This is a really good idea. Sometimes the disaster you imagine is just not that big a deal. And even if the numbers end up looking a bit scary, knowledge is power. ("Whoa! Won't do that again.")

Don't feel all is lost. You're already doing great. A few bad days won't ruin all you've accomplished. Just try to focus on how to move forward. A few other thoughts: Are you nursing? If so, 1200 calories is probably not enough for you. The baby obviously is taking some some of that. Also, caring for a baby (especially as…

One of the great things about the MFP method is you can fit ANYTHING into your diet and still lose weight. I have buttermilk pancakes (real deal, not some diet version) twice a month. I make spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, hamburgers (well, husband handles those). Last week I made a chocolate layer cake for my son's…

Bump for the gnudi recipe. Sounds terrific.

I would suggest a custom profile. I'm quite a bit older than you (48), 5'6", and I started at 158 pounds. I did 1200 calories for about 2 weeks or so and lost several pounds pretty quickly but found that 1200 was a little too limiting. After calculating my BMR (about 1400) and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), I upped…

To answer your question: It's excellent! I've been doing this for 6 weeks, have also lost 11 pounds, and I feel better than I have in years. Pay attention to how good you're feeling, and let that feeling carry you along. Best of luck.

I second that. I regret not wearing bikinis when I was younger and (almost) looked that good. What was I thinking?

Tuna salad (minimal mayo) spooned into a scooped-out tomato. Of course, you need a good tomato, which is hard to find this time of year. This will be a frequent lunch this summer, when the farmer's markets are in full swing.

Wow. You look great. Your current weight was my starting weight (I'm 5'6"), but there's no way I could get into an 8 in the 150s. Was barely staying at a 12 (and an ill-fitting 12). I'm looking forward to getting into single digits myself, but I'll need to get south of 140 to do it (8 pounds away).

Great story. You nailed one of the problems of picky eating--wishing the despised thing tasted like something else. Good for you figuring this out. It gives me hope that my son might get to this point when he's older.

You sound just like my son. He has major problems with texture. Anything wet or slippery--no go. He eats no fruit, but he does tolerate some vegetables. He generally likes raw or very lightly cooked vegetables (kohlrabi, sweet potatoes (raw only), broccoli, green beans, jicama. Crunchy is good. Could this be a start for…

I actually leave the skin on the bananas. When they get overripe, I just toss 'em in the freezer, with skin intact. The skin makes a perfect freezer bag. When I use them (for smoothies or banana bread) I just peel away the skin (making sure I get any peel fibers that may try to stay with the fruit. They seem to be…

Left-overs: lasagne with meat sauce. Calorie bomb, but delicious. Only having a half (or so) serving tonight. Last night had a full serving, 1-1/2 glasses of pinot noir, and a Caesar salad (and a little bread). Nearly 1000 calories for everything, but so good! No wine tonight, either. :grumble:

My favorite cabbage dish: Unstuffed Cabbage stew, from Jane Brody's Good Food Gourmet. Super yummy with mashed potatoes, but I'll be skipping that part now (or maybe just a small helping). Besides the cabbage, it contains lamb (and rice) meatballs. Basic ingredients are: large onion 2-pound head of green cabbage 1 pound…

Hi, imdawn-- My diary is open if you want to have look. Our weight-loss goals are pretty similar. I started at 1200 calories, but upped it a few weeks ago to mid-1300s using TDEE minus 20%. I'll let someone else explain that. I've had a lot of success so far (9 pounds since Jan. 10) on both the 1200 and 1300-something…

I was wondering this today, as my HRM registered 357 cals. for 35 minutes on the treadmill (before subtracting my BMR). My previous 35 minute workout was 295 cals. I checked my heartrate stats: today, the average heartrate was a lot higher 155 versus 138. I had intended to increase the intensity. I guess it worked. Anyway,…

I've lost 9 pounds since January 10. I'm 5'6" and started out at 158. Goal is 135, or perhaps a bit lower.

My diary is open. I recently upped my calories to mid-1300s (started at 1200). A lot of the stuff in my diary is from my recipe section, so individual ingredients aren't usually shown. FWIW, I cook a lot from Cook's Illustrated, which emphasizes flavor and quality ingredients, many of which are fattening. Epicurious is…

Just wanted to say, I love your profile photo. As to your question, I would agree with many of the other commenters that you should try for a little more consistency in your daily calories. That said, 5 pounds gone in a month is nothing to sneeze at.

For burgers, we mix the two kinds of ground beef: 80/20 (chuck?) and 90/10 (sirloin)--half for each type. The fat gives a nice juicy texture, the lean provides better flavor. My husband makes these, and they are the best burgers in the world. Nothing else added to the meat, except a little salt and pepper. We also just got…
