  • It's really important to learn good form if you want to swing heavier kettlebells. Maybe 10 lbs is OK with Jillian Michaels, but if you watch real certified kettlebell instructors perform moves you'll reallize that her form is terrible. If I tried to swing my 35 pound kettlebell with her form my back would probably be…
  • This whole thread is exactly why I don't think there can be a "rule" about eating back calories. If the OP really burns only 100 calories, but she's been logging the amount MFP gives her, the calorie deficit is gone.
  • Go to www.irontamer.com and you can get a free program emailed to you called 101 kettlebell workouts. It's not a DVD, it's printed, but it's great. I was unsure how to do some of the moves, but I just went to you tube and watched and learned.
  • I have started actually picking my feet up off of the pedals at times on the elliptical - kind of like a running motion. It took a few times to get the hang of it. I'll do that for a minute or so every now and then and the feet numbness is much better.
  • I do agree that MFP starts us out with a deficit and perhaps all exercise calories should be eaten. The real problem comes in trying to accurately come up with how many calories were actually burned. I know that I can go for a 45 minute FAST walk in a very hilly neighborhood and my HRM will say I burned something like 450…
  • Amen. I also wish I had a dollar for every woman I see doing 100 tricep kickback with a 3lb dumbbell trying to get firm arms. It'll NEVER happen that way.
  • Any kind of diet pill you take will make your heart rate faster. That's how they work. That is also what is dangerous about them.
  • Thank you for clarifying that for me. I had no idea that my saying that not thinking about food for 24 hours was relaxing TO ME would cause someone to become so upset that they had to use asterisks and call me stupid. Thanks again.
  • If you read the Eat Stop Eat e-book, Pilon specifically says that you should do strength training with this to prevent any muscle loss. I have done weight workouts at the end of a fast and had no problems at all. I have also gone on runs at the end of a fast. 24 hours is really not that long as long as you stay hydrated.
  • Doing pushups on your knees doesn't really train your body to do "real ones". It's better to start doing them at an angle, such as with your hands on a bench and feet on the ground. When you can do them that way fairly easily, decrease the angle. Keep doing this until your hands are on the ground.
  • It's intermittent fasting. Basically, you fast for one or two 24 hour periods per week and eat pretty normally the rest of the time. This creates your calorie deficit. You do eat every day. You pick a 24 hour period like 2pm one day until 2pm the next day so that you have food every day. You can drink coffee, water, tea,…
  • planks, planks and more planks. There are tons of variations, side planks, elevated planks, etc. They're great. Don't do crunches or situps they are horrible for your lower back.
  • Please look up some you tube videos of swings, snatches, etc. before you do the Jillian Micheals kettlebell DVD. Do Not do swings like she does on the DVD. Her form is terrible. You can really hurt your back with kettlebells. Ideally, you should have someone who is kettlebell certified check out your form before starting,…
  • I guess they thought I was saying a dirty word. Also I meant that I hadn't used the DVD. I've used the kettlebell a lot.
  • Cardiac pain in women does not fit the "typical" profile. The classic chest pressure traveling down the left arm is mainly a male thing. Some women only get nauseous, some just feel indigestion type pain. I took care of a woman last week that had a tooth ache started vomiting. She passed out and her husband brought her to…
  • My feet used to get numb on the elliptical. Now I try really hard to actually lift my feet off of the pedal when it is back, sort of like a running motion. I never get numbness now.
  • My advice, as a cardiac nurse, is to not exercise any more until you are seen by a cardiologist. That pain could very well be indicative of ischemia, which is the heart muscle not getting enough oxygen, or it could be nothing at all. The only way to know for sure is to get checked out. I don't know your history, but if it…
  • Would you be happier if you measured and had lost no inches but 3 pounds. I'd say that would be worse. Isn't the main reason for wanting to lose weight being a smaller version of yourself. Personally, I don't care what I weigh so much because I'm the only one who sees that. I do care what size I am though. Congratulations…

  • I bought a 25 pound kettlebell at ****s Sporting Goods and it came with a DVD. I haven't used it though. You can find a lot of kettlebell workouts online that are probably better than DVD's. At www.irontamer.com you can get a free copy of 101 Kettlebell workouts emailed to you. There are some terrific workouts on there. If…
  • You can do bodyweight circuits that will work for cardio. Just pick something like 10 bodyweight exercises like burpees, pushups, jumping jacks, etc. Do as many as you can of each for one minute each, don't rest between exercises but rest 2-3 minutes at the end of the circuit. Repeat 3 times. This will burn calories while…
  • I use the measuring tape that came with my sewing kit. It works great.
  • Some people do it and say it's great. I tried for awhile and ended up with horrible plantar fasciitis and my heel still hurts a lot of the time. It really set me back.
  • That's 12 cups. 8 ounces in a cup and 12 ounces in a pint.

  • It's pretty hard for potassium to get outside of the normal range in healthy people. Usually kidney issues, severe diarrhea, or taking diuretics affect it. You would know if it was out of whack because it really makes you feel bad. Too high leads to nausea, muscle weakness and fatigue. Too low may cause cramping, heart…

  • It can cause BIG problems. A normal sodium blood level is also necessary for proper brain function. I work in an intensive care unit and you would not believe what even a small drop in sodium can do. It is also very hard to get it back up, usually requiring IV infusion of very salty fluid. Normal saline has 0,9% sodium and…
  • The first ten pounds come off pretty quickly and a lot of it is water weight. After that, it gets harder to lose. Since you don't weigh that much to begin with, it may only be 0.5 to 1 pound a week, but keep in mind that losing weight that slow makes it maintainable.
  • I do it once per week from about 2pm one day to 2pm the next day. I don't really do it for weight loss, but for the other health benefits of fasting. It definitely has made me realize what hunger really is and helps me on other days. I don't really find it hard at all. It's sort of nice not having to think about what I'm…
  • I usually drink about 16oz of water and then brush my teeth. I find I don't want sweet or salty (my two vices) if I have just brushed my teeth.

  • You can lift heavy weights and do 3 sets. A good rule of thumb is that if you can easily lift a weight 12-15 times, it's too light. I usually do 12 reps per set and I try to get my weight heavy enough so that I can barely lift that 12th rep. Often I'll move up in weight when I can get 12 and then if I get stuck on the 3rd…
  • Sometimes you have to consider the source. I think that Beachbody recommending you to get that much protein while at the same time encouraging you to purchase their protein bars and shakes is a little too convenient for them. It is almost impossible to get that much protein in actual food.
