You must have had poor experiences with nutritionists. Important aspects of the training (in dietetics) are evidence based recommendations and individualised plans for clients based on information gathering...not lazy one size fits all advice.

So, the knowledge from your weight loss experience equals the expertise of a qualified dietitian who has completed, at minimum, 4 years of university study plus clinical training in all areas of nutrition and dietetics? Not only that, do you have knowledge of the anthropometric, clinical, personal details and social…

That's great OP. She would have personalised a plan for you based on your individual needs, which only you and she understand, and will no doubt tweak if needed at follow up.

Ugh, the term grates.....and why were phytochemicals excluded from the classification scheme?
-
Yes, we do have it in Australia. I buy it from the local markets but I haven't had any in a while. I've actually got some seeds that I saved and dried, but I need to wait until spring to plant them. I could post you some seeds if you're keen to try to grow them. Just pm me. :)

The simple vs complex carb classification is based on chemistry and it's simplistic to classify them as good vs bad. Simple carbs can be in nutrient dense foods eg. fruit and they are often consumed with other foods which alters their absorption and insulin response, making them not 'bad', but instead, just a carb.

Oh crap! I probably should have thought of the spoiler thing. Sorry. B) It finished here ages ago but I never got to watch it on cable. My sister gave me the complete series at Christmas and I have been obsessed by it. In fact some nights, I was even dreaming about it! I actually took a little break during the final season…

BREAKING BAD SPOILER ALERT! I cried when Walt died on BB. Actually I balled my eyes out. Then I ate some chocolate... I doubt that crying is diet related unless there are other emotional issues surrounding your weight loss.

It's your overall diet that's important. Generally speaking, for weight loss, moderation of high calorie nutrient poor carbs can be a good thing, but in reality, people have lost weight and improved health markers that weight loss influences by eating only twinkies. It's very much an individual thing, and finding what…

In that situation, where there's already family strife about refusal, I would probably eat the Chinese food, but a smaller portion that wouldn't blow my calories for the day. You're fortunate that they're offering you a choice, because there are reasonable choices for Chinese food. In social situations where I don't have…

Lipids and protein also increases oxidative load. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11916766 Congrats OP. Very inspiring story!

Before you start drinking, prepare something to eat later so you won't be so tempted by your friends' food.

The first link is really just nonsense from an integrative medicine centre. There is no study, just opinions. Methanol is produced from the metabolism of many foods, not just aspartame. In fact, the same amount of tomato juice produces 5x the amount. The body is able to metabolise methanol, formaldehyde, and formic acid…

I didn't see the mockery, but you may have read something into a reply that I missed. Regarding the questioning about giving up sodas or sweets, with so much misinformation on nutrition everywhere we look, wouldn't it be better that people are aware that they do not need to 'give up' certain foods that they enjoy to have…

Like Ana, I tend to tailor recipes to reduce calories by adding veges, Shirataki noodles or rice, and using leaner cuts of meat; replacing some of the sugar with stevia, replacing coconut cream with evaporated milk and coconut essence, using diet jellies to sweeten and set cheesecakes, using lower fat dairy, yogurt to…

I wasn't aware of the FB page or the blog. What a great resource! I will definitely be trying some of the recipes. Thanks for the links Leena and Yarwell.

It reminds me of this Jimmy Kimmel clip about GMOs. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EzEr23XJwFY

Thank you for posting this. The HCA supplementation studies are really interesting, particularly when you consider the types of genes that are being regulated.

So what type of foods would fit into your 'healthiest of all foods' category.

I don't think either are superior, but I wonder if it would influence people's dietary choices if there was more information/research about bioavailability and it made a reasonable difference by choosing one thing over the another. I find it interesting learning about all aspects of nutrition, and I appreciate that the OP…

Is it the healthy eating that you're concerned about, or your issue with allergies? Are you able to get some campus food that suits your allergies, even though they may be high calorie, or are your allergy needs not accommodated?

I think that it's important to see a Dr first to make sure there's no underlying problem. I suffer from headaches and migraine and I find that various triggers together throw me over the threshold. For example, if I'm tired, dehydrated and I drink alcohol, it's usually migraine city. Have you ever kept a migraine/headache…

Can you keep a personal supply of fruit and veg, perhaps lactose free yogurt? If you are overweight and need to lose weight, perhaps you could eat less quantities of the campus food and fill up on vege sticks, salsa dips, fruit, lactose free yogurt (if you have a fridge).

I use my airfryer...a chicken breast and some chopped veges, coated in sweet chilli or olive oil and all in together. Prep time is under 5 minutes. You can do the same thing in the oven.

I agree. Perhaps it was harder to accurately track on those days.

I love Laughing Cow and the similar one that Aldi make. I'm jealous that we don't do coupons in Australia. :#

DH has an inherited high cholesterol problem so we use a margarine enriched with plant sterols which has been shown to lower cholesterol. I usually use butter in cooking if I need to use a large quantity. The plant sterol marg is pretty pricey. The butter is better because it's 'natural' argument doesn't hold much weight…

Thank you. I find it fascinating. I also found this article/study really interesting as well. It would be interesting to know the difference in someone eating what is generally considered a balanced diet (eg. based on national guidelines) that includes cooked and uncooked foods such as raw and cooked fruit and veg compared…

Thanks Sara for your post. I really enjoyed reading it. I understand what you said about gaining more in my upper body and I think that's what's happened. Because I'm not overweight (although I like to weigh a little less) I track for a bit to keep a tiny deficit and then I lose interest and don't bother for a bit, so I…
