A long hot shower or bath. It is the only way I can get my bones warm. Otherwise you need wool. My last Brevet (200k) the high was 50F and I couldn't take a hot shower afterwards. I put on a clean merino wool sweater and left on my long wool socks. The wool along with the car's heater, hot food, and hot coffee warmed me up…

Due to budget: See if someone will loan you a mountain bike (preferably a hard-tail mtb). I suspect that you will have hills in West Virginia and the lower gearing on the MTB will encourage you to ride more. If they will let you then use some money to get slick tires for the MTB so you can ride on the road. Check in the…

I still ride when the temps dip into the low 30's (F). I use standard shorts and bibs but where thermal tights over the bibs. When it is really cold, then I wear thermal knee warmers with the thermal tights over the top. I was buying $20 Walmart Thermal Tights but I haven't been able to find them in the last two years :-(…

I prefer staying on Asphalt but this was a good movie. Ride the Divide 2010 NR80 minutes Starting in Banff, Canada, and ending at the U.S.-Mexico border, the Great Divide mountain bike race extends 2,700 miles along the Continental Divide. This scenic documentary follows three determined cyclists attempting the grueling…

This week is the Interbike 2013 show ( http://www.interbike.com/show-info/show-overview.htm ) thus in North America it is the end of the 2013 Season. I know that in the last month both Trek and Raleigh were discounting their 2013 models. I'd say that about now is the time for a good discount on a 2013 model. Have you…

From what I've heard and experienced, the rotational weight of the tire (wheel+rim) is where you feel the acceleration with tires not the diameter. When I hear, "roadie" then I am thinking that you mean a road bike and almost all road bikes except for maybe specialty French Brevet style bikes have 700c tires nowadays. Of…

Yeah, I'm dreaming of either a Seven Cycles Axiom SL or Spectrum Custom in Ti. Both run between $6-8K, so it's just a dream. I did talk to someone who rides Ti (Litespeed) and he confirmed that only high end carbon rides like high end Ti. Of course he is <200lbs so he doesn't have to worry as much about strain on a carbon…

Sounds like it's time to go with my favorite quote then, "Pain is just weakness leaving your body" Rule #5 Man ;-) BTW, in preparation for 10-Gap October (128 miles with 16,000ft of elev. gain); I rode the big ring home http://ridewithgps.com/trips/1624718

What type of gears do you have on your bike? You can do some minor climbing training by getting into your biggest gears on flats and even gentle inclines. Be careful through utilizing this technique and make sure you pay attention to the knee strain so you don't hurt yourself. Your drivetrain will need to be in good shape…

emaren, thanks for the link to the microshifts.. I had looked at performance several times but not at those shifters. Sounds as though I could change those shifters and my 8-speed cassette and chain to 9-speed for < $300. Me likes that idea.

The lugged-steel fuji is a rough ride? Do you mean rough as in a lot of felt road vibrations and bumps? IMO, the Steel Fuji should be riding like a Cadillac. I'd like to know where to get those $100 integrated shifters. Unless the reference is to "bar-end" shifters and I did this conversion to a 1983 Schwinn and loved the…

Do you have a budget in mind? That greatly affects the choices. The type of bike is also dependent on where you plan to ride and how much you plan to ride. I bought a Cruiser style bike for my wife and I when we started riding and if I had it to do over again then I would have bought us both flat-bar road bikes instead of…

On February 3, 2012 a dog hit my front wheel while I was doing 20+mph. The last thing I remember is turning my head to see the other dog leaping off of the bank at my bike so I did not see the dog coming from the front that hit my tire. I don't remember anything of what happened for the next 30-40 minutes. My helmet…

David, Georgia also has the 3-foot law but as I learned in my incident if there are no eye-witnesses then the police will not enforce the 3-foot law. At least not in Pike County, Georgia.

I know the feeling all too well. A homeowner's dog chased me across the centerline so I deployed the dog spray. The homeowner chases me down in his truck and forces me off the road. The homeowner then knocks the phone out of my hand and knocks me off my bike. Mind you, this was about my third ride after a total left…

I'm planning my first night brevet this month as well... you're not doing the one here in Georgia are you? The biggest part of the night Brevet, so I'm told by the RBA, is to discipline yourself to ride with the group. It needs to be treated more like a true Audaux ride where teamwork is the goal rather than a fast finish…

There is a third team started so there is plenty of room left for more cyclists to ride a virtual Tour de France.

Well then if Team 2 is filled; then I'll jump in with Team 3 at #321 :-D Someone remind me, how do I log all this? Strava and Excel?

The huge amount of caffeine is known by pro-cyclists who would use caffeine suppositories to avoid the upper-GI distress. UCI limits the amount of caffeine in blood for this reason and having too much caffeine is considered "doping" IIRC

If someone wants 311 then I'll not complain but if you are lacking a member then I'll be glad to add my meager mileage to the effort. Maybe my rest days will not coincide with the big KM days this year :-)

With my 3.5lb seat bag and 3 water bottles, I completed 201.7 miles in a total time of 11h22m, on bike time 10:41, with an average moving speed of 18.9mph. Link for the ride: http://ridewithgps.com/trips/1432554

I was curious so I weighed my Saddle bag with all the goodies loaded for tomorrow; 3.2lbs. However, my commuter is 40+lbs with panniers and all so my total bike weight tomorrow will be about 25lbs. That 15lbs difference feels like a supercharger on the engine ;-D
-
I am glad to hear the confidence in your post. Now I know without a doubt that you'll finish the ride with time to spare and enjoy the ride as well! 1.5lbs! Nice job! I think my saddle bag empty weighs almost that much :-D As far as timing go on completing the ride, rest stops are huge time killers. Watch your time closely…

Since I am still at least 35lbs over my goal weight and commute on a 40+lb touring bike, I don't think the OP's going to really notice the weight from she will be carrying. This is especially true if the goal is to finish the course rather than make the best time possible on the course. If the OP were shooting for a 20+mph…

The Georgia RBA for our Brevets has completed RAAM twice, on a fixie! It is amazing to hear his stories of the Race. I want to follow RAAM this year because I am inspired to attempt an Elite PAC Tour one day and the Elite PAC Tour is considered the best training ride for RAAM. http://www.pactour.com/elite.html

Go to Bike Forums and look for links to the free repair books in the Repair Forum... IIRC it's stickied at the top of the forum. Otherwise, getting a set of folding bead slick tires for your bike will give you a remarkable jolt of felt speed versus the off-road tires you now have. Assuming you do most of your riding on the…
