This is a really good topic and something I struggle with too. Does anyone have advice on how to know if your calories and workouts are actuallt maintaining and not making you gain or lose? Im counting calories, trying to more eat whole foods, avoiding refined sugar and alcohol (at least for right now until I can control myself a little around a delicious Reds apple Ale ;) ) and drinking tons of water. Just started the running. Prob not ready to add other workouts just yet.

Biggest for me was that in cutting down in calories I actually ended up "accidentally" eating healthier foods because I could eat more of them and feel well fed. It's way more satisfying to be full on vegetables and rice than to eat a big ole piece of cake and use up all of your calories.

Definitely all good ideas. I've been doing some walking prior to this but gained about 20 pounds using the knee as an excuse for not doing more. Plus Im walk-jogging right now and going deathly slow. :) thanks for the encouragement!

It takes a lot of energy just to meet your basal metabolic needs for your organs to function even at a low level over say 8 hours. Since you're not eating anything, you're not replenishing that energy expenditure.
