I ran my first half in July (training for another one in October). I feel I made one big mistake. Like many long races which start in the canyons here in Utah, a lot of the course was downhill. Once in the valley, other than a few gradual gentle hills, there was a stretch about one block long where there was a steep…

Been stated in many other threads, but if you're beginning on a treadmill with plans to move outside after a while, set the incline to 1-2% which makes changing to outdoors a lot easier.
-
What many recommend is to set the treadmill to a 1-2 % incline for a while. I made the switch to road running last spring. Now can't stand running on a treadmill.
-
So tedious running on treadmills, but with the days getting shorter it's either run in the dark and cold, or visit the gym.
-
Ditto on slowing down. Nearly every training program I've looked at emphasizes the longest runs of the week are supposed to be about endurance and not speed. For myself, ran a half in July, training for a half in October and potentially want to bump up to a full sometime in 2015.

I run right past a bakery (that makes very nice bread) many mornings and the smell of fresh baked bread can indeed be a distraction.

I'm 53 and until a couple of years ago, I hadn't run a continuous mile in about 30 years and couldn't run 100 yards without being completely gassed. Spent a year in the gym where my cardio days consisted of treadmill intervals (running no more than a minute or two between the walking breaks) and started a C25K program this…

Here in Salt Lake we have a few burger chains owned by Greek families and 2 of my favorites items to order there are Pastrami Burgers and Gyros. (Need a big bag of french fries with one of those of course)

I'm going through the same thing after finishing a half last Thursday. After taking Friday and Saturday off, I ran several miles on Sunday, spent a while strength training Monday, and ran a few miles this morning (Tuesday) and still can't get my speed up. Likely will need to take it easy for a few more days running just a…

Last week, completed one of my goals of finishing a half marathon. Really hit the wall the last couple of miles so right now my next goal is to train for another half in October (12 weeks away) and improve on my overall time and have something left in the tank for an good finishing push at the end of the race.

Usually the only woodland creatures (other than birds) I see when running on the Jordan River Parkway that runs through the entire length of the valley are deer (which I see rather frequently) although I did sight a fox a couple of months ago.

I lost almost 80 pounds during 2013 hitting the gym about 5-6 times a week where some days were intervals on the treadmill and other days were lifting. Eating was quite clean (healthy carbs, high protein, low fat, and very little in the way of 'junk'). Early 2014 I started running (did a Couch to 5K, then a bridge to 10K…

I completed my first half marathon yesterday. It was part of the Deseret News Classic which started as a marathon in 1970 (one of the oldest in the Western US). They added a 10K some time ago, added the half last year, and added a 5K this year. Takes place on Pioneer Day (July 24 which was a Thursday this year) and occurs…

LOL! Yeah my half marathon is tomorrow. Longest training run was 11 miles so tomorrow is just a few miles more. Biggest difference will be that I don't have to carry my own water or sports drink and at the end they have an assortment of goodies for the finishers. Plus the end of the race is along a parade route (parade…

Here in Salt Lake City, July 24 is Pioneer Day and they always have events including a parade, races (marathon, half, 10K, and 5K), fireworks at night, etc, on whatever the day of the week it falls on (unless it's a Sunday in which case it's moved to Monday). Curiously a few months ago when I was poking around various…

Interesting thread. I'm running my first half-marathon tomorrow morning. It's the Deseret News Classic. They've been doing a marathon since about 1970 but they only recently started having a half marathon. Last year there were over 900 in the half marathon and over 400 in the marathon which starts 30 minutes earlier and…

This is my first year doing any kind of serious running. Goal was to do a 5K in late winter, 10K in late spring, and a half in the summer. Did the 5K and 10K already and the half is next week.

Most mornings, I tend to get up a bit before 5 AM, use the bathroom, down some strong black coffee, have a breakfast (oatmeal with greek yogurt and blueberries most days) and then head out to start running about 6AM. Like many places in the Northern Hemisphere, its by far the coolest and most pleasant time of the day. (and…

Pretty much everything I've read emphasizes trying to simulate race conditions as closely as possible during training. Doing my first half next week and the race website says they'll have powerade every other aid station so during my longer training sessions, I've alternated water and powerade every few miles during those…

On the other hand, I remember one time reading someone's review of a half-marathon race where among many problems, one was that the course was not measured correctly and those with GPS devices said it was almost 15 miles.

Lost about 8 inches off my waist size and ended up donating a lot of pants/jeans to charity.

I'm in the last couple of weeks of Hal's beginning half marathon program. Last long run is Sunday. Then I start a taper for the race. Super stoked. To think that about a year ago I couldn't run a mile without being completely gassed.

Simply NO excuse at all for ever running out of water. Certainly could make it challenging for some to finish a race if resources like Sports drinks/gels run low but exercising without water, especially in hot/humid conditions could be very dangerous. Water is cheap and there should be a much larger supply than you could…

Some people really can have bad manners. I'm running my first half-marathon in a few weeks. There will be a marathon on the same day with same finishing area. Full marathon starts at 5:30 and half at 6:00 so a large number of the half entrants will finish long before the bulk of the full distance runners. I'll certainly be…

I just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Can call it anything you'd like and I won't be offended.

I try to go for pasta the night before a long run/race. That morning, I'll try to have some oatmeal with greek yogurt and berries a while before starting out.

I really like to travel light. Shorter runs it's usually just my GPS watch and car key if I didn't start off from home. (and clothing of course). Medium runs I'll sometimes carry a cell phone. Usually don't carry water with me at all. On my longest runs, I'll keep some water in the trunk of car and every few miles will…

LOL. Sometimes when running and it's getting warm, I'm grateful when I pass a home where their sprinklers near the sidewalk are on at that moment.

After completing C25K back in March, I'm now training for a half-marathon. On many runs, my first mile is the slowest before I start getting into my stride.

I walk my stepson's dog (weiner dog breed) every so often. He's good to run for about a couple hundred feet but then wants to stop, sniff, and mark every bush, hydrant, fence, street sign, tree, etc. I joke that it's good for interval training and that's about it.
