  • The only thing that causes weight gain is eating more calories than you expend on average. An apple or steak or a pad of butter will equally cause weight gain if they represent calories consumed in excess of your average expenditure. Eating the apple or steak or pad of butter in lieu of something with more calories and…
  • I'm 66 and losing weight at the rate of about a pound a week simply by trying to eat at a 500 calorie deficit. I've lost just over 30 pounds since June.
  • Thanks again, Cyranda! I’m in! Self-control flew right out the window last challenge and I fell into old habits of reckless eating late at night. That ends NOW! No eating after 9 p.m.! Pre-challenges starting weight = 283 BMI = 48.6 Round 8/1: HW 274.4 LW 269.8 MidW = 271.9 Round 9/2: HW 269.4 LW 266.8 MidW=268.1 Round…
  • Yes. I've taken antidepressants since Prozac (fluoxetine) was new and have noticed no effect on weight or appetite. I have taken Welbutrin (bupropion) as well for a couple decades and can say the same. If I eat at a 500 calorie/day deficit I lose a pound a week like clockwork. If I eat with reckless abandon, I gain.
  • No picture -- although I could take one of the pile of pots still awaiting scrubbing. We had chuck pot roast per request from DH. Lovely mashed spuds and gravy! The Lions still lost.
  • Pie crust only has transfats if it has hydrogenated ingredients. Made with butter, lard or even olive oil, it has no transfats. If you haven't had crust on top of a chicken pot pie made from chicken fat, you haven't lived!
  • If pentermine isn't working for you that is all the more argument for not taking it. It is basically speed so at it's base it is not "good for you" and should only be taken for a short time anyway. Don't stop taking it cold turkey, though, because you can get withdrawal symptoms. To lose weight, you "simply" need to…
  • Do what works for you. Some folks use a tape measure instead of a scale. Some folks use how their jeans fit. Daily weighing works for me as none of those other things would. But that's me not you. You do what works for you!

  • Here's the word from Harvard's NutritionSource https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/fats-and-cholesterol/: There is some debate whether limiting consumption of saturated fats is important but the science is really still out on that one. The American Heart Association recommends limiting…

  • If snacking while watching television is a problem, take up something to keep your hands busy like crochet, knitting, counted cross-stitch, etc. Boyfriend can be eating messy snacks but you won't want to get it all over your needlework. And note: needlework is not necessarily gender-linked. If you don't believe me, google…
  • No, you don't need to eat mostly boiled vegetables and meat or exercise 2-3 times a week. All you have to do is eat fewer calories than you burn each day. Sure. You can lose 33 pounds in six months but it will take dedication and may not be realistic if you only have 33 pounds to lose. I've lost that many in about 6 months…

  • Boy, oh, boy! Is that the hard one or what? I think we all have those times. I almost didn't finish last round because I didn't want to get on the scale to see the damage I'd done with a few days of post-diary snacking. But that's when it's most important to keep ourselves in check, eh?
  • Love it! I used to have a fridge magnet that said, "I'm not fat. I'm just short for my width." o:)
  • @kpondskponds I'm with the others on this. If you don't like oatmeal and bananas for breakfast, don't have it. There's nothing magic about it. Yes, oatmeal is full of fiber and bananas are full of nutrients but so are a lot of other foods. My usual breakfast has become eggs, heavy cream, & cheese microwaved into a fluffy…
  • What my doctor called "twilight" anesthesia is great for a colonoscopy. You recover much more rapidly and have less of an anesthesia hangover. You are unlikely to remember or feel much of anything. I asked my dr to let me watch on the monitor so I did get a glimpse of my innards but just a glimpse. For the most part, I was…
  • The most important thing is to lose weight. I've lost 30-ish pounds and my a1c was 6.0 at my recent dr's appt. He said that's the lowest it's been in years. I have over 100 pounds to go and expect my a1c to continue into normal range. Meanwhile, what others have said about concentrating on lean proteins and vegetables is…
  • Maintaining a healthy and varied population of gut bacteria is very important. Cleanses tend to damage that population. Cleanses are, in general, a bad idea. Save the cleansing for your post-50 decennial colonoscopies. (For my last colonoscopy, the anesthesiologist let me stay awake enough to get a glimpse of my colon on…

  • For those who were asking about how to manipulate stuff for posting. Well, each of us old hands has developed our own method. Here's mine. 1. I keep my squib as a Google doc. You could write it up on your computer using Word or whatever. I just happen to have it on my Google drive. 2. Each morning, I weigh myself and edit…
  • Ask your doctor for a referral to a registered dietition (not a "nutritionist") to make sure you are maintaining a diet that will improve your health while you lose the weight. I just looked up Contrave. It's a combination of bupropion (an anti-depressant) and naltrexone (an anti-addiction drug) and is the latest on only…
  • https://www.penzeys.com/ has lots of herb/spice mixes that are good on veggies. Also Mrs. Dash herb & garlic flavor. Get a good hard parmigiano reggiano and grate some with a microplane for a fluffy pile of parmesan that weighs far less than you'd expect. 1/4 oz. on a serving of veggies is plenty. Salsa. Here's a link with…

  • Thank you so much, Cyranda! This challenge has kept me going with no thoughts of quitting. I get so much out of reading everyone’s daily squibs! Thank you all for sharing. And persisting!! I’ve done 14 of these challenges which is exactly 20 weeks. I started MFP before joining the challenges so there’s no starting whoosh…
  • @midwesterner85 I figured there was more to the story. I'm glad you are pointing out that it's not just something one undertakes with a couple of OTC multi-vitamins. What you are doing may not be "the best" for long term (meaning decades) health. But the same can be said about what I am doing. We make choices and the best…
