Hi! I'm 56 and have been using mfp for a couple of years. My shift from calorie restriction to giving my body a more efficient fuel source began a few months ago. I have maintained a 20 lb weight loss over the past year with some fluctuations. I estimate my bmi to be about 50% fat. I have hit a plateau and am experiencing…

I don't know the exact science of it, but if I don't drink around 64 oz a day, I GAIN weight. Once I start drinking enough water again I loose it. I suspect it has something to do with toxic by products when fat is released. Maybe the body trying to dilute toxic acid levels that aren't being flushed out? Seems like I read…

My feelings about obesity are that it is a sad phenomenon. My thinking about it is that there are many factors involved. One of the foremost is STRESS. Not just the hormonal consequences of it (which are profoundly disturbing), but the behavioral as well. The frantic pace at which we live is not conducive to really…

This is a sad fact. I tried to get a job at a local goodwill store and they didn't have any openings because they are largely staffed by volunteers! WHAT? Yet they advertise that the organization's mission is to employ displaced homemakers and other workers who are difficult to place in the workforce. It won't keep me from…

Finally! Someone who doesn't think tomatoes and cottage cheese are a weird combo! I love it.

I thought it was "this side of the pond" And what is pink gin?

I've had flat iron cooked "dancing" squid and it's like dinner AND a show. It was good and not even close to the squirmy rubbery texture of shiritake noodles. But I imagine if over or under cooked it might come close. What was worse than the texture of the shiritake was the horrid ammonia-like smell before cooking. It's…

It's a squid on top of rice (called ikadon). You pour soy sauce on it. The viral YouTube video was filmed in the city near where I live (Hakodate) ; there's an entire building that serves that kind of food (stuff on top of rice) but it's not all gross like the squid. The dancing squid dish is just a novelty for tourists.…

Yes. Shirataki noodles. But then they seem to eat just about anything in Japan. There is this one octopus dish that they eat raw. When they pour some kind of flavored vinegar on it---it kind of dances at you--I thought it was alive. Forget what it is called. It's very low in calories though. [/quote] It's a squid…

I know where you're coming from, man....but it's the texture that I have a problem with. I love Asian dishes though, and would definitely try them cooked that style by someone who really knew what they were doing.

If insects and animals won't eat it..... Just sayin'.......

My sides are hurting! Just sooooo funny!

I eat very little prepared or refined food, so I don't have a lot of experience with "diet" food. But I'm with Nomicat77 on the Shiritake noodles. Especially the "fettuccine" style. They are rubbery and gag me, and I do NOT have a sensitive gag reflex. So IMO, they are just icky. The "angel hair" variety is somewhat easier…

That's what I would do. Exercise is something separate from general activity level. But it doesn't sound like you are truly sedentary. Don't short change yourself with too few calories. You can always reduce your basic calorie consumption if you aren't loosing, but if you start out too low you might stall and have no room…

By the way, I'm near Kalamazoo, MI.

I am nearly 53 years old, 186 lbs, and only 5‘0“ tall. I was a petite 100-115 lbs for the first 2/3rds of my life, except for the brief recovery times from pregnancies. I was always active and strong. Going into my late 30‘s, however, my body image became very negative, a side effect of unhealthy relationships. I began to…

What an excellent post! I'm new to this forum so I hope people who read will know what I'm referring to. Thanks for sharing all your photos that demonstrate how important weight bearing exercise is to appearance.

At my last weigh in 2/13/2013 I was 186.5 lbs. I weigh once a week. I am 5'0" and am a couple of months away from turning 53 years old. I have been a yo-yo dieter in the past and 2 years ago went on an insanely low calorie diet. I lost weight....oh yeah...to the tune of 35 lbs. in 3 months, but naturally, a lot of it was…

Your success is so inspiring! I've had a profile for about a month that my daughter set up for me, but I just discovered this app was available for Blackberry and am addicted to it! I am only 5 feet tall and actually started at 198 lbs.. Down to 186.5 as of today. Here's to us! Keep up the good work!
