  • My standby for a long time has been old fashioned oatmeal, milk with a bit of protein powder mixed in, and fresh berries. Wash it down with a large cup of strong black coffee.
  • I went from 253 to about 175 between Dec 2012 and Jan 2014 by eating fairly cleanly, (high protein, low fat, healthy carbs), 6 days each week in the gym (some days lifting, other days intervals where the running intervals were fairly short). Started running in Jan (Cto5K, then bridge to 10K and now a month away from a…
  • Eat more nuts. Loaded with calories with a lot of them coming from protein and healthy fats.
  • Waiting until I hopefully finish a half-marathon in late July and go out and buy a 13.1 sticker and place it on my car. (Ran about 9 miles yesterday morning so I'm well on my way to getting there).
  • Too bad people can be so insensitive at times. I admire and respect anyone who is exercising (be it at the gym or out on a bike/jogging path or side of the road) no matter what their physical attributes are.
  • Trying mixing things up. Perhaps one day a week run intervals (alternating between 100-200 yards very fast, and then 100-200 yards at a much slower pace and do several cycles) and then another day run 2-3 miles at a very slow pace. Perhaps also mix in a hills day too. By changing things up you'll often be able to get your…
  • The last month we've generally been slightly below normal temps (5-10 most days) but now the heat is on the way and we're expected to be back to a bit above normal next week. (At least it's a DRY heat).
  • Almost all of my runs are early in the morning right at dawn (partly so I can get in my exercise before heading for work on weekdays, but also because it's cooler). We had a front come through a couple of days ago, giving our area some needed rain and the last couple of days were quite cool (about 20 degrees below normal)…
  • FWIW, on a morning run the other day, I heard a jogger steadily overtaking me from behind who eventually stormed past me. Turned out to be a young lady but I should note she did look to be about half my age (53).
  • And if I were going to make a list of songs to listen to while running or otherwise exercising, Springsteen's "Born to Run" would be near the top of the list!
  • Totally messed up that the outdated English system of measurements has ounces for volume and for weight. Simply stubborn stupidity that the US doesn't join the rest of the planet and convert to the metric system.
  • A few months ago I was starting my run and looking down at my GPS watch to make sure it was starting to track correctly, tripped over an uneven part of the sidewalk and landed on my knee and head. Ended up with a black eye that took a lot of explaining. Had to keep on saying "yeah you should have seen the other guy" when…
  • You have plenty of time to get in shape for a 5K in September (especially if you're fit enough to participate in Zumba) Running in 95 degrees isn't fun and certainly help if you can make the time to run earlier. On days that I run, I almost always do it first thing in the morning while it's still cool and after the run,…
  • After a year of running only on treadmills (mostly intervals) I moved over to running outside in late winter. Can't stand the thought of running on treadmills now and love outdoor running. Also love to run early in the morning at dawn so I can enjoy the coolest part of the day and see the sunrise.
  • Keep at it. I complete the program last winter and have now ran a 5K and later a 10K and now am training for a half marathon later this summer. To think I couldn't run more than about 200 yards at a time at this time last year.
  • I myself am training for my first HM in late July (essentially working Hal's beginning program). A bit on the fence on whether or not to try for a full in mid October. Likely going to be patient however. If the half goes well I'll likely take a few weeks off, and possibly just run a 10K or too this fall (or even run the HM…
  • After C2TK I moved on through a bridge to 10K and now halfway through a 12-week half-marathon plan. Registered to run a half-marathon in late July. (And to think I couldn't run more than about a mile without being totally gassed just about 6 months ago).
  • If you need to, work your way up from your current fitness level to where you can begin week 1, then take a while to get there. About 18 months ago, I was completely out of shape and if I had to run 100 yards to catch the train, I'd be desperately gasping and panting and my heart would be pounding. After a year of visiting…
  • If it's in a classroom (whether it be at an academic institution, gymnasium, or other place where there is someone sharing their advice/wisdom with the class) then talking while the instructor is talking to the class is simply bad manners. But if it's just out in the open gym area, other than being careful to not impede…
  • Late to enter this thread, but I'd agree that you should try to move forward gradually. After a year of running intervals 20-25 minutes (about 10 each running and fast walking on the treadmill) at a time a few times a week I started Couch to 5K last winter. Eventually moved on, did a 10K a month ago, and am now training…
  • Great stuff in this thread. I completed Couch to 5K in early March, progressed up to a 10K I ran in late April and am slowly building mileage in anticipation of a half-marathon in late July. (trying to stick with increasing my total weekly mileage by no more than about 10% each week) Right now I'm around 6 miles for my…
  • I need a couple of large strong cups of black coffee every single morning to get a jump start on the day whether I'm going out on a run or not. (Then am caffeine free the rest of the day). Unsure I'd make it a week or two without it during a pre-race taper but there are racers who do that then have some caffeine obn race…
  • Quality fresh fish gets more expensive every year it seems. Fresh berries can also get expensive when they aren't in season.
  • Losing a pound a week is just fine. Lose it much faster and it tends to come back.
  • The last place runner finishing a race had a superior performance to all those who didn't run at all.
  • Really starting to hate rest days. (My HM plan calls for 4 days running various levels of distance and effort, and a couple of cross/lifting and one rest day which is today) I'll go outside and walk around for a while, but just not the same.
  • 2 breakfasts this morning. 1. (When first out of bed) Half cup (before cooking) old fashioned oatmeal topped with fresh blueberries and blackberries and a small amount of milk. Cup of black coffee w/o sweetener. 2, (After a nice leisurely 3 mile jog in the rain). Slice of whole grain wheat toast topped with some all…
  • Transitioning from treadmill to outside is a lot easier if you've been running on an incline (about 1 to 2 pct). When I did my version of C25K last winter, I started on the treadmill and didn't start running outside until early March. Mid March I ran my first 5K and late April I ran a 10K. Now I do virtually all of my…
  • I ran my first 10K race a few weeks ago in a steady drizzle. Temperature was cool but not too cold, and the wind was fairly light. Lots of fun.
  • Better to be the last person across the finish line then to not run the race at all.
