Fasting is said to have some benefits. I do slightly modified 20/4 fasting myself. If it works for you, allows you to get that overall calorie deficit, and doesn't make you lethargic, go for it. But don't forget some exercise.

Well, I suppose the easiest fix would be for people to stop judging other people and what they've decided to do for their own health and what works for them. What appears to be the definition of a fad/extreme/quirky diet: Any diet someone doesn't happen to agree with, doesn't like, doesn't think they personally could…

I started my recent weight loss with the goal of getting healthy which included loosing a lot of weight. I started out sugar free /wheat free but have since progressed to just cutting those things way down while allowing a treat every now and then. It seems to be more sustainable - and enjoyable. I guess you could call it…

Not sure why, but I just as soon people at work not know or recognize my birthday in any way. I'd feel weird if they did. As for family members, I'm good with just a text message or a post on Facebook - don't really care much for cards. One tradition we do have is that each of us gets to pick a restaurant to eat at on our…

Just went through a 3 lb weight increase in less than 24 hours. Oddly enough, since the weight increase seems to be sticking around, I have to look at the initial low weight as the "odd ball" - I must have lost a bunch water somewhere.
-
It really depends on the place and on you, but for myself I'd try to keep the sugar grams out of the stratosphere. That would mean a diet drink of some kind - or water, while laying off the deserts. There will be some in the bun of whatever sandwich you eat, but that's not not too bad. I tend not to worry about the fat…

Lots of people loose lots of water weight when they first change their diet - especially folks that go low carb.

I don't know who "these people" are and I would be suspicious of anyone who said they lost that much weight in one year. Just recently I've been having to be satisfied with a half pound a week on average. Last week I added in some some weight training, so I'm not sure what will happen. 2 lbs per week is on the high end of…

My experience has been that I shot up a couple of pounds and it's taking several weeks to come back down. I feel your pain. :ohwell: You could always add in some intermittent fasting. I've added it to try to get over the hurdle.

Whether or not it's a bad thing is dependent on the individual and how it affects them. You can say it's not a bad thing, but that would only apply to you, not necessarily to anyone else. In my experience and the experience of many others, it most definitely is a bad thing, whether it be so because of it's high amount of…
-
The nice thing is, I get to decide what is "bad" for me, not someone else. For me, sugar is a useless, non-nutritional, high calorie carb that i just don't need, particularly in the huge quantities that many foods have in them. For me, it's a trigger food that greatly tempts me to eat more calories than I really need. If…

We could with lard or real butter - no vegetable oils or fake butter.

I try to keep my sugar grams (it is grams) under 10, including any natural sugars that show up in fruit. Sugar is the "bad guy" for a lot of people, even if it isn't for some others. For me, it's definitely a trigger to eat junk food so I avoid it. This means cutting out most boxed/shrink wrapped/processed foods because…

Well then it's a good thing I never claimed protein didn't elicit an insulin response, nor have I continued to "argue" over it, but since you seem comfortable pretending I did, I'll leave that to you. The point I was actually questioning, rather than the one you've just made up, is whether chicken causes the same insulin…

I don't understand what you're trying to say. There's tons of nutritional "information" out there, much of it conflicting and supported by "experts" and "studies". I'm all for people reading whatever they want and deciding what works best for them. In fact, I advocate that most of all - a person should do what works for…
-
I've plateaued myself - basically held the same weight for almost 3 weeks now. Frustrating but also expected.
-
Yep, and subsequently inundated with conflicting "expert" opinions all claiming to have "studies" to support those opinions. Perhaps, but didn't lend much support to the specific claim of chicken spiking insulin like sugar or refined flours. I suppose it could if it was coated with thick bbq sauce or lots of breading…

Since I don't believe it's the "common knowledge" you claim it to be, it hardly warrants a chuckle. Interesting article, though I couldn't figure out who the author was or what his/her creds were. At this point all that can be done is to add it to the ever increasing pile of "here's a study, there's a study, everywhere…

I'm a firm believer in letting each individual decide what is "fine" for them rather than others declaring what is fine for everyone else. For some people, carbs are a trigger food that leads to being more hungry and then over eating. For some people, sugar is a trigger food that leads to unhealthy binges. For some people,…
-
You'd have to provide evidence to support that claim. Every chart I've looked at has chicken way down on the chart. That of course refers to the chicken itself, not the sugary/floury things some people put on it, myself not being one of them.
-
If it spikes the blood sugar and thus insulin production, then I tend to avoid them. I may allow a cheat once in a great while though. Correction: I should have added, I tend to avoid them IF they aren't considered nutrient dense. For instance, I almost never eat things made of white refined flour and/or sugar. But I will…

Not much of a spirit person but I definitely agree the hardest thing about weight loss is the mental aspect. Mentally sticking to a diet long term and/or an exercise program - being extremely patient and not becoming frustrated - those are the big battles.

I can easily down 6-8 diet soda's a day (diet sunkist, coke zero, diet a&w). I experimented by stopping cold turkey for a couple weeks. Didn't feel any different at all so I went back to drinking as many as I wanted. Haven't seen any difference going back either. *shrug*
-
Definitely keeping the carbs lower, but I can't claim to be going keto. Sometimes I will go that low just because of what I've coincidentally chosen to eat that day, but it's not something I plan on. I'm almost always under 40 or 50 carbs though. Good luck to you and remember to be patient. Trying to lose weight WILL more…

Losing weight can be one of the most frustrating experiences, trying one's patience like nothing else. Advice? Acknowledge this and be aware of it going in. Learn to recognize the difference between cravings of the mind and actual hunger. Learn to recognize your relationship with food - do you eat to sustain yourself or do…

But he looks cute...

Except for potato's, corn, peas I never liked them either but I've found a way to handle a good amount of greens, including spinach. I stir fry them up into something like ground beef or chicken pieces, with a good amount of butter. I tear up all the greens, add in some peas and carrots, and once the beef is done I thrown…

Since I'm currently experimenting with intermittent fasting - fasting 20 hours, eating for 4 hours starting at 4pm - I have no breakfast. No lunch either - lol.

I'm over 50 with minimal health issues other than an arthritic knee, but as I was about 90 lbs overweight I decided I probably won't be getting away with it for much longer. Family history of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, etc.. Seeing that looming in my future just motivated me to go "uh-uh", not going through any of…

In other words, any way of eating someone doesn't like or agree with can be denigrated as a "fad" which is really not saying anything other than "I don't agree with your diet so I'll just demean your efforts it by calling it a fad". If it works for her, then THAT is what matters.
