It depends. If your water has a large amount of sodium in it, you definitely should keep track of it as you keep track of sodium in general. I'm lucky that it's not an issue with our tap water but a friend who lives on a well where she must heavily treat and soften her water avoids drinking it, in part because of its high…

The trick is to feel sated with fewer calories. This means aiming for foods that are less calorie-dense/nutrition-poor. For example, my ca. 350 calorie breakfast today of whole grain toast with avocado & turkey was far more satisfying than a 350 calorie glazed doughnut. A couple hours after the doughnut, I would be…

If you weigh 7 stone, that's only 98 pounds. Are you sure you need to lose weight? Unless you are very short, you are unlikely to have much in the way of fat to get rid of at that weight.

If you are truly hypothyroid and have type 2 diabetes, you should do what your doctor says and take any prescribed medications. I only have 1/2 my thyroid & it can't keep up anymore so I take a synthroid every day as the doctor prescribed. I also have my thyroid levels tested. For diabetes 2, I'm presently taking 2000 mg…

I like soy milk with the second choice being oat milk. Both are fairly neutral in flavor. Soy milk has the advantage of actually having ground up soy in it so has some protein.

When I am paying attention and keeping my calories limited, I try to keep variety at the forefront. This helps me enjoy the reduced amounts more. Today, for example, I tried avocado toast for breakfast (whole grain toast, guacamole, & turkey). It was a yummy high protein, high fiber, low fat breakfast. What's not to like?…

My dental hygienist noticed immediately when I switched from Diet Coke to fizzy water (unsweetened seltzers). Now, when I try a diet soda it tastes disgustingly chemical to me and I was a several-diet-coke-a-day junkie. My gums are healthier and my teeth are less stained. We finally broke down and got a SodaStream because…

Salt can have a big impact on water weight. I know that if I have a take-out Chinese meal I'll gain about 4 pounds over the next two days and pee them out over the next four. Normally, I eat a low salt diet.

Rubbing thighs are AWFUL. The solution may be underwear shaped like bicycle shorts. Just search "long leg briefs men" and you'll find a zillion of them. As a lady with thunder thighs might I point out that you have no idea how many women are hiding bicycle shorts under their skirts.

Don't "diet." "Dieting" is an attempt to apply a short term, unnatural (for the individual) way of eating to control energy consumption. On the other hand, we each have a diet we follow that results in either weight gain, maintenance or weight loss and affects our health. With very few exceptions, weight loss, gain and…

Here's a recipe for rhubarb ketchup I made up several-many years ago. It keeps well in the freezer or can be canned. https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/sauce-spread/dip/rhubarb-ketchup-catsup.html

I attribute much of this to the switch to a low-sodium diet. Many checkout counter magazine diets that promise huge weight loss in just a week assume they are switching folks from a high-sodium diet of processed foods to a low-sodium diet of fresh foods and veggies.

We had an expression in our family, "Oh, don't be an Uncle Jim!" Poor, dear, long dead Uncle Jim was renowned for forcing seconds and thirds on folks long after they thought their stomachs would explode. When someone got too pushy with the food, "Oh, don't be an Uncle Jim" did wonders. Guess it wouldn't work universally,…

For pre-menopause women, hormones can make a huge difference in water retention. If you are cycling, your weight is likely to as well. You may find weighing once a month at the same time in your cycle is more revealing of progress.

I did WW in the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, and the 2000s. Yes, each generation of it worked each time. And it became less prescriptive yet more complicated over time. Come on over to the CICO (calories in/calories out) side. It's very simple. Eat well but control your calories. Figure out a way to eat that is good for you. If…

Almond milk ruins a cup of coffee. Soy or oat milk are better when one oughtn't just break out the cream!

We buy sugar-free Ricola in bulk. A sugar-free cough drop can do a lot to quell hunger pangs for not much consumption.

Food diary is open. I'm working with delivered food from the community we live in and what we can order from the grocery store. If I eat fewer calories, I lose weight. If I eat fewer simple starches & sugars and avoid calorie-free sweeteners, my hunger pangs are under control. If I maintain low-salt habits, I don't hold a lot of water weight. If I exercise, I feel better but it can pique my appetite. All of the above, except the first sentence,…

Your calorie goal will go down automatically as you lose weight unless you manually set it. Is it possible you manually set your macros but not your calories?

Hand that person a 38-pound suitcase and tell them to carry it around for a day. Ask them how much they'd like to celebrate getting rid of it!! Congrats!! (Oh, and by the way, was your friend trying to channel my long dead mother when she said that?)

A good source for learning about "healthy" eating is Nutrition Source (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/) Start with their "Healthy Eating Plate" as guidance. You can then read about the different categories of food and nutrients. This would get you started.

Lost 5.4 pounds in 10 days. Fasting blood sugar down 126! Walked 6/10 days. I"ve been gone for about two years. I’ve been back at this for 1 week and lost 5 pounds. I know it won’t continue at that pace but it’s nice to have the reinforcement that I know how to do it. Food diary is open. I'm working with delivered food…

Make sure to choose the right option for your diary. If you measure when cooked make sure your chosen diary entry is for cooked. Same for raw, choose an entry for raw. This is true for volume as well as weight.

I"ve been gone for about two years. Glad to see the 10 day challenge is still here. Took my blood sugar a few days ago and it was well over 300! Gack!! No more fooling around pretending I am PRE-diabetic. I simply MUST at the tender age of 69 start paying attention. So, I'm going to do day/weight/waking blood sugar/walk…

I'm trying to limit carbs, too. I need to change what I snack on -- for example, low fat string cheese instead of cookies, plain yogurt instead of crackers & dip, etc. I've also been deciding to avoid starchy sides like mashed potatoes, macaroni, etc. and instead having a extra veg. Nutrition labels, and the mfp food…
