We've had big windstorms and freezing cold winter weather where I live, lots of icy parking lots and slippery slopes. I bought boots that have studs built into them, totally impressed and wearing them everywhere! Except.....at my own home I stepped outside to feed the birds on my deck and went sailing down the steps,…

A coworker who hadn't seen me in 4 months said I was her hero! Am around 40 pounds down, long way to go but feeling more determined with comments like these! And determined not to backslide.

Working at a snail's pace at decluttering my bedroom. Found some favorite clothes I haven't worn in a long time because they were too small. But yay, some of them fit me again now! Free "new" clothes. Kept me from eating a second helping of my yummy dinner so I can forge ahead....

I shattered a knee cap a few years ago. I like exercise videos to follow if I am at home, but many of them incorporate squats, which are painful to my knee. I have been working on doing the routines with an alternate move but throwing in a few of the squats to try and reap the benefits. I am noticing that the muscles…

I zero'd in on this subject! OP, yes, they can be so painful!!!! You were writing my experience, ugh. I tend to run low on Magnesium so have that covered with supplements and diet. My lower legs now have a slight tendency to swell if I stand for long periods of time, so I've bought new socks that are "diabetic" socks, they…

Steve, so sorry to hear that things are not going smoothly for you and your wife. She is probably still so overwhelmed with what is happening to her, feels that everyone is pressuring her, and struggling with her loss of independence and control of her life. And not feeling well and in pain on top of it. And as her…

So true!I have more energy, and was just thinking today how every little step of success brings on the determination towards further success! Motivated to continue this "feel good" attitude!

tnh2o: What a beautiful photo! You'd never know the tiny pests were there to disturb the calm and serene setting.

Good idea to see a counselor, Steve. Someone you can unload onto should help tremendously. Being a caregiver to someone who has not adjusted to their situation can be so stressful. You want to help all you can, but also keep your own sanity. I'm glad she's home, and hope things can improve for both of you. Hugs.

That's good news Steve! And I see your sense of humor has survived too! Both of you will be more relaxed just being home together, back to some semblance of routine and familiarity. I have no excuse like you do, but have had a day here and there of wanting to eat everything I could find to munch on. I think it's a…

Leaving soon for a remote, off-grid (no communication) bush camp. Will be lots of physical work-and play. Will continue CICO. Goal will be that when I check back in later I am still on a downward and healthier status. Working in the outdoors can really increase your appetite, so hopefully I can resist second helpings!…

I go in spurts of weight loss, with a few backward slides here and there. The hardest thing is DAY !, making it through the first committed day of being serious about my health. After I make it through the first day, I find it easier as I have tucked one successful day away. The more of those successful days following…

Steve-good to hear positive news of your wife, and that her pain has diminished. Being back in your own home will help so much with the stress of all this. Sending daily hugs.

Steve-sounds like the last couple days have been a little upbeat for both of you. Hope it continues, one day at a time. Keep up those dog walks, they can be refreshing and helpful right now. Glad you are taking the time to take care of yourself too. Hugs to both of you.

You're welcome to save it, thank you! I'm happy to know someone enjoys it! :)

This too! Sometimes when I pick up something heavy like a big bag of dogfood, or a bucket of cat litter, I think about it's weight, and then think about having to carry it around with me, every day, all the time. How it can make my back ache, my knees protest, and slow me down when I move. And then how wonderful it feels…

Hugs to you and your wife, Steve. Here is an Alaskan sunrise for both of you, to maybe help you think about something calming and peaceful while you both start this next step in your lives.

Hi! If your dad spends time on computers, try introducing him to MFP, and to this group thread. Maybe seeing others at his stage in life being active, working on improving their health, might inspire him, and bring a few new friends his way. A healthy lifestyle makes many a person happier emotionally, too! It's wonderful…

Steve-wishing you and your wife all the strength, prayers and hugs as you start navigating this difficult path. As you give, give and give more to help your wife, please remember to take care of yourself too. You have been a big player in cheering fellow MFP'rs on here, and we hope to return that support to you. Even if…

alteredsteve175 Hope things settle down for you! Vent as much as you need to, we are here to listen! And even distract you if that helps :)

Reading all the retirement posts! I'm still working, just as a casual. But they seem to need me a lot. I may have several days off, then work several days in a row. Medical field. I told them no night shifts, no standby ER call, and it has been wonderful to almost call the shots of when I will work, and when I don't want…

Thank you mssue18 and Gisel2015 for taking the time to share thoughts and sources with me, I really appreciate it. Hoping this challenge will be beneficial to both of us down the road, especially for my friend.

I'm obviously here because I have way too much clutter in my house and am appreciating all the comments and interactions from others. My main personal problem is an emotional connection to inanimate objects, probably familial as my mother was the same. She was a child of the Depression, and saved everything because it…

The Ambrosia salads were a staple of huge family reunions when i was a child. They threw shredded coconut, marshmallows, fruit cocktail, chopped apples, mayo, whipped cream etc in it. My siblings and I all fought over who could get the cherries out of it. I'd probably still eat it if I were at a gathering, but will never…

Family are tough-the people who are supposed to love you the most are sometimes the worst! If all they can talk about is how you look, how much you weigh, or any bad habits they think you have, maybe you should try walking away from them, with a comment that when they are interested in you as a person, what you do, what…

I second Leslie Sansone. Her 3 mile walk endorsed by American Heart Association helped me recover from a shattered knee. Its a great beginning until you build up endurance. She has several other ones that use arm bands. They are free on YouTube, don't require much space.

When I was a teen (eons ago) my high school had a program where you could work for a free lunch by being a cafeteria food server. Those of us who couldn't afford to pay for lunches did this. The milk machine was the elite job, haha. Anyway, the head woman employed by the school cafeteria was this incredible older lady who…

Thank you for the info! Will have to try these. I guess almost anything you would put rice, lentils, couscous, quinoa with would work, never thought of that.

Knee injuries of any kind usually bring on arthritic changes earlier. I shattered my kneecap 3 years ago, it was surgically repaired, I have 2 screws in it. With great physical therapy, I healed well, and was able to do a 5K at 5 months post op! I work in a winter job where I am on my feet a lot but not moving around much.…
