did 25:35 today (ok, on a treadmill). Determined to crack 25 mins soon. 47 year old male, one year's running experience.

Go for it! I started running in November last year (I hadn't run since school, 30+ years ago, and then only grudgingly) and did my first Half on 6th October. Know where you are coming from, as I had a lot of doubts after signing up but stick with your plan & you'll get there. I found it really helped psychologically to…

Rule of thumb I read somewhere is not to increase run distance by more than 10% per week - it's easy to get carried away though!. Agree totally about the shoes; also you need to replace them regularly, I kept mine too long (there was nothing visibly wrong with them) and ended up getting Achilles tendon twinges which went…

I sometimes do a "gym triathlon" (did one today) as 1k swim, 10k indoor cycle and 5k treadmill run. Feels good afterwards!

I do three gym sessions (core, leg and upper body) with cardio (usually 10k cycle, 5k treadmill) and two outdoor runs a week. Did first half on 6th October and came in at 2:13 which was OK but have loads of room to improve

I was out for a while with Achilles tendon problems; elliptical is OK but takes longer and no real substitute for running...

Got round in 2:13:07! Well pleased with that! All the best to everyone else doing their first Half

False - tomorrow TNP is feeling fine today

think that's quite common - essentially muscle weighs more than fat, so the very muscular can still be technically "obese" if you look at BMI. Visceral fat is the best fitness measure as this is "bad" fat, as I understand it.

Good luck to all doing Halfs - I have my first one on October 6th so know how you are all feeling! I've run the distance once but haven't used gels, etc., just kept hydrated. I know that isn't what's recommended but think this works for me - might stick to energy drinks.

I was exactly the same - started out on a treadmill and could do about 1:30 then had to walk. I joined a running club at my work, and the (patient) experienced runners there took me through a few run/walk sessions where I ran until I was exhausted then walked...then ran again...etc. This really worked for me and within 3…

Wow, I've lost 25 kg & thought I was doing well until I read this! well done!

When I started I could only run for 90 seconds then had to walk for 2 1/2 minutes, now I'm up to around 9:30 miles but have loads of room for improvement still...

I do both; tend to do intervals and speed work at the gym over 5K, then do outside runs a couple of times a week. I prefer the outdoors on balance, though.
