Plenty of stuff out there. Or design your own. Just stay away from the hype.

I think this thread is useless without pictures.

                Try Wendler 5/3/1

Love my new GoTrails. Like the GoRuns, they're more semi-minimalist but great.

No, I understood exactly what you meant. You've prejudged the people at Gold's to be meatheads and barbie dolls.

C25k is great. And running helps you lose weight, but isn't a full body workout.

I got lucky on the tractor tire - community recycle/large trash drop-off. I was dropping off some paint and saw a stack of tires. Asked "Can I have one of those?"

Step one - move the right foot forward. Step two - move the left foot forward. Step three - repeat In other words, it's easy - don't get intimidated. Just start running!

By all means, join PF. No one should ever consider joining a gym like Gold's that actually has fit, healthy people using it.

I googled it. I refused to go on past the hype "never seen before!" If it smells like BS, it probably is BS. Try Starting Strength or StrongLifts 5x5 instead.

It's good to see people willing to admit and discuss being bipolar. I also have bipolar disorder and - let's just say that food binging is one of my least destructive behaviors. I have found the only thing that keeps me sane is activity. The more intense, the better. If I feel a swing coming on, I go and hit the weights,…

With squats and deadlifts, provided you are lifting heavy, you really don't need anything else except for weighted lunges.

Good to know this. Can you tell, though, where I can get a 330 lb dumbbell?

I believe that Vivo Barefoot makes casual and dress minimalist shoes.Me, I just wear a black pair of GoRuns most of the time.

I think you have no idea what CalRopes are.

                Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe.

You'd be a lot better off on the "boy's side" with free weights and compound lifts. Try googling StrongLifts 5x5 or picking up Starting Strength.

I run in Vibram FiveFingers, Skeletoes, and GoRuns, and barefoot on occasion. I will never go back to "real" shoes.

When I've tried ropes, I loved them. They left my muscles aching. But I can't see how they can be a replacement for heavy lifting, any more than circuit training would be. Personally, I'd drop any isolated muscle training and do compound lifts, the ropes training, and high intensity intervals for the cardio.

StrongLifts or Starting Strength would be far better. Less lifts, no machines, and he's going to see some pretty quick results which will provide motivation to continue.

You might try videoing your form. You could be leaning over too far, not pushing your butt far enough back, etc. I also think you should try closing your stance up to hip-width. When I first started squatting, my stance was too wide and I had balance issues as well.

Nothing wrong with starting with the 10 kg bar. Focus on form and only had weight when you have the form down.

I've just ordered one of the Gaiam stability ball chairs. I've thought about a standing desk, but not sure how to re-arrange for that given the number of files I usually have spread out. Most days, I take a workout break every 2 hours and do push-ups, squats, etc. or run the stairs. I've got a pull-up bar I can put up but…

For the running, try doing some interval training. For sit-ups, try other core exercises like planks to strengthen your abs.

Have you watched the video? In a proper swing, you snap your hips forward. EDIT - My first post should have said "full-body pop". Perhaps that's the confusion. I've seen some videos that keep the hips tucked in and say to use the whole body. That way just doesn't feel right. Push the hips back, then snap forward with the…

That's my thought as well. I've tried using more of a "pop" for a swing and it just doesn't feel right.

                Why wide-legged?

I get up and do a short exercise routine every 1-2 hours - push-ups and squats, run the stairs, etc. Just enough to get the heartrate up without sweating profusely.

Of course vibration plates work! So many ads and big gyms can't be wrong. Double the whammy and get a shake weight to use on the vibration plate. Twice as many "micro contractions"! Sarcasm aside, I have yet to see a study that shows any real effectiveness to vibrating your muscles during a workout.
