  • Those classes definitely affect swim times. Next time the 2nd class takes over the lane you're using before they're due to start tell the lifeguard. If the lifeguard doesn't do anything go to the facility manager - you're paying to use the pool just like they are, the fact that they're a class doesn't give them the right…
  • I don't think you're crazy at all, I am very impressed at the goal you've set for yourself & I have no doubt you'll be able to do it. You're well aware of the commitment it will take & you're willing to make the time for it. I would say you were crazy if you didn't plan for it. Re-read many times over the posts by Ms_J1&…
  • Mac's views on that suit are very simple - for me? HELL no!!!!! Doesn't look like that guy is the most surreptitious smuggler of a budgie....... As a kid competing in the 70's we never used goggles - some kids started using them the very end of the decade, more so into the beginning of the 80's, but they weren't…

  • My reaction is the same as Kida's - you are doing fantastic. You've been consistently upping your times & you're getting ready to jump it up again. As for distance, of course breast stroke will have an impact on it, but so what? My I.M. workout days are 1,000 yards less than my all freestyle workout days, yet I finish…
  • Great swim, Kida - glad you made it in too......
  • Juliet's right, there are as many different coaching styles as there are personalities. Some are very proactive, some wait to be asked. It's been my experience through quite a few coaches that, no matter their style, the vast majority will happily answer questions when asked & will watch closer when asked to check out a…
  • I.M. workout today: 250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 5 x 200 I.M., 200 free, 3 x 200 I.M., 2 x 100 I.M., 1000 free, 500 free, 250 free in 97 minutes......
  • Curly - nobody wants to see me trying to smuggle any budgies :o Gutzy - I know the Jammer would shave some time, but my focus is n keeping strong as opposed to dropping time. Due to that, I'm actually better off in a drag suit....
  • All freestyle today: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 What I was hoping for came to pass - after a week off I really felt the rust when I swam on Friday. I was hoping that the rust would be gone & I would feel better in the water today, which I did. I felt stronger than Friday & (more importantly) my stroke felt…
  • LOL, gently - best to realize it in the locker room.... My suit is a regular set of trunks - the world is NOT ready for me in Jammers (or, God forbid, a real Speedo).... That said, a number of years ago when my nephew was lifeguarding for the simmer I found a pair of trunks made by Speedo with a big Speedo logo on the leg,…
  • Juliet - smart move, a few days off now to recover prevents a lot more days off after getting sicker.... Stephen - Although it's great to have a streak, time off is necessary too. No reason to feel guilty, it's a good thing for the body to have a chance to rest & let the muscles repair..... Happy Easter!!!!
  • Kida - a few days off isn't necessarily a bad thing, gives your body a few days to rest & repair the muscles.... Stephen - Doesn't matter what somebody else was doing or how fast they were doing it, you're there for you & to get done the things you want to do. When I coach the kids I always tell them that they aren't…
  • Thanks, Curly - when I speak of you guys I mean it as encouragement more so than accountability. I take inspiration from all the posts about people pushing themselves to go further, how their times are dropping, how they're trying new things, how they're concentrating on certain areas & getting tem. I do feel a small sense…
  • The life of my suits tends to vary, so I always make sure I have a few on hand. 1 thing I do that seems to help extend the life of them is to rinse them well in the shower after my swim.....
  • Back in today after a week off, all freestyle: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards..... It's amazing how much rust you can build in just a week, when I left off a week ago I was feeling really good in the water - felt like my form was back & I was feeling nice & strong. Today, it took almost the whole workout…
  • Definitely, it absolutely counts. You're gonna burn a whole hell of a lot between swimming & running around the park......
  • Make sure you get the speed rated one, you don't want to suffer a blowout..... For me I just need my suit, goggles (Speedo Hydrospex) & my waterproof iPod.....

  • Curly - don't be concerned about swimming in a new place. Within a minute you'll be so engrossed in what you're doing that nothing else will matter, & everybody else there is into what they're doing.... Some really great work going on here folks!!!!! I'm really pleased to see rest days being taken when needed & people…
  • Freestyle will also engage the core.....
  • The idea isn't to slow down the swim itself, just get the feel of slowing down the process by not trying to breathe all the way in & all the way out. It sounds like you're actually trying too hard with the breathing, trying to do too much, & maybe creating a panicky feel for yourself because there isn't enough time to do…
  • Thanks for starting this, AQ, I think it's something we'll all benefit from..... Kida - keep in mind butterfly is as much (or more) about core than arms & legs.....
  • Great swimming, everybody!!!!! AQ - those pillars are a great foundation!!!! No swim today, had to work. I'm out of the water until next Friday because my treatment week is next week. Just when I was starting to finally feel really strong in the water I have to take a week off, go figure......
  • Also, keep in mind that when you went to the 2:1 ratio you upped your effort which would lead to a rise in time due to tiring yourself out more - as you get stronger that time will drop back down..... I can see adding breaststroke to work different muscles, mix things up, etc. but why put off the side breathing? It's still…
  • On my "distance" days I swim 6500 yards in 114 minutes by doing sets as follows: 250 yards in 5:30, 500 yards in 8:30, 1000 yards in 17:00, 1500 yards in 26:00, then the same sets in reverse order. Rest intervals vary based on how I feel for the day. On my short days I take out the 2 1500 yard sets & do some IM's with a…
  • Please let us know what does and/or doesn't work for you.....
  • All freestyle today: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 yards in 114 minutes....
  • Awesome, Gutzy, great work!!!!
  • Gutzy - I HATE when that happens.... 250 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 5 x 200 IM, 200 free, 3 x 200 IM, 2 x 100 IM, 1000 free, 500 free, 250 free in 97 minutes.....
  • AQ - I timed myself at the speed I swim my sets (not how fast I CAN swim them), adding together those set times gives me the times I list - it's actual swimming time instead of time in the water.....
  • In addition to thunder and/or lightning they will close a pool in the rain if it makes it difficult for the lifeguard to see the bottom of the pool.... Bruce - I would bet it's because they're new to you & I would also bet that you were more deliberate with your stroke.... All freestyle today - 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500,…
