  • Are the childhood obesity levels higher than the US? Depends on what you're comparing them to. I don't see a lot of obese children here. Some--yes. Just like I see some adults. They stick out because they're not the norm. Never eaten or seen the cheese you're mentioning. I guess it's a rarity--but thanks for mentioning it.…
  • Everyone can have an opinion on what works. Cultures that eat rice, pasta, and potatoes do so because protein costs money and not everyone can afford a high protein diet. Some, like Italy, eat that way because it's their culture and habit because coming out of WWII food was scarse. The Mediterranean Diet has won UNESCO…
  • The blue zone study by Keyes was done in the 50's. That was a long time ago. The people in the blue zones live longer than average and are healthier than average. That hasn't changed. Others are now studying the blue zones--why, if it's all bunk? I live in Italy and the majority of people are very thin, and they eat lots…
  • First of all, you're eating too little. It's dangerous, and there are health consequences. It can also lead to binging when your body rebels and then you develop an ED. Eat what MFP gives you so that you get your vital nutrients. Secondly--what's the big rush? You put on the weight over time, it'll come off over time.…
  • Wild caught salmon has less fat and therefore fewer calories. You have to be careful how you cook wild caught or it will come out dry. PS: they are both correct.
  • Once you have it--it never goes away. It can flare up at anytime. As you've seen, it's extremely painful. I had it years ago and did all the rounds, trying this and that. A friend of mine that is a nurse, married to a doctor, told me to do this exercise: before getting out of bed, flex your toes straight out in front as…
  • This is a very old thread and the people that posted are long gone. However, you can start your own thread or hope that there's interest and some people pick it up from here. Good luck.
  • Welcome and good luck with your weight loss. There's a lot of information on the boards. Just keep checking in and you'll learn much. I'm originally from Minnesota and worked in Minneapolis for 8 years. I worked as an interior designer for the now defunct Daytons. I married an Italian and moved to Italy many years ago,…
  • There are ways to lose without measuring. You'll have to learn your portion size and which foods are high calorie (to be avoided or limited). As mentioned, sauces are high calorie, as are butter and oil. If you see a dish swimming in oil--better to choose something else. Deserts are also high calorie, so go light with…
  • That's true, but more comes out as vapor--there have been numerous threads on the subject. And, as you yourself said, drinking liters of water before bed didn't work. If it did we could all lose fat easily by drinking lots of water.
  • I don't use motivation--it'll never last. I use habit. Exercising is just something I do everyday.
  • May all be true--but don't throw out the baby with the bath water. Times were very different then. The Med diet and village eating is still health worthy. He just brought it to the attention of many.
  • Actually you don't "pee it out", it comes out as vapor as you breath--sort of like a furnace burning fuel.
  • It's so worth it! (I live here). About 10 years ago there was an Escher exhibition in Rome. I saw it twice, I was so captivated. I told my husband that I want to see this one, he said "But....we've already seen it". Yeah sure. I'm going alone if necessary. I'm not letting the opportunity pass.
  • I agree with @DFW_Tom in many ways. You're 30. Are you going to suffer for the rest of your life? You need to find a new way and perhaps try some different things. I think you can eat food you like and still lose. There are so many options. Up your protein, veggies, and fruit. See what happens. Most menus have lower…
  • We have an Escher exhibition coming to Rome. It will be 300 of his works. I wouldn't miss it.
  • Yes--I know. I believe his name was Keyes. He especially liked the way they ate in small villages. People were poor, that's why they ate less meat and more legumes. They also foraged on the hillsides and in the countryside. In the village where my MIL was born, they ate greens that you couldn't even buy in the cities. When…
  • I agree with you. I had 3 tsp of EVOO today for 150 calories. Now, this is just for cooking and salads. I'm sure there's oil in other things I ate today. Will it add up to 480 calories total? I don't know. That's why I said there's a lot of nonsense on the Med diet. Just use common sense. No one seems to talk about that…
  • I have 2 recipes that I use constantly. I brown sliced or pieces of chicken breast in EVOO with galic powder, lemon pepper, and salt. Real simple. Real tasty. I buy a very tender spacocked (just a chicken cut open) small size. I put it in a non-stick frying pan, skin side down, and add garlic powder, salt, lemon pepper,…
  • Wishing you the best with your plans (whatever they may be).
  • Weight loss is odd. It follows a downward trend over time, but fluctuates a great deal. That can be discouraging. As Tom said, just keep going. If you have no weight loss after a month, then it's time to re-evaluate, and change things a bit. Seeing a trend takes awhile, so just be patient. Success will come.
  • If stress is causing you to binge--you need to manage that. There are methods such as meditation, yoga, etc. that you might want to look into. Crafts can keep your hands and mind busy too. As for your weight loss in 3 weeks, it was awfully steep. Much of that was probably water weight. You need to eat enough or you will…
  • The only thing I'll add to the excellent posters above is to keep a weekly journal of your measurements. When you hit a plateau or a water weight jump it's always demoralizing. When you can pull out that tape measure and actually see the inches or centimeters lost it helps pull you up. Another thing to do is follow the…
  • Happy for you Niner. I have pain everyday at some level. I have OA and have to push through it constantly. I do whatever I can (stretching and exercise wise) to power through--everyday. Not easy, but necessary.
  • Yep---what they all said. That was NOT a bet you should have made. You'll harm your health trying to win. So...you won't win, even if you could. If you have a care for your body and health, do what PAV suggested. That's the smart route, and yes follow the Retroguy's advice when you shave. Sorry.
  • This is a very common problem. The best thing to do is take weekly measurements and keep a journal. That way you can SEE your progress as you go along. Read the SUCCESS threads. They will pull you up when you are down. Many are inspiring. Just keep going. This is a long-haul project. It's really for the rest of your life…
  • Oh---please tell us what she says about the Med diet. I live in Italy and that's our way of eating. I find that a lot of "experts" are actually clueless about what it really is.
  • Well, between tracking calories and using "My Plate" I'd have to say her method isn't exactly accurate either. Is there some good information buried in there? Perhaps. You'll have to decide what works best for you. It's important to rein in overeating and get your portions down. I find MFP to be very helpful and liberating.
  • Yep--plan to deflect the conversation---"It's so GOOD to see you after all this time, I think about you often, what are you doing these days?" Ask about their kids, their dogs, their houses, cabins, etc, etc, Keep the ball in their court and distract them.
