  • They do all promote vegan diets, but sadly most of them cherry pick info and disregard other facts. As a vegan, I can't stand Colin Campbell and his book of lies- the china study. His heart may be in the right place, but his cognitive dissonance is strong as anyone I've ever met. Even his own conclusion doesn't support the…
  • You don't need that much protein at all... No where close to it. Check out Lean Gains for the slow bulk & Brad Pilon for how much protein (Brad has the research and science to back it up). Those two sites will have all your answers. I do think that Martin's protein amounts are high- even the NSCA agrees that athletes need…
  • Don't worry about it. I was 275 lbs when I started... I eat about 1500 calories a day normally. Some days I'll have 1000 cal, other days I'll have 1800 cal. Being a male, and active I "should" be eating 2800+ or even around 2000 while dieting. I have seen NO muscle loss at all, in fact I've gained significant strength. If…
  • Why we need it? We don't need whey protein. Most don't need extra supplements for protein - .6-.8 g per LEAN lb of body weight is all that's needed. 453 grams of muscle contains only 100 g of protein. We don't need as much as we thought we needed - even body builders... Check out Brad Pilon's blog where they show a study…
  • 50g of ground chia seeds mixed with a vegan shake. let sit in fridge for a while... Consistency of wet cement, but taste awesome! Keeps you feeling full for HOURS!
  • Carbs won't fill you up long term... Honestly get into ketosis. Low carb it- your hunger will stop, and your fat will shed off like crazy. 120 grams of protein is more than enough, and fill up on fat. Check out the info Brad Pilon & Matin Berkhan talk about. It'll help you greatly! Once going into ketosis I started…
  • I know this is a real old thread and post, but I felt like I needed to msg.... WebMD is FULL of half and untruths. They are stuck in the 80's & 90's as far as nutritional education goes. Fasting - especially what is being talked about here does NOT do anything negatively to your metabolism. In fact it actually increases…
  • So much misinformed well-intentioned advice on these boards... Contrary to what has been said, you CAN NOT go into starvation mode by lowering your calories like that... That is not how the body works... In fact, for most of us - a 20 day fast would not put us in starvation mode until we hit close to 7-8% bodyfat. Go…
  • UPDATE - I've been consuming .6 grams per lean pound of body weight along with fasted days and still gaining lean body mass... Also I wanted to share this with you guys - http://bradpilon.com/weight-loss/how-much-protein-do-we-really-need-to-eat/ Brad Pilon fact checks and really dives into the science. That test group was…
  • Well that is wrong info. Sadly it's been repeated so many times that many believe it to be true... Honestly .5g per lb. would be okay. Even the Strength and Conditioning Association who give info to Olympic lifters suggest .4-.8g per lb. that .8 is for elite athletes. 20% is most likely enough protein even with a good…
  • I track sugars because of ketosis & low carb dieting. I do that because ketosis controls my hunger more than any other way... Eating fruit - I don't do much of it, and since doing that- I've been shedding weight like crazy. A calorie is not a calorie - eat 3000 calories of marshmellows or 3000 of veggies. Results will…
  • The water or sand moves around more, which makes you have to use more stabilizing muscles. When doing overhead push presses, it sometimes takes me 6-10 seconds to complete one rep because I must balance the bag, when compared to a barbell, I lift the weight real easily without the need to balance. It takes free weights to…
  • I know this is an old post, but might benefit others.... I have one, and I love it. I ended up purchasing the Strength water bag. you can pack up to 80lb. of water in it, and easily travel with it. Honestly, it's one of the best workouts I've ever had, and using less weight (80 lb. of water) is actually much harder than…
  • That would work well if MFP used an accurate formula. To my knowledge they use a formula that shows burned calories of 3500 cal= 1 lb. of fat. However that would be more accurate if you were in ketosis. To burn a lb of fat you'd need to burn 4077 calories (453 grams x 9) (one gram of fat = 9 calories) so eating back burned…
  • The only problem with that is its your brain telling you and not your stomach. Most don't know when they are really genuinely hungry and NEED nutrients. Drink water and see later....
  • We are not all "snowflakes". We are not different. Unless you have a medical condition - what works for one will work for another. I never understood eating back exercised calories while losing weight. Eating around your BMR to drop weight and see results is a good idea as long as you can create healthy habits by the time…
  • You've got nothing but fat to lose :P So try the lowered calorie intake & see... Like I said, I dropped down to 1500/day and I'm eating them in a 6 hour window- weight is falling off at a rate of .5 lb a day at the moment... My energy is still great and feel awesome! I question people (even nutritionists) b/c many don't…
  • Even though Fitbit is the worst customer service, they have the best product at the moment. Don't buy their premium as it's complete BS. Jawbone gets stuck in clothing and needs to be taken off to be synced. Fuelband gives info that is all over the map & it's not in anything but their "fuel" (no calorie reading). I hate to…
  • Thats right ^ Track the carbs and keep the carbs low! Any carb that is from fiber is a "free carb".

  • If I were to enter a contest at work, I would wear the lightest clothes that day (no underwear or anything & no belt) & I would do a 24+ fast to ensure I win :) Thats just me though. It's a flawed system b/c clothes can vary greatly.... The only good point there is stick with the same scale each time.
  • There is a lot of money for doctors to promote things they know nothing about! Think of those real old cigarette ads with the doctors in it ;) Happened for years, and will always continue.
  • Your PT is not a nutritionist, nor a doctor. & Not all doctors are nutritionists or fat loss experts either. In fact, anyone can be a personal trainer or doctor with little to no nutritional knowledge. I would experiment with going lower in the calories and taking more nutrient dense foods. @ 225 lbs. I occasionally eat…
  • Working out more (if she is) could also result in eating more as well... I have heard people on here saying they are burning 1000 calories from their hour long weight workout... When the most I've done was around 300 from a weight workout. I think the calorie burn is over estimated by many on here, and for her to burn an…
  • Doing what I said should have you losing 1.5ish lbs per week. When studies show people on a calorie diet of say 2000 cal. +/- 100 it's usually +/- 200. Weighing and tracking everything is important. Especially if there is no processed foods- you can greatly over estimate natural food consumption. Also make your dairy…
  • Then you are eating too much & not burning enough. Drop your calories down to 1500 daily by removing some protein. There is no need for 1g of protein per lb. anyway. Drop that into half, and if need be, increase your fat intake slightly. Exercise will make you look good naked, but if you want to lose fat, it's kinda hard…
  • Drink a lot of water or zero calorie drinks, and bring your own snacks if need be. Let them know you are following a strict diet. I let all my friends know that so they are not offended when I turn down things. In fact, many will not offer to me anymore because sometimes that in itself if too tempting. Once in a while is…
  • If you reduce your calories too much you won't be very active, so there is a line you shouldn't cross... Many people think doing one thing actually was the result of weight loss, when it could have been something else... Here is a good article on metabolism. This guy is 100% clinical research- not bro-science.…
