Anytime! I enjoy progressive discussion.

I may have linked these same exact articles in the low carb group. Supplemented with this http://sci-fit.net/2017/ketogenic-diet-fat-muscle-performance/

Wholeheartedly agree. In other news, I'm apparently a glutton for punishment. I mosey into various keto threads (or literally get "summoned" on occasion) and the misinformation is astounding. I'd rather practice Olympic lifts for 4 hours. Is that so much to ask for?

I'm familiar with Dom and his approach to keto, specifically as it relates to his cancer research. Even when asked, he's not going to deny biochemistry or thermodynamics. When in an energy deficit, the body will down regulate hormonal response to adjust for that.. because you're in a deficit. In the absence of dietary…

If you are in excellent health without any heritable disease risk factors, you're golden. The sentiment that anyone has achieved a goal weight and "enjoyed the results" is open to interpretation. For some it may mean that they're able to now perform physical activity as a priority or recreational enjoyment while pursuing…

Can you explain how fasting is anti-catabolic when you're fat adapted?
-
Those are good studies, but BMI =/= bf%. I can use myself as an example. I'm overweight in my BMI calculation (176.8 lbs and 5'9"), but 12.2% skulpt measured (which is probably 16-17% bf at the moment). Also, epidemiology / all-cause mortality rates have a wild range of factors from gender, socioeconomic status, activity…

Ah, it's the magic spell that keto dieters say when they want to claim that ketones are all the fuel they need and that fat adapted states of metabolism are the perfect fuel. Granted, there is some spontaneous reduction in appetite when people begin a ketogenic diet, and there's *some* merit to that claim (probably due to…

It's the petarded keto ideology that "fat is satiating" and to "eat fat to satiety." All it does is make you not trust a fart and make your sweat smell like butter.
-
You're correct that fasting would oxidize fat, putting you into a state of ketosis, but you also oxidize muscle putting you into a state of muscle wasting. If you want to "do keto" correctly, I would highly recommend that you don't follow the advice of something that sounds absurd, like starving yourself or putting butter…

I can only view optimal bf% from a metabolic standpoint, though that may include cardiovascular and oncology, depending on someone's definition. The optimal range of body fat is going to largely play into one's overall well-being, outlook on life, subjective happiness, etc. That said, when people are in the lean/athletic…

It's true I do advocate for a bit higher protein than most might be comfortable with (excluding anyone with kidney dysfunction), but primarily it's because there are some keto groups that actually will dissuade people to eat more than 40g of protein and proclaim (and I mean proclaim in the biblical sense) that it is…

The term "cheat" usually is associated with doing something "naughty" and some people take that as permission to go to a buffet and eat as much as they can at one time - which, let's be clear, can absolutely derail a week or two of hard work depending on the type of meal you eat. For a better term looking at the same meal,…

Martin Berkhan is largely considered the leader of popularizing the intermittent fasting and leangains approach. I would suggest starting there and soak up as much as you can. https://leangains.com/the-leangains-guide/ To answer the rest of your questions, IF is merely one tool (of many) in creating a calorie deficit for…

The problem with this is that too many fad keto dieters are only going to rely on % of their macro counts. Even normal dieters rely solely on % instead hard numbers, like actual grams of protein, fat, and carbs. And the sum of those macro grams is what contributes to the total number of calories.
-
Eat as much as you can that allows you to lose weight.

Minimum as in essential fatty acid? 1g from DHA/EPA is essential. But survivability =/= optimal. I generally just play it safe at 0.3g/lb as a floor for everyone. Though, some diets have thrived on 8g of fat per day. For comfortability, 0.5-1g/lb can still be effective for fat loss, assuming that’s the goal. Fiber is…

Completely correct and the caveat always lies in context. "High carb + high fat" is no bueno in the context of a caloric surplus. Follow the hierarchy for body composition in this order of importance: 1) Calculate your caloric needs based on your goal. For fat loss, select a deficit you are comfortable with. For mass gain,…

The bolded area is my main point. The misconception lies around the term "muscle sparing" as if it negates any lbm loss at all. Fung bastardized a study on starvation keto and falsely misinformed fasting practitioners that people actually gained muscle by eating nothing, and when pegged to cite his study, the rate of lbm…

I really have no idea why. Other than seeing my daily workouts and log streak every 5 days, there's nothing exciting on my feed either. I hardly close my diary except when I remember that button exists. Status updates are rare and are probably a trailing sh|tpost from other social media.
-
Not that I've noticed.. does my feed problem still happen on your end?
-
Were they keto? Lol.
-
I'm hardly as engaging on my wall feed as I am in the forums, so if anyone is under eating, it slips by me. I'm only aware if they post something that warrants a reason to even look at their diary. Or if I'm bored enough, I may randomly look at a diary or two.

Yes, it's absolutely reasonable to attribute the success of the diet to spontaneous reduced hunger. It results in a net calorie deficit, after all. Adherence to any diet is going to be the biggest success story in anyone's lives. The arguments across the interwebs are that everyone feels that their particular brand of…

The main point is that a ketogenic diet is not magic nor does it hold any advantage over any other diet for fat loss. For insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, it might be advantageous in that regard, but for normal metabolisms, any diet that produces a calorie deficit results in fat loss. Full stop. To fight against…

Funny enough, my ex was ana/bul and we met through MFP by chance. She posted something in the forums regarding super low calorie intake and fear of weight gain. I didn't s#it on her post, rather I just offered neutral advice. Long story short, I'm not very fond of supporting EDs myself. Lol.

There are different ways to interpret a study and people do just that. So you either see the study, agree that everyone loses fat and benefits from a healthier state, regardless if you are LC or LF ... or you look at what else was lost besides fat mass and further conclude that lbm loss also happens in a deficit ... or you…
-
That's actually a misconception many people have. "Muscle sparing" is in the context of starvation ketogenesis, and it really means that the rate of muscle breakdown is reduced .. not stopped. In other words, you are still wasting muscle tissue, just not as fast. That is the reason for ketone production in the first place,…

I forgot that @alteredstates175 was low carb before. It’s dependent on if the holiday break carryover included increased carbs, but if you were generally low carbing throughout the break, then reintroduced a higher intake of carbs during this deficit round, then yes, stored glycogen will carry water weight. 1g of glycogen…

#context I didn’t say it was pointless at all. There are benefits to being in ketosis. For one, as you’ve stated, it allows the body to preferentially utilize free fatty acids as an aerobic fuel source. Another is that it reduces an inflammatory response that causes insult to adipocytes. But for the purposes of fat loss,…
