  • 20 degrees and over, light variable wind I do running tights, wool socks, running tank, my lightweight running jacket (wind/water proof) hat, and cheap cotton gloves (they generally come off and on all throughout the run). 20 and below with ferocious wind (25 mph plus) I add a lightweight drawstring pant ontop of tights…
  • I started running at 140 and 5'3. I'm now down to 124. When I finished c25k, I was running 5k in 39:20, about a 13 min pace. I kept running. I did a 5k training plan to focus on increasing my mileage gradually (I got my long runs to 8 miles before running my first 5k) and in 3 months time my 5k was down to 29:52. For the…
  • I think you made the right decision when you decided to switch to the half. You don't want your first marathon to be a miserable experience or it may be your only marathon. Best to put it off for a bit, see if maybe there is another one 3 or 4 months out, if you are in a hurry.
  • I'm in for 100. I've got hm #5 in Feb, so this should help me stay motivated! Good luck everyone!
  • Just registered for a New Year's 5k in Needham, MA on jan 1st. I think a big 5k pr would be a great way to start thd year!
  • To finally run a sub 2 half marathon. 5th time's a charm! Sub 25 5k - first attempt Jan 1 Train for my first marathon. Run 1000 miles during the year (will finsh 2013 with about 850) In 2013, I got a pr in all of my 7 races, would love to do the same in 2014.
  • I started exercising because I was unhealthy and wanted to set a better example for my young child. I am relatively fit now. I can run 15 miles. I can do several chin ups, still working on pull ups. I can carry my 4 year old for 2 miles before I get grumpy. I still can't touch my toes (not flexible). I eat a decent diet.…
  • This afternoon. 3 mile run over hills in 23F temps pushing my 4 y.o. in a jogger (don't worry, she was warm with her 3 layers, blanket and wind cover). She said she'd nap if we went for a run. Pretty intense.
  • I'm an idiot too! I went out the other day, 35F, raining, 17mph winds. I had fun. I was out a couple of weeks ago, 20F, 25MPH winds, climbing toward 39MPH when it was time to head back in. Figured out how to reduce my wind exposure on that one by running under a ridge instead of on top like normal, which helped. I usually…
  • I agree, no stress test. Op, slow down! Common rookie mistake is to run much too fast. I did when I was starting. C25k will help you figure out a sustainable running pace. Shin splints, yes get fitted for shoes at a proper running store. But I also wanted to point out that sometimes our day to day shoes can actually be the…
  • That is stupid! It doesn't make sense that there would be a limit on something timed like that. Glad I have a droid! For squats, because I don't find straight squats that challenging either, I've been holding a weighted back pack.
  • Really? I have the android app. For ladders I start at one, head up the ladder, usually head back down at 9 or 10 reps (I feel like I get more work in by heading back down and decreasing the rest.) If you got back down to 1 you'd be able to go back up again. I end up at more like 66 reps or so. To the op, the ladders and…
  • I I hate burpees! And one-legged romanian deadlifts. The deadlifts because I fall over, the burpees because they are torture. I still do them because burpees get my heart rate up and I think the deadlifts will eventually help my balance.
  • I'm a marathoner on the inside. I've got half marathon #5 coming up in NH in Feb. I love doing 14, 15 and 16 mile long runs, but I haven't pulled the trigger and trained for a full yet. I'm a fulltime working, busy, single mom of a 4 year old that commutes for 2 hours every day. In better weather I run to or from the…
  • I find this interesting. I've done a race since the marathon, in boston, and in fact it was a BAA race (10k, didn't check a bag at the half) and they provided opaque plastic bags and they let me put my carrier bag right inside without looking in it. But op, iphones are tiny, just get an armband in the future just in case…
  • I was just saying the other day that although I don't necessarily need to, I keep my long runs purposely in the 10-15 mile range (I've only ever run HMs and have #5 on the horizon) because the long run is my "me" time. I do run it with a partner a lot, but she ditched me for the winter. I look forward to my run every week.…
  • I just saw this, but I wanted to add that 7 weeks should be enough time. I did two halfs 4 weeks apart back in October and November. I planned that race #1 would be my huge pr and race #2 was just for fun. Race #1 went badly. I beat my pr by 30 seconds, but had no skin left on my legs and wanted to die. So afrer a couple…
  • I hate treamills. If I do happen to use one I do intervals. I warmup at 6.5-6.7 and then very my speeds up to 8.5 or 9 on a good day. I keep my incline at a 2. Height does not limit our capacity for running! That's silly! I'm 5'3. I run the speeds I do because of my ability and training, like everyone else. I run races…
  • Wow! You guys are all so scheduled! My race calendar so far: Feb 23, 2014 - Half in the Hamptons, HM, Hampton Beach, NH. I'll probably do the Twin Lights Half in Gloucester, MA in May because it was fun last year. Of course I'm waiting on putting together my full schedule because I'm still deciding if it's time to pull the…
  • I wouldn't worry too much about the fact that you added a couple of weeks to the schedule. The point was to gradually increase your running so that when you officially train for your half you aren't starting from nothing. That goal is already accomplished. Your 11 miles is scheduled the day before your 15k race? Skip it!…
  • I purchased the garmin fr 220 yesterday after one of my mfp friends pointed me to the reviews at the above site. I decided it was time because I finally have more than two paces (going and stopped). I feel like now that I'm a little more comfortable running faster occasionally that this will help me achieve my goals. I…
  • Congrats on getting in! That's awesomee! I'm in the lottery too, for the second time.... it's really too bad about the 3 strikes rule! Last year I think I had to pay $11 though.
  • Turkey trot 4-miler, Somerville, MA. 37:46. Pushing a 4 y.o. in a stroller with some hills and wind. Last year, the stroller weighed less and I finished in 44:15. Guess I'm improving!
  • When I look at the fit people, I don't think I am one. But I do move my body quite a bit. I have asthma so this does affect my perception. I run 6 days a week. I try for 30-35 miles but in winter I often only manage 23 (I often have to push my 3 yo in the jogger on runs and this isn't always safe in winter so I have to cut…
  • It hasn't come up for me to run below 15F so far. But I'm fine with 15 and will try lower if the opportunity presents itself. I have asthma too, but for some reason cold weather running doesn't bother me as long as my lungsr are warm. I did low 20s with lots of wind yesterday and it was fine.
  • I'm really hoping to finally get half marathon #5 under 2 hours. I picked a flat course at least, but the race is in February. In New Hamphire. Other than that in 2014 I'm debating training for a sub-25 5k or training for a marathon. My current 5k pr is 26:52, but I'll pick a flat course for the sub-25 attempt too.
  • I did not run as young person. The collective of parents, gym teachers and doctors wouldn't let me try because of asthma. Hogwash! I made several attempts to learn to run as an adult and it finally took in June of 2012. I ran 175 miles in 2012. So far for 2013 I'm at 742 and I did have to take a full month off this year…
  • You'll be fine training normal if you aren't close to any hills. That sounds lovely though. But if most of the downhill is in the first 6 miles, make sure to dial it back and not go out too fast. These silly new england courses I've been running generally are either rolling hills the whole way or steep hills in the second…
  • My first and only 10k was inJune. It was 88 degrees, I wasn't used to hot weather running at the time and I struggled to the finish line in 1:01:29. I am 35 and weigh somewhere between 125 and 132. The first 10k of my last half marathon was just under 56 minutes so I assume I could do better than 1:01.
