  • I agree with most of the posters. I'm 5'0" and lost 40 lbs on about 1200 not usually eating back exercise. When I ate more veggies and other low GI carbs (like sweet potato, low carb bread, beans, yogurt) then I lost weight. Now that I'm trying to maintain and adding too many sweets back, I'm struggling. Meat and fish are…
  • You could even use plain yogurt instead of mayo and then it would be even more nutritious.
  • I've kept them over a week, but I used egg beaters or liquid egg whites. They are a staple of South Beach Phase 1.
  • Grand Tetons, Glacier National Park, Bryce Canyon, Denali in the USA
  • South beach and atkins consider net carbs -- where you subtract fiber from carbs to get net carbs. That way you can eat more veggies and high fiber items, despite the carbs when you are totalling your carbs for the day.
  • Don't recommend duck boots -- they are rubber so become a feet sauna if you are exercising. You want boots that are breathable/waterproof with goretex. Merrills have a lot of options. Keens are sized European so are harder to fit for some feet, in my opinion.
  • There are lots of training plans, but you should find one that includes track speed work to increase your speed. Highly recommend you gradually increase your training pace and distance or else it is very easy to get overtraining injuries. In addition, if you start sprinting without a good base, and a good warmup, you may…
  • Make your own goal that is realistic but a stretch... i.e. to run the whole way without walking. Or to pick up the pace for 2 minutes every 10 minutes. You can't get fit in a week, and diet doesn't really affect a 5k the way it might a marathon. Make sure you eat and drink something before hand and don't go wild afterward…
  • Ships usually charge a lot for wifi and require a password. You should also disable network connection because it will drain your battery to keep trying to connect if you don't want it to, or only when you want to pay for connecting to wifi for checking emails every so often.
  • in CA it's soda, subs, and what are fireflies except in movies?
  • The British swear that a hot cuppa tea (from the colonials in hot/humid countries) helps cool you down better than cold water. Hot - cold -- whatever gets you drinking more water.
  • You normally shouldn't eat at BMR, you should eat at TDEE - minus some percent to lose weight. Unfortunately the smaller you are, the closer the numbers for BMR and TDEE are. In some cases, a really small person, TDEE-20% could be less than BMR. In that case you should look at customizing your goal. Check out the TDEE…

  • Johnson & Johnson first aid creme has a paraffin base so actually works well as an anti-chafing creme and is cheaper than Body Glide. I haven't tried deodorant though. Vaseline actually made the chafing worse for me because it would make my thighs stick together. For exercise I wear long shorts but it's harder to find…
  • Add me if you'd like. There are lots of different ideas, but I found that it's all in moderation. I ate fewer high Glycemic Index food (white starch, sugar) and could eat a higher volume of food on a daily basis to stay within my goal. Maintenance is hard for me -- I haven't gotten a balance quite right yet.
  • Okay, I follow a mix of the two camps espoused here. Track everything for a while to see what you are really eating. When I was successful losing weight, I restricted high glycemic index (GI) foods (high sugar, high starch - "white" food) because when I ate lower GI foods I felt more satiated on the same number of…
  • I consider myself a runner -- for nearly 40 years -- and I've rarely ever been able to run more than 6.0 miles per hour. Now I'm running half marathons at 12:30-13 minutes per mile average. I've never been fast -- even my mile isn't much more than 5.5 mph on a track. One suggestion -- your running pace for building stamina…
  • Did the 2014 Tinkerbell as my first half marathon -- first long race after a long racing layoff. I am signed up for Avengers in Nov 2014, Star Wars Jan 2015 and Tinkerbell 2015 at WDW. I live in San Diego hence more of them at Disneyland. Any questions feel free to ask -- I've done 5 Half races this year so far -- I've…
  • I'm not an expert but I've been running for a long time -- 40 or so years. What you experienced was not unusual. I ran Saturday 3 miles on the treadmill and a moderate pace for me, felt sluggish -- then Sunday I ran 6 miles outside with hills and felt pretty good -- then Monday I ran 3 miles and felt really good. Who…
  • Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I think
  • Or a roller with a handle called "the stick." There are many static calf stretches but recommend you do them after your run when your muscles are warm than before the run. You can google "active calf stretch" and find ones that are better for before exercise since you are moving when you do them . The other thing I often…
  • Some weeks I pre-make mini-omelettes to take with me to work. Some weeks I pre-make oatmeal and then put it in 1 cup containers. I try to make a week's worth of cooked breakfasts on Sunday that I can take to work and reheat. I also eat greek yoghurt daily.
  • I just ran the San Diego Half Marathon and as my pace slowed near the end of the race, I found myself being passed by a lot of people who were a lot heavier than me. I'm more a turtle than a hare myself, but I can't imagine doing so well at my former weight and even more. If you want to start running, it starts with a few…
  • Personally, when I was losing weight, I did not eat most of my exercise calories back (because that calculation is relatively inaccurate compared to food calories). Then when I got to maintenance I reduced my exercise (which put me at less of a deficit) AND added calories. Because I am small and older, my TDEE is pretty…
  • around 28, but I'm 54 now and still don't have that many. Thanks Mom.
  • Couple of thoughts here from a long time runner.... 1 -- warm up by a walk before stretching or do dynamic stretches. Static stretches, especially on cold musles, are discouraged nowadays. There are also such thing as dynamic stretches that my chiropractor suggested. I do them for hamstring but there are dynamic calf…
  • I've been a running shoe-aholic for the 35+ years I've been running. The right shoes shouldn't be painful -- I can tell within 10 miles that I'm in the wrong shoes because something new hurts. I have to balance between the cushion that I want and the stability that I need. I like to run in different shoes on different…
  • How did your race go? Please tell us. Thanks!
  • Have run several half marathons this year.... Don't run and drink at same time... walk. Inhaling water down the wrong pipe is easy to do when you're running. If there is water and gel at a stop, save the water to drink after you eat the gel -- sometimes gel doesn't go down as easy as you'd like but washing it down with…
  • People's republic of California had it for a short time but it got superseded by a federal law not requiring it. California law mandated it for restaurants with over a certain number of stores, as not to impact small business too much. I think Cheesecake Factory's impulse sales went down when they had to post 1000-1600…
  • That's what helped me lose the weight -- if I mostly avoid white carbs I feel more full with the same level of calories and am less likely to binge. Last month or two I've gone away from what got me here and am starting to add weight. I need to get back to only eating my favorite ones in moderation, not just because they…
