  • Hal Higdon and Jeff Galloway are 2 who have written well-respected beginners plans. I like Galloway, as I found I could get my mileage up quickly with the walk breaks. The basics for both plans can be found for free on their websites, but they both have books too for more detail.
  • The joints are creaky and I didn't get a good night's sleep, so gym didn't happen this morning. I'll try to do some arms work later, but my knees need a break.

  • I don't know how long it's been since you gave birth, but at 4 months I started Insanity. It's intense, but I did it with the baby in the next room no problem.
  • Even if that's all your student's get out of your class, you are doing them a great service!
  • bump! want to find the best method
  • Mostly Skim, but I'm experimenting with almond milk and whole milk in my coffee. I'm not for or against any of it, factors that influence my decision are: taste, calories/fat, and price. I'd probably go mostly almond milk if I wasn't so cheap! If you're going for protien, stick with cow milk though.
  • This is helpful. Thanks!
  • San Diego!
  • Point taken! I was thinking about keeping a few days between heavy squats and long runs. The weight room is new to me, and I'm not really committed to anything yet except trying to improve upper body and getting myself in there at least 2x a week. I may add and drop certain parts of the routine until I get something that…
  • Hi All, Last week was rough! Between work, and just feeling exhausted I wasn't on at all and hardly exercised :frown: However, I did 12 mi on Saturday, rested on Sunday and 4 mi this morning. My husband and I will be in Miami in 4 weeks, and I'm determined to see a significant change before then! I'll be working out every…

  • We just got a food scale and I love it! Great for meat, chicken, chips. I've even started using it instead of measuring cups since it's a lot more accurate and I can just tare dish it's going into. Weighing it is actually really simple and less involved than you might think. I got my food scale online for 25$. It was the…
  • For those of you who have done "Insanity" and were overweight when you started, you'll know what I mean. You know the "IN-OUT ABS" move? The one where you jump from plank to a froggy position and back? I used to have to open my knees to accomodate the belly, and last night, magically, I did it right! Knees together! Mind…
  • Ok, so I didn't run yesterday...but I did Insanity! I'm back in business! Early calls at work mean I need to do evening workouts this week, which is fine. I'm trying to do TDEE-% now so my calories don't shoot up with a long run. I'm pushing through this little slump. I'm a little frustrated not having lost, but I'm not…

  • ^^^This! I only think it's not a troll because no brand of butter or coffee was offered up and OP apparently forgot the coconut oil.
  • I'd like to remind all the naysayers that the OP asked if it was POSSIBLE, and it ABSOLUTELY is! Being careful (walk breaks, following a respected training plan) is entirely different from being scared. Will OP get an amazing time, no, will he/she be hurting afterwards, yes, will he/she also likely not care about the pain…
  • Hmmm, what do you mean it "feels like" you're gaining? Have you? Have your measurements changed?
  • Don't listen to those who want to place their own intimidation on you! Yes, you can! It will be a ton of work, but you can do it. I suggest you check out Jeff Galloway's Run/walk method (p.s. I don't get a single cent from him and you can get the basics of his plan on his website for free). I did this for my first half…
  • No one has said this yet I don't think: Fat shaming doesn't work as a weight-loss motivator. However, the objective of most of these adds was not to "shame" people into losing weight (none, actually, in my opinion, even the gym and public health ad didn't have the "you should be ashamed you're not healthy/thin" tone).…
  • Agree with others. I thought it was interesting that you put "eating disorder" on your post. If you think hard about what triggers it, and stress or emotional difficulty are part of it, this may be a mental health issue. The way you described it though, it doesn't exactly sound psychological, and if you don't have poor…
  • Hi all, thanks for the input, Maureli, I'm in the same boat, Monday's weight is always up, and yes, it's very frustrating. So yesterday's workout didn't happen, this morning's didn't either, but I WILL run after work. It will involve a baby-jogger and probably not be very fast, but I've gotta just do it. In other news, the…

  • Agree with others. The reason is that light-moderate exercise slightly increases your body temp, creating a "fake fever". The reason your body gets a fever is to kill off bacteria or viruses. By simulating this, you can give your immune system a little help. However, if you just feel gross, especially with a real fever or…
  • Ok, wow, OP, do not forget that your dad is the parent (those who said he was a bad one or that this is for sure her business are treading on very thin ice, and I would be wary of taking their advice) and not respecting him will only cause problems and tension, you're making great health decisions now, sign of maturity, so…
  • That's right, the grannies know what's up! I love it how sometimes us "young people" whine and complain about how haaaaaard it is and that we caaaaan't seem to lose any weeeeeight, and then some unassuming jogger dude or kayaker lady or someone who has obviously been doing what they're doing for at least twice as long as…
  • I'm awful on weekends! And I'm always kicking myself monday. I realized I also don't drink enough water or eat enough fiber. My weigh in day is just goign to be monday.
  • Not sustainable, don't do it! Way better to eat less calorie-dense food. 4 oz of chicken breast prepared without oil (balsamic and grilled for me) costs you fewer calories than one Coca Cola, and it's pretty filling!
  • Thoughts: I don't think the oatmeal one is fat-shaming and I call "first world problems" on those who twist it that way. The only person this would possibly shame would be the person walking by and eating a bagel at that moment, and then only if they're overly self-conscious. The kids ones are tasteless! Poor kids in…

  • muscle pain (soreness), sure, joint pain, you're looking for trouble. New shoes and more varied exercise may be in order. Try something that is lower impact (elliptical trainer, swimming, more upper body workout, walking on softer surfaces like trails) on your knees and ankles and let them heal. Joint injury doesn't help…
  • I second the motion to check out galloway! He starts with that distance as the first long run, and slow is fine. This is a great goal!
