Definitely not worthless. And besides that, you are saving gas and reducing CO2 emissions, which are excellent benefits. What your doctor should have told you is that you need to add on to this great start you've made. Your doc needs to work on his bedside manner!

I travel a lot and thus must eat in restaurants frequently. I refuse to use the excuse "but I ate in a restaurant" to avoid tracking my calories.

Only a week? Give it some time. Myfitnesspal recommends that you NOT weigh yourself daily because weight fluctuates so much. They recommend weekly weigh-ins. Just keep doing the right things and give it some time.
