  • I have been known to be pretty paranoid (I prefer to say "aware") about issues like this, also. I agree that something bad can happen even if you take all precautions so you have to figure out where to draw the line. I personally wouldn't bring a gun with me when running, but I do think mace is a good idea. If it's dark, I…
  • No argument there!
  • I'm doing the Columbus half!! Good luck with the full, and good luck to the OP, as well. You people are nuts ;)
  • Oh that's interesting! Thanks!! My family definitely loves to get everyone together. It's one of the few times a year we all see each other, so it's really special.
  • Out of curiousity - what is typical Canadian Thanksgiving food like? Like someone else already said, I will focus on the veggies and turkey (no gravy, but that's actually because I just don't like gravy), and eat small portions of everything else. I will eat whatever I want and not feel bad about it afterward! I think my…
  • I always just say that I'm trying to be a little more mindful about what I eat.
  • I'm 5'9", if I were trying to maintain my weight (at a normal weight), I think that would be about what I would aim for. I am not overly "active," but I do work out 3-5 times a week at a moderate intensity and walk my dog at least 30 minutes a day. For me, I'm lucky because I'm pretty tall and actually have a muscular…
  • I think you definitely should do this in person, first of all, but you know your relationship the best, so maybe your approach would work better for you guys, but I think most people would at least want to hear this face to face. I think it's a sign of respect to be able to broach potentially uncomfortable topics with…
  • I think resistance training of some sort is helpful, but I've found that I don't like heavy lifting as much as I like other forms of resistance training. I also have been running and walking more. I have noticed good results for myself (I never had a massive amount of weight to lose, but I have noticed myself becoming far…
  • For me, I am trying to lose some weight that I gained pretty recently, so luckily I don't seem to be getting the rude comments some of you guys are getting about getting "too thin" because I'm still not at the point where people aren't used to me being. However, I did have a trainer at my gym take me aside and ask if I'm…
  • I also <3 ramen noodles! I do try not to buy them very often because when I have them in the house, I want to eat them for like every meal, including breakfast. I typically put an egg in and maybe some veggies too, like spinach, broccoli or cauliflower. At least that way you get SOME nutrients....
  • I definitely did start running as a way to lose weight (because it is more difficult for me to simply eat less); however, when I do get in a good routine of running pretty regularly, I find that my eating habits tend to automatically become better. I make better choices because I don't want to mess up a run I have planned.…
  • Oh I TOTALLY log my walks with my dog unless I'm just kind of letting him meander around. I need all the extra calories I can get :) My "activity level" is set at sedentery, and a couple little walks like that really add up. Plus, the way my 110 pound dog "walks" I would probably feel justified counting it as an upper body…
  • Ditto! That would make me SO angry. I have a dog and love dogs, but HATE irresponsible dog owners!!
  • Wow - I think 3:30 am officially qualfies as "the middle of the night" for me! I am impressed. I try to get up and run/work out before work, which for me, is usually around 5:30 or 6. I always seem to be able to find an excuse to skip if I put it off until later in the day.
  • My main problem with it is that it's just not GOOD for you. There is little to no nutritional value in a slice of white bread, whereas, with whole wheat, you do at least get some nutrients and fiber. It's basically just empty calories.
  • I'm actually trying to do this too right now. (Sidenote- are you from Ohio? Because we had the Flying Pig in May that was almost all uphill and the Columbus Marathon is coming up in October. This is what I'm training for). I am planning to run three-four days a week, do yoga or a barre class one day and then lift/cross…
  • Well said! I couldn't have articulated this as well, but I wholly agree.
  • Thank you! I really appreciate this input. Since I'm relatively new to running, I don't quite have the fervor for outdoor running that some people tend to have, and I'm also fairly paranoid about being outside alone in the dark. And it's not because of lack of light - it's more because of rapists. Again, paranoid, I…
  • Thanks everyone! I will be sure to make more of an effort to get outside for some of my short runs as well, but I am encouraged that people overall do not seem as down on the treadmill as I expected. I really appreciate everyone's input!
  • Haha I actually think increasing fat helps me a lot to reduce hunger from increased exercise. However, I can't imagine butter in coffee!! I would eat more avocados, nuts, nut butters, lentils, beans, olive oil, etc. (healthy fats).
  • It sounds like you may have to be around her from time to time. Next time she does this, I would just take her aside from the group and tell her that it bothers you when she does that and that you consider her behavior childish and rude. You're not trying to shove your lifestyle choices in her face, why does she feel like…
  • Newfoundland :) He is a 110 pound lap dog!
  • DEFINITELY NOT LAME. A lot of people walk 5ks. Just make sure that you start toward the back because people who do run get kind of annoyed when slower people start in front of them. I've done a couple 5ks and there has always been a group of walkers.
  • I definitely think it's interesting that he notes now some female strength and fitness experts have a hard time relating to women who do not share the same aestetic in terms of how they want their bodies to look. I have definitely found that to be the case - I told my trainer that, although I respect women who get very…
  • I have been having the same problem recently!! In my experience, the extreme hunger lasts for a couple of days, but eventually will subside a bit on its own once your body gets used to the new activity level. Additionally, eating more healthy fats always seems to help me - try to eat things like peanut butter, olive oil,…
  • I never really had THAT bad of a problem with diet soda, but I very, very rarely drink it anymore now because once I started getting healthier, I noticed how disgusting it makes me feel when I do drink it. It makes my stomach hurt and I feel bloated and "blah." Maybe give it up for a week or so, then have one just to see…
  • I definitely don't think that the fat from bacon could qualify as a "healthy" fat, like the fats found in avocados or olive oil. But let's be real. Bacon is good for the soul and the taste buds :) Not everything can be a health food.
  • Ugh that's just so awful!! And it's worse your friend didn't stand up for you. I hope you know that this is more a commentary on those people than it is on you.
  • My dad once found a nail in a sandwich!! Luckily it was laying horizontally and not vertically...
