I like vodka and diet tonic or cosmos made with light cranberry, but it's Christmas and I usually just relax and go with the flow. I will pretty much have whatever is on offer....except beer....I don't like beer....and I'm an Aussie. :p

Standard low carber response. No to pretty much all of it. Weight loss can occur without keeping carbs low, avoiding processed foods, and home cooking.

Where did these 'recommendations' come from? They sound a bit silly. If you want yogurt, plenty of yogurts are low or lactose free. Check for lactase as an ingredient and if you see it, it will mean that the lactose has been broken down. Why do you need to supplement with vit c and folate if you have yogurt and why is…

Thank you for such an inspirational post Ejourneys.

Off to the gym and then to the supermarket to buy the things I need to make those brown butter salted snickerdoodles. I'll post a pic to share my success (or failure) if I can figure out how to do it.

Thank you for posting this. I have noticed that the standard MFP advice for diabetes and pre-diabetes seems to be to go law carb and I strongly believe that it's definitely not the only way to go.

That made me heave

I use beans to replace 3 eggs and 200g of butter that the mix uses. It's a huge calorie saving. For me, it's really about the calories, not the carbs. They're something I have as an infrequent treat.

I'm not a low carber but I use this bread because it helps keep my carbs around 40ish%. hermanbrot.com.au/low-carbohydrate.php I'm in Australia, but perhaps there's something similar where you are from? Each slice has around 2g of carbs and 12g of protein. It contains wheat and soy proteins, soy meal, linseed, sunflower…

I make them with a packet chocolate brownie mix by replacing 3 eggs and 200g of butter with a can of beans (which I rinse really well, add back water into the can and blend until liquid). It results in a huge chocolate fudgey brownie for 140 cals Nobody has been able to tell the difference so far.

Fruit (pie fruit, tinned in juice and fresh), veges; chicken and fish (frozen crumbed fillets usually); eggs; lactose free plain greek style yogurt (breaking the lactose molecule makes it mildly sweet); low carb, high protein bread; protein bars; peanut butter and vegemite; Laughing cow cheese to use as spread; avocado to…

Yuck! It makes me want to delete my LinkedIn, FB and ResearchGate accounts.

I agree. You really need to get personalised advice from a clinician who knows your medical and personal situation.

Add a little bit of melted butter and lemon or lime juice. Make up a packet sauce mix eg. Cheese or white. Even better, make your own Add to the meat sauce for lasagne Use in stir fries. I use fresh veg as well as sometimes frozen doesn't have the crunchy texture I like Interested to hear other suggestions

Lol. Certainly see the doctor to have a health check and clearance for exercise, but most GPs have very basic nutrition training, and from my experience, can give some terrible advice (eg. fad diets).

^^^this first! then what AJ_G said. If you have an understanding of where your calories are coming from in your current diet (including bread if you like it) and then you calculate the amount of calories you should be having to lose weight (TDEE less 15-20%), you can decide where you can modify your current diet to suit.…

I like vodka and diet tonic or a cosmopolitan made from vodka, light cranberry and a splash of Cointreau shaken with ice. The mixers are basically 0 cals so it's just the cals of the spirits.

Oh wow. They're impressive!

Interesting because red meat is believed to be inflammatory. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24284436

Avoiding seeds is no longer considered necessary for diverticulitis. It's also recommended to eat high fibre except during a flare up, when low fibre is advised. This information is what a dietitian would recommend based on latest research.

Oh that's good. They should be able to help you figure it out. In the meantime, many plain yogurts are lactose free (check if lactase is an ingredient and if so, they're good), and lactose free milk is quite nice (I use it by choice because I like the taste), hard cheese should be fine. Are you ok with oats? Meats and fats…

Do you restrict all fodmap categories? Have you tried to gradually introduce specific categories to help identify which FODMAPS are the problem? You may find that some categories are ok for you and that will give you more choices.

Sook: noun 1. Australia and New Zealand. a timid, cowardly person, especially a young person; crybaby. Yep, that's me, a crybaby...not young anymore though  We don't have crisco here. It's annoying because I see it in a lot of recipes. The closest would be copha, which is made from 100% coconut oil without the…

Lol, I had to google lard and now I know it's pig fat. I'm a sook and I can't eat piggies...although I'll happily cook bacon for DH...(yep, I know I'm a hypocrite :p )

I absolutely agree with this provided that the term processed is applied with common sense eg. frozen veges may be considered processed but can be better than fresh from a micronutrient perspective. Saturated fats I'm not yet convinced that saturated fat is fine to eat all you want. I don't believe that there's enough…

I just saw the med diet pyramid in another thread and I agree that my diet naturally tends to fit quite well. Fortunately that's the way I like to eat and I do love my food! Do you cook rosestring? I cook quite a bit but usually nothing that takes up a lot of time. On a Sunday, I might make a chicken and veg lasagne that…

Nice! I would say that I pretty much eat to the standard Med style pyramid because it appeals to my taste buds.

I can only speak for weight control because I've never been overweight. I have been over what I like to be and have altered my eating to lose a few kilos from time to time (I'm doing this at present with the aim to lose 4 kilos, 3 to go). My diet mainly consists of fruit (2-3 serves a day), veges, which I have in salads,…

For me, eating is one of the great pleasures of life. I love food and when i have the time, I love to cook. I also enjoy going out for a meal, with Thai being my favourite. I don't think that I ever consciously think about food as fuel, although I have increased my protein intake since I've been weightlifting.
