  • Although a lot of paleo/primals use sweet potatoes as a way to sneak sugar into their eating, if you're not really into eating them - good. Roots in general are carb and starch heavy, and provoke an insulin response without a lot of nutrition to show for it. Since a few of the 'colored' roots have antioxidant properties…
  • While fresh tomatoes is optimal, canned is OK. I use Muir Glen organic diced tomatoes, because they are fire-roasted and add an extra flavor note. While my Gold Rush chili if significantly different (it is Texas-style), your's looks good to go!
  • We use light coconut milk, which remains liquid in the fridge. We pour it into a dispenser that can be shaken, and then use it in coffee or whatever.
  • I've never heard of coffee causing an insulin spike - maybe someone else has knowledge of that. I already limit myself to one cup a day - but that's more for a medical issue I have.
  • Is there such a thing as too much protein?? When a cow is sitting on your chest - YES.
  • Depends on how hard your workouts are. Normal workouts, I'd add some fat. If you are doing extreme, then some additional carbs might be needed if you 'hit the wall'. The carbs should be from leafy greens, though - not extra fruit.
  • You can eat some fruit - just don't overdo it. Berries are best, not more than a cup per day. They are low in sugar, and high in antioxidants. I have no problem including a cup a day and staying under 100g carbs.
  • Well, if you are eating truly paleo/primal, avoiding grains and sugars - there shouldn't be any insulin spikes or dips to worry about. You get those as a part of a 'normal' diet. Your diet should be low carb - with those carbs coming mostly from leafy green sources. Roots should be avoided; the healthiest roots like sweet…
  • Keep in mind traditional names and marketing gobbledegook.... Coconut milk is traditionally the liquid you get when you press the flesh of a fresh coconut. This is what comes in a can. It can either come 'whole' (with 150cals per 1/3 cup) or 'light' (50cals per 1/3 cup). The light milk is made either by a second pressing…
  • The only downside to cashews (compared to other nuts) is that they are higher in omega 6 and sugars that most other nuts. If the choice is cashews or M&Ms - take the cashews. If the choice is cashews or almonds - go almonds.
  • Glad to be of service! ;) You betcha. ;) It's not that peanuts (and PB) are inherently evil - it's that there are so many better choices. If you are getting an all-natural PB (just ground peanuts and maybe a little added oil - but no sugar) it's definitely better than scarfing on some fruit rollups. But if you are buying…
  • Worth mentioning: in paleo, fat is not the enemy - but the WRONG kind of fat CAN be. Paleo does not use dairy; primal does - but even then, it needs to maximize the omega 3 factor. If you use cow dairy, it should be made from raw milk (not pasteurized). Personally, I use goat and sheep dairy - better digestibility, and…
  • Well, it's pretty well known in the primal/paleo community that 100-150g carbs daily is for weight maintenance; if you want to lose weight, it needs to be in the 50-100g daily range. Ultimately, yes. But more importantly is what you are eating. Grains and sugars both cause the body to experience inflammation, and insulin…
  • You'll get a lot of argument from the folks who like to use it to make primal/paleo 'cheats', but all of the sugars (agave, honey, yacon) should be used sparingly if at all. The primal/paleo lifestyle is eating in a way to minimize/avoid insulin spikes, insulin resistance, metabolic disease, and type 2 diabetes - all of…
  • Yes - but try to save the grease from grass-fed animals to maximize the omega 3 aspect of it. That said, I do have an old-fashioned aluminum canister like my mom had (found it on ebay) to keep my bacon drippings in.... :)

  • The bolded part needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Junk food made with healthy ingredients is still...junk food!
  • Safflower oil is good in most ways, but is high in Omega 6. Coconut oil: refined is OK, but EV is even better.

  • Great post! ^^^
  • Food is Power. It amuses me to remember that in the 'Omen' movies (from the '60s/'70s) Damien became the Antichrist only after he cornered and controlled the world's food resources....
  • They're always going to come up with names that are marketable. If anyone asks, I just tell them I eat 'hunter/gatherer'-style. Look at it this way. The world is burdened with massive overpopulation. What enabled it to happen? That's right - the development of agriculture! This ONE event made enough calories available so…
  • I'll play. I call myself a "paleolibertarian" on some days; a "Goldwater Conservative" on others. Friends often refer to me as a "redneck hippie". I have a healthy distrust of the government on most issues - when the liberals are in power, they want to steal our freedoms; when the conservatives are, they just want to pick…
  • Although gluten is a large reason why grains are bad, it's not the only reason. Grain-based beverages in general are out.
  • hadn't thought to ask this but: what are you training FOR? If you are a high-level athlete, then most of our advice may not apply, because your energy draw while competing might be way out there. But if you are a 'regular' exerciser, I still think the trainer is giving you bum advice - or at the very least, it's advice…
  • Good point! Although I did have to reformulate my Gold Rush Chili to fit paleo/primal guidelines, beans were never in there since I sometimes enter chili cookoffs. The one poster who mentioned bulking up on chilis/onions and mushrooms has a good idea. I now use 4 different chilis (spreads the burn in the mouth and deepens…
  • While it is still true that the 'bad' chemicals are mostly gone after soaking and cooking (a similar process occurs with grains as well), what still remains is a foodstuff that contains too many carbs and sugars to be on the paleo/primal plate. Whether one is losing weight or not, a hunter/gatherer diet is low-carb, and…
  • I'd verify first if the weight gain isn't cyclic water gain. It affects my wife by 2-3 pounds every month...
  • My wife felt that way. One day she tried using some light coconut milk from Trader Joe (in the can) as a replacement, and never looked back. Dust it with some cinnamon, and she's good to go!
  • It's kinda like asking various churches "is dancing a sin?"... :) The paleo folks don't do dairy. Primal folks do - within reason. Some of us kinda fudge the answer.... In my case, we don't use cow dairy - not only are there digestibility issues, but it's just too damned difficult to weed through the misuse of…
  • Added!
  • For me, it kind of depends on the food. If I fry an egg and use a tablespoon of butter, I'll record 1/2 tablespoon - it's obvious that at least as much butter remained in the pan as stayed on the egg. If I coat the bottom of my cast iron skillet with some baconfat before throwing on a steak, I don't record it - because at…
