  • I'm the same way - I get more than enough protein in my daily eating from whole foods. No matter how you parse it, protein powder supplements are a processed food. One of the main aspects of this lifestyle is avoiding non-whole foods, and when you consider that most protein supplements are made from whey (a byproduct from…
  • Dunno. When I get the REAL flu or cold, I often feel achiness all over, especially in my lower back.
  • One of the things to keep in mind, especially when talking about processes in biology, is the 'law of diminishing returns' (or the '80/20' rule). Even though there are a bunch of modifiers to the rule "calories=calories", those modifiers are really minor to the basic rule. Most health writers (including our paleo/primal…
  • Well, if you are in the first couple of weeks in Atkins, it's what we all call the 'carb flu'. If you are switching from Atkins TO primal, the carb deprivation shouldn't be as extreme - plus you've already ridden most of it out. It should be almost over. ;)
  • Good question; one I can't answer because I follow 'Diet Evolution' rather than Paleo. DE, though basically paleo/primal, takes a dimmer view of sugars and starches than both Paleo and Primal.
  • Apparently rapini and broccoli rabe describe the same thing... And broccolini is sold as the stalk/flower without the leaves...
  • Yesterday: two fried (in goat butter) eggs over a sliced avocado seasoned with Mrs. Dash Chili Lime seasoning. Today: Side pork (unbrined, uncured bacon) and two fried eggs. The eggs were cook in goat butter, and the bacon fat (from pastured pigs) was saved for future use.
  • I'm not sure how true this is - at least from my own experience. My dogs would eat their feces from time to time, but since I've switched them to a no-grains diet - I haven't seen that happening. I suspect that, since the grains in their food are largely indigestible, their poop still smelled a lot like the food going in,…
  • If a person does not have an eating disorder, they can do paleo/primal without counting calories. Since I am prone to binge eating, I do count calories - some days, all that stops me from raiding the larder is thet I'm 'out of calories' on MFP. ;)
  • Rapini is also known as Broccoli Rabe or Broccolini... It basically is like broccoli, more stalk and fewer flowers, but it has a mustardy note. It can be used in any recipe that calls for broccoli.
  • Fair enough. :) I guess I had a similar plan when I started; it was in the book I bought, 'Diet Evolution'. Online assistance isn't any different...
  • 'Net carbs' is an construct of the Atkins-style diets. It allows people to think they are doing better carb-wise than they really are. Carbs are carbs, and sugar is just another carb. It's all about insulin, remember? Sugars are quickly converted to glucose and have to be dealt with by the body, using insulin. Other carbs…
  • Paying for recipes? O.o
  • Keep in mind that raw is better that roasted (roasting changes the composition of the oils, increasing the omega 6s), and unsalted is better than salted.
  • It sometimes can take a few weeks until your body switches over to burning fat as a fuel instead of looking for carbs first. Just make sure you're not also trying to be low-fat as well - having enough fat as part of your diet will aid in the transition. Hang in there! :)
  • Fats, mostly. Have an avocado with the bacon/eggs, or added to the salad. Extra olive oil on the salad. Nuts for a snack. Things like that.
  • Check page 2 of this thread - I left a 'pizza' recipe that took care of it for me. If you are jonesing over the crust tho, then the prob isn't pizza per se - it's the crust you miss. ;)
  • Ask him to move it into the boudoir? *ducks*
  • Actually, this is a money saver I forgot to mention - buying a chest freezer. Yeah, it's a few hundred bucks investment, but it pays off. As mikebyron mentioned, when you buy meat grown for you, you usually have to buy a half or a whole cow/pig/whatever - which can add up to hundreds of pounds of protein. It may cost me a…
  • Yeah, it's expensive - but it's not 'extortionate'. I buy my grass-fed beef from a neighbor who raises and butchers it for me, and I'm well aware of the costs involved - the biggest one being (at least around here) that alfalfa has to be bought during the summer months once the grass on his hills die. Buying alfalfa is…
  • Point'em at this next time.... ;) http://www.complete-strength-training.com/images/paleo-food-paleolithic-nutrition-foodpyramid-1.jpg
  • It's kinda like saying 'baptist/methodist' - there are a few points of doctrine that are different, but most of it is one and the same. I've just gotten used to typing primal/paleo, and use one or the other if I'm referring to a specific camp.
  • Well, appearance aside (what, you don't like the way I look??), it was the slogan I was posting. I'd like to have a bumper sticker that says that.
  • If you have a dutch oven, you can slow cook big pieces of meat in the oven (like pulled pork, braised short ribs, or pot roasts). The recipes I use call for about 5# of meat, have relatively short setup times, sit in the oven for hours (allowing you to focus on 'other things') and can be divvied up into several portions.
  • Personally, I think it creates the wrong impression of what paleo/primal is all about.
  • I have to take issue with this representation of paleo/primal. A nutritional analysis of what gorillas eat show that it is only 9% protein. Their diet is essentially vegetarian, with their protein coming mostly from the grubs and larvae attached to the vegetation they eat. While there ARE apes who are more omnivorous -…
  • Best. Responses. Evar. :D These are quotes we all should memorize and use - they are word 'pictures' worth a thousand more mundane words...
  • Every tahini I've had was made from sesame seeds.
  • I suppose so. I'm not big into training so someone more knowledgeable in this area would have to say. But it seems I've read something to that effect. ;)
