I love that book, which I read many years ago. Do you have the tiny paperback edition with the black cover? Trying to stay firmly in Class X. Another Fussell book I loved was "The Great War and Modern Memory."

My weight's gone up, as it usually does at this time of year. I'm not overweight either, but I always worry -- Will this be the year I can't get down again? I attended an annual event that always has huge amounts of great food and I ... indulged. I'm not going to drive myself crazy between now and the New Year, but I will…

Isn't that amazing, that a physician the OP consulted might actually know more than folks on the Internet? OP: Unless you have an immediate medical emergency, I would ask your doctor if you could start after the New Year. Then make a real effort because your long-term health is at stake.

Sugar is difficult for some people to eat in moderate amounts. From today's New York Times: In Food Cravings, Sugar Trumps Fat http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/12/13/in-food-cravings-sugar-trumps-fat/?hp&pagewanted=all&_r=0

It depends on what they eat. IF works for lots of people. Google "The Fast Diet," which was written by a journalist with a medical degree who interviewed researchers and tried various methods himself. He did a program on his experiences.

There is a psychological benefit for some people in going on a strict plan. Slow-and-steady all the time does not work for everyone. It's a "myth" of dieting.

That's not the medical definition of fasting. People are prescribed supplements. So do people who practice Intermittent Fasting. They are considered necessary. If you're on a three-day fast, it doesn't matter, but if you're on an extended fast, or are doing IF on a regular basis, you should take vitamins.

People get busy. I'm sure they don't mean to be unsupportive.

I'm in a holding pattern right now. It's the holidays, and I'm not going to torture myself. After the New Year, I intend to go on a Protein Sparing Modified Fast for a maximum of 10 days or less if I can't stand it. Feel free to check in with me then. Edited to add: I'm 5'2" and my weight is 104, but I've been bored and…

Nothing. I've visited both Planet Fitness and Blink Fitness, another no-frills chain, owned by Equinox. PF has much better hours, but its decor seems a little cheesy compared to Blink's. Both have good rates (I think PF is a little cheaper) and reasonable amounts of equipment.

I'm glad you found it helpful. This trainer is one of the few people who's ever acknowledged that traditional training will only make women shaped like us bigger. I know from experience that squats increased the size of my butt and hips and as they're already large relative to the rest of my body.

The fact is there is no permanent method for getting rid of ALL one's cellulite through diet and exercise.

I'm not overweight, but the women who are supposedly in the same range as I am look much thinner. Body fat distribution is the determining factor. This site only depresses me.

Not true. I've known people who in their 40s and 50s could eat whatever they wanted and stay rail-thin. Their genetics gave them a huge advantage over the ordinary person. One needed to eat extra desserts to keep up his weight. I've never been overweight, but my weight has crept up steadily over the years and I have…

The people who follow a 1200 calorie diet usually aren't telling other people to follow it. They are defending themselves against the continuous attacks that it's unhealthy. They know what works for them. Besides, 1200 calories is not a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD). If the food is nutritionally balanced, it's enough food…

If you find a form that works for you, stick to it, and keep an eye on the calories you consume (it can't be an eating free-for-all), yes, it works.

If you were exercising at high intensity 90 minutes a day 5 days a week you should have lost weight. You're probably not logging accurately. I'm 5'2", not that active, and I need to be under 1200 to lose weight.
-
Well, no, it actually isn't. "Exercise" has a generally understood meaning and things like standing, reading, etc. do not fit it.

It was fun. I also enjoyed "An Adventure in Space and Time," a drama/doc on how "Doctor Who" came into being.

Whatever works for you, so long as you're healthy and there are no long-term effects.

Don't be intimidated by the gym. Get a tour, hire a personal trainer for some sessions, during which s/he can show you how to use the equipment. Bring music you like, or pick a station near a TV with shows you enjoy. Use apps on you phone to keep track of your progress and make it fun. The overwhelming majority of, if not…

Very occasional, short-term diets work for me. I've never been overweight. I am healthy. I also believe in exercise that includes some resistance training, but I don't have a regular fitness plan. The key to weight loss is calorie reduction. If you eat right and do the right exercise, you don't lose lots of muscle during a…

Never done recreational drugs or become overweight.

Much of the information about weight loss takes the form of guidelines. But change too many fundamental definitions and you won't get the results you want. People have been engaging in structured physical activity for centuries. Certain activities burn significantly more calories. They're called exercise. I exercise and am…

:flowerforyou: At times I think some folks want to get caught up with truly meaningless minutiae instead of making time to do the exercise they need to do.

If you want to make excuses for yourself, count everything as exercise. But most people know what real exercise is. If you have a physically demanding job, that figures into your general activity level. I imagine most people here are sedentary, or at most, lightly active. This is not that complicated. Either your calorie…

It usually indicates the amount of intensity involved, which is related to the amount of calories burned. It's not perfect, but you are burning more calories when you are sweating or panting. I think that not counting as exercise activities that don't involve sweating is a good rule of thumb.

Good choice. I may order one in the future.
