I've recently started working out first thing in the morning. I get up, throw on exercise clothing, have a quick cup of java and a small bowl of oatmeal with berries and protein powder, then head straight to the gym. Not enough food to make me bloated, but enough to give me energy to begin exercising. Working fairly well…

The US population is quite stubborn about adopting the system of measurements used by virtually the rest of the planet (to the distress of many of us with scientific backgrounds). We're stuck with the outdated system that we use and thus all the measuring cups and spoons I have are based on Cups, tablespoons, etc because…

Cottage cheese is a big one for me. Great by itself. I also like it on a baked potato. I used to smoother a baked potato with butter and sour cream, but now just have one topped with cottage cheese. Yummy and healthy.

I made a similar change about 2 months ago. The road bike FLIES down the road compared to my heavy old mountain bike (which I'll keep around for when I want to bike on rougher terrain.) Sure a lot easier to hang the road bike on the vertical racks in the storage area at work too.

Others in the house don't share my enthusiasm for a healthier lifestyle and we typically have lots of chips, cookies, pop, and other unhealthy items. I just have to use sheer will power.

For a long time (before dieting) I started off the day with lots of coffee (with loads of flavored Coffeemate) and then the rest of the day would just be lots of non-caffeine diet soda. Now it's black coffee in the morning and then nothing but plain water. Helps a lot if it is iced cold. I try to avoid any artificial…

For me, none of my traditional vices are a problem, but NUTS have become my biggest weakness latety. I took a cholesterol test a few months ago and found my LDL (bad) cholesterol was way down, but so was the HDL (Good) TO improve the HDL levels, I've been trying to eat more 'good' fats. (Fish, avocado, and nuts). I've been…

I won't put margarine on anything. Use butter and olive oil sparingly and just starting to use coconut oil.

I always bring plenty of healthy snacks each day to work. But working in a ice cream store would certainly be a strong test of anyone's will power.

Stuff I NEVER eat anymore: Soda pop. Haven't had an ounce of any soda (not even diet) since the first of the year. Flavored Coffeemate. That sweet creamy junk has 30-35 calories a tablespoon. Just drink all of my coffee black now. French fried potatoes. Love love them, but not good for me. Haven't had an order of fries all…

Down about 52 pounds since early December 2012 (36 since joining MFP) Someone asking what I had lost a few days ago said the next time I'm the gym to pickup some dumbbells (pair of 25s) so I can tell what I used to try to lug around. The lost weight sure makes the hot summer we are having more bareable.

Calories in biking depends a lot on where you are riding. Cruising along on flat roads at a steady pace won't consume the calories that climbing a steep hill or riding a mountain bike over rugged terrain. Also a lighter road bike is a big difference than riding a fat tire bike. I ride a road bike about 10 miles round trip…

Carbs from 'heavy' sources are what I have to avoid. I eat a LOT of fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Other than that, my carbs essentially consist of a bowl of old fashioned oatmeal in the morning, high quality whole grain bread in my sandwich for lunch, and a couple of times a week at dinner, I'll have a small…

Almost every morning I start with old fashioned oatmeal (steel oats just take far too long to cook) with fresh berries. A few times a month I'll have a bowl of whole grain high fiber cold cereal for a change of pace.

Lots of differing opinions on this sort of thing right now. But what I find unsettling is some of the companies are reluctant to label their products to indicate they contain GMOs. If GMOs are truly as safe as they claim they are, then why are they trying so hard to avoid telling us what we are buying and putting into our…

Effort in hiking depends largely upon the change in vertical. Big difference in traveling a few miles on flat terrain as opposed to hiking a steep trail to the top of a peak (which is what most of the trails here in Utah are like).

I take some of the dishes I make on a regular basis and create recipes. Saves lots of time on things I make all the time. I don't add the recipes to the general database (so as not to clutter up things) so I'm the only one that can add them to my food counters.

I often just thinly slice Zucchini, sprinkler it with some salt, pepper, and McMolly Butter, and steam it. After it's cooked, I stir in a little bit of Parmesan cheese.

Lots of water and lots of fresh veggies.

I feel it's safe to say that the overwhelming majority of health experts would consider losing weight so rapidly would be rather risky. Most suggest losing no more than a few pounds a week over a long period of time.

I find abs the most tedious of all my body parts to exercise. Really need to hit them more often.

One of my favorites. Coffeemate flavored creamer. 30-35 calories per tablespoon. Until I started drinking my coffee black I was easily consuming several 100 calories a day of that stuff.

My target is at the point where my BMI would be a bit below the overweight category and I have a little over 20 LBS to go. (When I started at the first of the year my weight was in the obese category so I'm definitely making progress.)

I can't think of getting up in the morning and recharging my body with a lot of black coffee and a hearty healthy breakfast.

Here in the Salt Lake area, our Frontrunner commuter trains have at least one car that has bike racks in them with seating on the other side of the aisle so you can watch your bike (or you can lock it to the rack if you want to sit on the higher level). You would think that Amtrak could do the same thing.

Far too low on protein for my preferences.

I'm not repulsed by fast food (the unhealthy type). I would just rather eat healthier choices that taste good and haven't had a burger or order of fries all year long. If I get down to where my BMI and body fat % are below the overweight category, then I might go back to the rare indulgence once in a while. Yeah it's not…

About 5-6 weeks ago, I started taking my bike to work and leaving the car behind. I pedal around 4.5 miles to the station to catch the commuter train which transports me about 20 miles to a station about 1/3 mile from the office (where they have a very nice secure shed with racks to hang your bike). The round trip (cycling…
