…

Enjoy your vacation, Bruce!!!!

Not intentionally as a means to lose weight. The food I'm eating has fewer calories than the fast food/junk food I was eating a lot of, so my calories ARE lower. My goal has been to eat better, & for the most part I have not been going hungry (other than the occasional day where I feel like I must have a tapeworm)......…

On 1 hand that's true, but on the other hand I'm not "restricting" anything - I'm trying to eat healthier foods. The fact that they happen to have less calories & I've lost some weight is fantastic, but overall health is my goal. I'm 50 years old & all the #'s on my bloodwork are now right in the middle of where they need…

Good thought, CW, your body needs rest..... No swimming this week :-(
-
No diet e either - every time I try that I fail because I start to immediately crave whatever it is I tell myself I can't have, & when I fall off that wagon I fall off BIG time. I started exercising (loads of swimming) & lost 24 lbs., then I discovered MFP & lost another 44 after learning a bit more about what I'm eating.…

What a great NSV!!!! Great job, you'll find that your distance will start to grow quickly - it won't be 1 length at a time. It may be 1 length added, then 1 1/2, then 3, then 5 1/2, etc. You'll find that, like most physical endeavors, the more you do the quicker the improvements will come. Please keep us all posted on the…
